Suggestions For Proper Media Player?

Sat Jul 04, 2009 2:26 pm

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to watch DVD on my computer and I used windows media player, but it made me furious. None of the functions were working properly, not the pause function, not the change language feature or subtitles off or anything at all. The full screen worked, but never back to the normal screen, I had to close it and it made my PC work at a very high CPU level... I don't want to use that anymore.

Does anybody have a good programm to watch DVD's? For free would be great  Wink

Thanks.

PowerDVD is great, but that is more of a short term solution (only lasts the duration of the free trial) as you'll have to pay in the future to keep using it.

I try to avoid these trial versions. I want a full version for free. I mean legal for free. Like the WMP comes for free. I don't need any high tech anything, just where I can watch my DVD's properly.

Same over here. Comparatively low CPU-usage (on older machines).

hook it up to your tv and use the proper software that also downloads all those covers etc automatically, even of those "backup copies"

I swear by VLC, I have to watch tons of MPEGs and AVIs for training at work, and rarely have a problem with VLC, and when i do it usually crashes the system if i try to watch the same file in WMP!

98% of the time I use WMP 11 but modified with a special codec pack that allows me to watch pretty much any file format in WMP. It's really stable with this pack. I highly recommend this:

http://download.cnet.com/Windows-Ess...dec-Pack/3000-2140_4-10662709.html

On the rare occasion I watch a movie in my computer I use PowerDVD. Has great picture and sound quality.

VLC is really good in that it will play pretty much any format out there. Pretty impressive. As good as it is I rarely use it though, I only use it to watch corrupted or partially downloaded video files.

And that is what is annoying, I want to download something, install it, use it - The End. WMP always gives me trouble. I never liked the program a lot and now it is playing tricks on me and doing stuff I do not want to.

The last time I tried to watch a DVD with WMP(The Aviator) The audio and video didnt align, drove me crazy, I ejected the disk and threw it. LOL.
Use WinAmp. It truly cant be beat. I swear I think it will play any codec ever designed.

I use WMP for general use. As soon if I find any file WMP has trouble with, VLC. VLC ALWAYS works  Smile

If it would be only that WMP cannot play some weird code or file. It cannot play regular DVD's or some normal files...

VLC it is for now (and WinAmp).

VLC is definitely what you want for a trouble free video and audio experience. Although I am having problems with the latest version when it comes to setting full screen mode on a secondary display...

Another definite must have is the freely available K-Lite codec pack, which comes with Media player classic (a 'primitive' version of WMP loaded with all the codecs you'll never need). Basic, works great, and you'll never ever find a format you can't play anymore...

It works fine for me. I am using 2 monitors as well and I put the VLC on full screen on the 2nd one and I can do whatever I want on the 1st one without affecting the 2nd one. It just plays and plays and plays and plays...

Where do I get that? I don't think I really need it as I don't have a format I cannot play - yet.  Smile

My question was PC related. When I really want to watch DVD, then I do it on my TV as well, with a proper DVD player and surround sound  Smile

For using my organised media library iTunes is hard to beat, but VLC is indeed a good counterpart for "drive by" watching/listening of files I don't intend to put into my library.

By the way: If you've got QuickTime on your machine, you can also drag individual audio files onto the QuickTime player and it will play them individually as well. QuickTime plays pure audio files just as well as video (iTunes also uses the QuickTime infrastructure for playback).

Google K-lite, there's plenty of download locations, such as this one:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

The codecs provided are really powerful and completely customizable if needed.

Well I haven't yet looked into it too much but the thing is that I use two different video controllers for the two screens, which might throw it off a bit.

That could be the reason. i am only using one and it handles it very well.
