"Funny People". Not Very Funny

Thu Jul 16, 2009 3:05 am

Saw it in a sneak preview with free tickets last night. Got to go with my son and 6 of his friends. Of course, I sat by myself so as not to make them feel bad.

To start, Adam Sandler, I think, is very talented. He has the talent to to almost any kind of movie-he could be this generation's Tom Hanks if he wants to be.

But for me, this movie wasn't all that funny. Everyone has their own tastes. But there's far too much sexual innuendo, and far too much cussing for me to really enjoy it. It has some very good moments, and it certainly had potential to be a very good movie. Fell short for me.

Sandler can do better than this, I think.

If you don't mind swearing every other word, and over-the-top sexual innuendo, this movie is for you. Personally, I'd like to see Adam get beyond this and grow up some.

When you see it, feel free to add your two cents.

Adam Sandler's recent films have sucked. Sure, we can't always expect good films, and while Sandler did have quite a few good films, those that have come out recent either recycle elements used from other films, or they simply suck and are not funny.

Ill be blunt.

Adam Sandler, Jack Black, Rob Shinder

Stupid actors should not be allowed near the set of any movie.

I think Sandler has some talent. Add Will Ferrell to the others.

His last movie, Click, was pretty good IMHO. Also Waterboy, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy were decent.

Wasn't his last movie 'The Zohan' thing?

I'm not a big fan of Sandler at all. But The Zohan got a few chuckle out of me, mostly because of the cliches. Comedies very rarely make fun of Jews/Arabs that candidly, it was a nice change, if a bit biased.

Falcon, I guess for posterity (I don't know your taste in comedies) how does it compare to Judd Apatow's other directing stints (40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up)?

I thought the thread title was referring to Dane Cook.
He might be the very worst--Ferrell and Schneider look like comedic geniuses compared to him.
Jack Black started out funny, but he's now in the same category as Dane Cook: people who say really random sh*t, make funny hand movements, and expect people to laugh at them.

Adam Sandler is actually quite funny however, I do not like the fact that it seems that in everyone of his movies the first half is outrageously funny and the second half is extremely serious, romantic, and / or downright depressing. What's up with that?

Although my mother begged me to watch "50 First Dates", I happened to enjoy it only for the fact that most of it was set in Hawai'i.

I got a bad feeling on this movie when the first trailers focused on how Adam Sandler was dieing and it appeared that the movie was about this whole new lease on life angle. But then the later trailers dont even mention that angle.. not a good sign

Jack Black

Jack Black is hit or miss for me. I enjoyed School of Rock, and I thought he played a good supporting role in The Holiday (? not sure on this title, was on TV). But a lot of his other stuff does not interest me. The Year One that just came out... no desire to see.

Sandler and Black seem quite confortable playing leading characters because they're way more talented than the other two.

It puzzles me also, although his comedy-drama dicotomy seems to be sort of his trademark now.

Don't waste your time or your money. It tried too hard to be funny, and the few lines that were actually funny they used again and again and again and again....

Never understood the hype behind Adam Sandler.
He is not funny and he seems like he tries too hard to be funny.
Then again, millions of people find him funny and that's all that matters to him.

I find him to be one of the most annoying people out there. To me Will Ferrel and Steve Martin specialize in what I call "a**hole" humor. They make their living my making movies which make them look like "a**holes".

I think Adam Sandler is sometimes funny. Personally, I think he would do better if he chose his scripts more carefully.
