Bing Maps?

Sat Jul 11, 2009 11:54 am

Dumb question. Does Bing Maps know where I live or is it just a coincidence? What happens when you open the page and just zoom in without putting in a location?

I suppose they're tracking your IP and getting geographical area from that. In my case, Bing zooms into Atlanta, not the suburb where I live. They're off by about 20-25 miles.

Thanks, that is what I thought. Didn't think that the world revolved around Franklin, Michigan!

Kreuzberg, Berlin, about 4 km from where I live. Not bad.

Mine gets to within 600 or 700 yards of my present location.

I just hope they don't do what Google did, driving around everywhere and taking pictures of everybody's houses.

If they do, I hope the Europeans fight it like they did Google.

Mine gets exactly to my city. Something like 8-10 km far away my house.

On a related note, has anyone checked out the "Birds-eye" view?

It appears to be MUCH more updated than googlemaps does for the aerial view.

It isnt here. The Birds Eye is atleast 5 years out of date. Our city's new library that opened in '04 is still under construction, At our house we still have our old cars, a dodge dealership that moved around '05 is still in its current location. And a restaurant that was demolished to make way for an autozone is still standing

Sadly it appears that I am nearly in the middle of the Niagara river (Canadian side), that result is about 5-6 miles from my house. Of course you would have to add about 150 feet to the left on the river to get to the Canadian side

When I open the page and just zoom in without putting in a location, I get the fair Dutch town of Amersfoort. Only about 60 miles east of where I live  Big grin

Doesn't come anywhere close to where I am. Using the zoom button on the map to zoom in without a location puts me somewhere in the Pacific between Hawaii and Mexico. It's at least 1000 miles off from where I live in Hawaii.

I was zoomed into downtown Harrisburg PA; about 4-5 mlles from my house Not too bad I guess as Harrisburg is not a major metro.

I zoomed into somewhere in Victoria, Australia - about 4000km off my present location!

EDIT: Bing Maps is stupid as it doesn't have a revolving map. There's a cutoff line around about the International Date Line which means it can't center itself on New Zealand. I find that very unhelpful.

The nearest place on the map was Ascension roughly 7400 km from the pc I'm currently sitting at.

The map over Adelaide, Australia is around 5-6 years old, the new terminal at ADL hasn't even been built yet which started back in 04!

It's a really interesting view, but there's a minivan in my driveway. I haven't seen it in at least two years...

Interesting. I zoomed in and it brought me to the block of Adelaide St between Bay and Yonge Sts. in Toronto, about 350 km away, as the bird flies.

It zooms in about 10 km from my place....surprisingly accurate, given the technique.

It's not like this "problem" doesn't exist elsewhere, or is going away. Even without Google's Street View, it will become easier and easier to find photos of various business and even residential addresses on the web.

Last month, I had to be at a certain location in downtown Chicago. I wanted to see what it looked like, but the photo on Google Street View was off pretty low quality. So I searched for the place on Flickr, and voila....excellent, high-quality shots for me to enjoy. And Flickr isn't the only large photo site out there.

Thus, banning Google from producing Street View content is a complete waste of time. It pictures views available to the general public, so it's safe to assume that sometime in the next decade or two, most populated areas will have been photographed and made available to view online in some other way, shape, or form.

Yeah I was just looking at that. It's pretty old, that's too bad. I looked at DOV just to see and there are a couple C-141's on the ramp and the nice little museum they have there isn't there yet. I guess it's kinda cool to see what things looked like back a few years and compare it to now on the other web maps out there. My house in Michigan doesn't really show up either even though it's 35 years old. Oh well.

Bing maps is the old maps.live.com

If you have any cookies on your computer from using that map viewer - then Bing will read them and zoom in.

Yes, it does have a flat map with edges near the International Date Line.
