Fish Or Meat: Which Would You Order In A Rest'rnt?

Tue Jul 07, 2009 7:42 pm

I eat little meat, but I'm a huge fish fan - and I'll stick to what I love.

In a fish restaurant, I would probably order meat. In a normal restaurant, the opposite.

No actually it’s meat for me. Some fish can be really good though! Other seafood, nono.

Same here, especially at a Japanese hibachi restaurant. There, I will have a combination of hibachi beef and shrimp or beef and scallops. That's my favorite kind of cuisine.  Smile

I'd probably go for fish, all things being equal. But I find that fish is generally harder to get right than meat.

It really, really depends on the restaurant. I am very picky on what I order, especially with fish. There are only a very, very select few fish restaurants that I'll order fish from. It is a trust issue that I have......hard to explain..... Two places with excellent seafood, you cannot go wrong with Red Lobster in Superior, CO and Walnut Brewery Restaurant in Boulder, CO. I'll do Ivar's in Seattle every once in a blue moon......

Stay away from Long John Silvers. GROSS!!!!!!!!

As far as meat goes, however..... I'm ok with pretty much any place to have a steak.

It depends on the restaurant. There are a lot of restaurant's here on Long Island that get the fish directly from the fishermen, and if I am at one of those restaurants I will get seafood.

Don't like fish either, unless it's in small amounts, raw, rolled up in rice and sea weed. Every now and then someone makes a decent Salmon and I'll have a small piece, but that's it.

Favorite seafood has got to be fried shrimp or calamari with plenty of lime.

Personally, I'm a meat guy, particularly beef (e.g. a nice, juicy Argentinian Churrasco), and perhaps lamb (when I'm in the mood for a Döner). I quit eating fish and only eat it if it's either salmon, or if it's a California Roll (sushi roll with the rice on the outside, not the inside).

I've moved to white meat 80% of the time, with some nice beef the rest of the time.

If it is from the sea it can stay there as far as I'm concerned.

Only fish I eat is cod on Good Friday. So it's meat for me, particularly roast lamb drowned in gravy, lamb chops or a dry fillet steak. Sauces with steak destroys the flavour.

I am a huge fish fan but I love steak as well. Ever sense going to Brasil my first time, I went from being a pretty much veggitarian to loving red meat.

If I am a resturant known for its great red meat, I will get that. If its a place where has good sea food and good turf, I normally go for the sea food. I can't pass up a good Ahi Tuna, Salmon, or Scallups.

More than anything though...I am a HUGE sushi fan!

Speaking of seafood, I just had some tonight. Some cooked and some raw.

We have a Japanese restaurant near our apartment and had takeout sushi tonight. I had a yellowtail roll (raw), a dynamite roll (cooked - a tempura California roll), and I shared a tuna-and-mango roll. Tasty as ever!  Smile

My only gripe about ordering seafood at a restaurant is the price & portions.
I usually am underwhelmed with the size of salmon fillets for the price I pay.
I prefer to buy salmon at the grocery store as I can get a large 3-4 pound fillet for about $10 - $15.

I guess that's what a Brazilian Churrasco (Brazilian Barbecue) does to you. The only time I've eaten Brazilian was in a Rodizio near my old home in Hamburg (across from Station Schlump). The restaurant is still there.

Personally, I prefer the Argentinian Churrasco (the actual steak) because of the flavour. It's a very thick cut and the fat that it contains, gives it a slightly salty but great taste.

That's exactly it. I remember my first trip to Brasil and going to a Churrasco the same night I arrived in GRU and wanting to go there every night after haha. Now its tradition to eat Churrasco the night we arrive, one time during the week or two (however long I'm there) and the night before we leave. When I spent 3 months down there last, I had Churrasco at least once a week. Fantastic!

The steak.

I have been in a fish processing plant, I know what a light table is and how it is used when processing cod.

For those of you who aren't in the know, the filets are cut but machine and skinned. The filets are then candled on the light table. The table is usually manned by some elderly phillipino or Korean women with tweezers, what they do is light the filet from the back on the light table. Any red spot they see they remove with those tweezers. Those red spots are worms.

When I was a kid, I used to eat those Fischstäbchen (fish sticks or fish fingers) that were sold by Igloo (for all German speakers, it's from those adverts featuring the pirate like captain, aka Käptn Igloo  Wink ). They were salmon filets cut in the shape of almost a finger, made out of salmon. I couldn't get enough of them, especially if you drizzle some lemon juice of them. When I'm in Germany, I may get another pack of those and make them with some chips.

I like both, but in an unfamiliar place I am more likely to go with meat since I don't particularly like fish with bones. Also, my fish has to be cooked. I really don't like the idea of sushi.

Here we have a kind of fish that we usually cook with pressure cooker to make the bones soft so we can eat them along with the meat.

I don't like oysters, neither do I like clams. I never tried any of them, but I simply don't even want to try it.

As for shellfish, I eat shrimp, at most. I never tried crab, and I don't intend to try it neither, the same for lobster considering the fact that it was most likely alive when it was cooked.

This thread is making me crave steak and beer either from Buenos Aires or one of the fine steakhouses here in Houston!  yummy

However, I try not to each that much red meat and usually go for chicken or pork. Don't like fish, except for one that I grew up eating cooked in a Filipino style called "inihaw" where you grill a whole fish stuffed with tomatoes and onions. Now I've got a craving for roast chicken or spit-fired roast pork!!!!!  cloudnine

Usually meat, as I am not overly keen on seafood particularly if it is difficult to eat (e.g. lobster) or full of bones (e.g. red mullet).

Meat preferences are a good chateaubriand or beef wellington (if you are paying for me), lamb particularly the local lamb, and (when guilt does not overcome me) a gorgeous wiener schnitzel.

I feel hungry now and there's another four hours until lunch!  biting
