Any Anetters With Swine Flu Yet?

Wed Jul 15, 2009 9:49 pm

ugh!

I just got back from a 4 day cruise to mexico with my friend. And he started feeling bad and he was diagnosed for swine flu!!!! Now im freaked out that i will catch it, the doctor says there is a 99% chance of me getting it because i spent 4 days in the same enviroment as him, he is staying at my house and we have to share a room.

Any of you guys with the Swine ( H1N1) yet?

There's a difference between being "diagnosed" and actually CONFIRMED as having H1N1.

I remember reading something like 98% of were misdiagnosed cases that ended up being just your everyday flu.

It was suspected that I had it a month or so ago, but then it got worse and viral meningitus or severe flu were both diagnosed instead. So far as every doctor or nurse has told me, swine flu isn't actually as bad as normal flu.

No one that I know.

My daughter just finished up being a teacher's assistant/hall monitor at the Summer Institute for The Gifted down at Emory in ATL. One of the family members of one of the campers contratcted H1N1, and so they ahd everyone on at the camp on strict hand washing regimen. Apparently, nothing came of it, as she didn't report on anyone coming down with it in that 3-week period.

My apologies on not clarifying, he has not been confirmed, the doctor says it isnt worth sending into the CDC.

So yes it is a diagnoses and not a confirmed case.

I had it about two weeks ago, at first it was just a sore throat and cough but within a few hours I had a headache and fever. The next day I was feeling worse and had more symptoms so I rang the doctors and they asked me my symptoms and what my temperature was before telling me that it was, "probably H1N1" as there would be very little seasonal flu around at this time of year but to just stay at home, take paracetamol and drink plenty of water. I have Asthma and although I haven't suffered from it since I was a child, it was a concern so the following day when my breathing became difficult and the doctors kept telling me to stay at home I decided to go to my local hospital where I was confirmed with H1N1, given Tamiflu and sent home.

I was fully recovered within a week and if my breathing hadn't become difficult it would have been no worse than a normal flu or even bad cold.

Hence why 2 months ago every time you coughed you were immediately diagnosed with swine flu because Mr. Media Giant had a slow news day and blew it out of proportion.

But back on topic, I know of one person in LAS who has a confirmed case. Said it was no worse than the flu. If your healthy drink OJ and eat right you should be fine. Just try to build up your immune symptom and don't look to much into it or you could fall victim to hysteria sickness.

I had swine flu. I live in New York City. I was diagnosed by my pediatrician, a doctor who actually writes and contributes to pages for the CDC website, so I'm pretty sure he knew exactly what he was talking about. I tested positive for the Influenza A virus; H1N1 is an Influenza A. The A strain includes the common flu, but also includes the swine variation. He said the swine flu was so common that there was a 99.9% chance it was in fact the swine variation. It actually doesn't seem to be as bad as the regular flu, though I did miss my high school prom because of it  crying

Anyway, the media really is overdoing it. Unless you're extremely sick, very young or elderly, et cetera, then you'll just be in bed for a week or so.

I was on the train today and a Woman was on her mobile phone. She was asking what was wrong with her friend and she had Swine Flu. Thats the closest I have come to it so far.

I guess we will all get it before long. HSBC are giving free Tamiflu courses to their staff and a reduced rate of £25 to their families. I wonder how many other companies will follow.

Where do you guys go. I was in Mexico City, using the metro, in the centro for days when this thing was at its peak. My parents asked me to come home and all sorts of drama.. :S

But yeah, until it is confirmed there is a chance he just has a little post vacation blues.. (I mean flu.. Big grin)

I live in the swine flu capital of the world, Melbourne, the highest confirmed cases per capita. But i worked out the odds last night with the number of confirmed cases in Australia there is still only a 1 in 2100 chance of getting it.
I feel like ive got it right now, but its more a case of just a mild flu, not enough sleep and a hangover

Due to my symptons and working environment I was prescribed Tamiflu on Weds and advised not to leave the house for a week. Feel rough, sore throat, bad head, chesty cough and ache all over. My daughter picked up the Tamilflu and posted it through the letter box on the advice of the doctor.

And here I am to prove it!

It was no worse than any other flu I've had to be honest. I did start on the Tamiflu within a few hours of the symptoms starting tho which probably helped alleviate the worst.

At least I should be immune from it if it does develop into a more severe strain..

Wash your hands a lot. It's not certain you'll get it, especially if it's been 4 days.

H1N1 seems to be very similar to a lot of other kinds of flu. What's unusual about it is that it's out of season. Most flu outbreaks tend to happen in the winter, while this one happened in the spring and summer, but otherswise, this not especially outstanding.

What gives?

I'm not too worried about they way it is at the moment, I'm just worried about the potential of it. It's spreading easily and fast between people right now and if it becomes much more severe with the same level of transferability it seems that it could be horrendous.

Just wondering, why is this? If it's a virus why can't all flu's spread from person to person just as easily in warmer weather? Same seems to apply to the common cold with more cases in the winter. But I'm confused as it's caused by a virus and not a result of being cold.

I haven't had the Flu in over 5 years, however there are rumours that there may be someone at work who may be infected. Also, my driving teacher fell sick on Saturday. My father asked himself whether he could have the swine flu, especially since he is still sick today (claiming that four doctors have seen him on this).

I have a theory about that...and I'm no doctor, but I've not had a cold or the flu in years...once the weather starts to get cooler, people tend to close their windows and turn on heaters to stay warm. If I feel chilled, my windows stay open...but I either add a layer of clothing or wrap myself in a blanket...and yes, I know I live in Bermuda but I've done this in the UK and in the USA when temps dipped to -10F at night. I think the issue is lack of fresh air and people sharing breath/germs....

I'm from Melbourne too and the only person I know of having it is a guy in my German class - I do it by distance education as my school doesn't offer it as a subject so it's not a like I see him every day...I saw him about a week before he was diagnosed...

That would be your 'flu friend' then. I started working for the Pandemic helpline yesterday. We were given 5 hours training, then we go live today. Luckily, I've been given today as my day off already, which I'm quite pleased about as the others can deal with the teething problems of the system and phones etc. We are basically just going through what you can do online to get your result to determine if you have swine flu or not.

Because during the winter, people are inside more and thus, in closer proximity. Also, there is lower humidity in the winter, which helps the virus particles survive.

My sentiments too.

Although I felt pretty crap for 2 or 3 days it was no way as bad as the Hong Kong flu I suffered with 30 or so years ago. I did read that the symptoms of swine flu will probably increase in severity once it takes hold in winter, I'm quite thankful that I got it out of the way in summer.

Didn't they mean, increase in amount of people in terms of severity?  Smile
