We've Landed On The Moon! (7/20/1969)

Mon Jul 20, 2009 12:25 pm

Wasn't born yet, but special to me since grandfather worked on Apollo program as an engineer.
Where you alive when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon? How long till man sets foot on moon again?

Haven't quite landed yet - go to www.wechoosethemoon.org for a virtual recreation of the Apollo 11 mission running 40 years to the second after the real thing. It even plays the audio recording of the transmissions between the capsule and Mission Control.

7 hours 44 minutes left until landing and counting...

Nope - not for another 30 or so years.

George W. Bush wanted NASA to put another man on the moon by 2020, but NASA has been plagued with problems recently... I'm no expert, but I'd guess around 10 years down the line, at least. The amount of preparation work and money they need will take lots of time to gather.

I saw the Moon Landing/First Steps livecast on a Black and White TV.
After 40 years I can still remember it quite clearly.
Long before the International Space Station, I was already hooked.

1969 What a great year it was!
The first Concorde flights... Woodstock... The Isle of Wight...
The First Man on the Moon...

They did all that without hardly any computers...
or at least the computers of the time were very backwards comparing with what we have now

The True Spirit of Conquest has disappeared... All now is about greed and power.

For the times... they are changin'...  Sad

We are the exact same age and I remember it like it was yesterday. The television images were pretty grainy, but I didn't care.

I was completely enamored with the space program from the time I was three years old. I would draw pictures of the Gemini rockets, cut them out, and get up early in the morning to watch them launch. When the rockets shed a stage or a booster, I would use a pair of scissors to cut the stage off my simulated, paper model.

Those were days of wonder!

Thats not true at all. We're sending out more probes, learning more about every conceivable thing on and off the planet, and making more advances every year than anyone could have dreamed of in 1969.

Does anyone think that it was all staged. There are some crackpots out there who say it was on a sound stage and what not

To those who might be interested, in honor of the 40th anniversary, TCM is running a bunch of 50s and 60s movies about travelling to the moon (and meeting the inevitable inhabitants). Some cheezy stuff, but kinda cool.

One thing to note - Movies always tend to exagurate available technology. Look at some of these movies, and realize that the technology they had for Mercury and Gemini was even worse!

I remember that day clearly. It was quite exciting. I lived in the San Fernando valley and it seemed as if the father's of half of the kids in school were somehow involved in the project.

What strikes me about that time is that everyone thought that a mission to Mars was just a few decades away. If you asked someone about a mission to Mars in 1969 most people would have said that we would certainly have made it there by 2009. No it seems doubtful if we will even get there in the next 40 years. Granted we were naive and optimistic at that time.

Yes, I was alive - was 14 years old and remember quite clearly watching the whole thing on a black & white TV. Not that it mattered, the feed was black & white (and quite fuzzy) so even a color TV would have shown it in B&W. Absolutely the greatest moment on TV ever - nothing else could come close. One of the great moments in human history, maybe the greatest.
But that's a topic for a new thread.....

Great anecdote related to that... this one moon landing denier, Bart Sibrel, had the stupidity to go up to Buzz Aldrin at a public event and accuse him of being a coward and a liar. Keep in mind that Aldrin is in his 70s and Sibrel's in his 30s.

Aldrin punched him in the face.

I've previously described in another thread where I was and what I was doing on July 20, 1969.

But I thought I'd ask my wife what she was doing. It was in the middle of the Cultural Revolution in China. She was a 12-year-old kid from Shanghai visiting her cousins in Beijing.
They announced on the Chinese radio that "human beings" had landed on the moon.
Later, when people quietly discussed it amongst themselves, they agreed that it must have been the Americans who did it.

I asked my wife if she was excited by the news? No. I asked her if she then realised at that time that "our system" was better than "their system"? Again no!

I guess that not all 12-year-olds were impressed!

The most amazing thing to me when I think about the moon missions is this-

Scientists estimate that around 100 billion humans have lived and died since the species began. Every single thing, every single event, every single bit of history up until 1969 occurred right here on this big chunk of rock with water on it. For probably every single member of this forum, everything that will happen to you in your life will occur on this planet.

Those 12 people who walked the moon were the first people to ever experience anything completely independent of the Earth. They are the only people to say that they did something, or had something happen to them, on the surface of another body. For them, except for their ability to communicate via radio to Houston, when they were on the Moon, they WERE the human race, and for all intents and purposes, it was as if we on Earth no longer existed, if you get what I'm trying to say.

It seems like I'm pointing out the obvious, but the more I think about it, the more it instills me with awe. I'll be proud when we return in the next decade, though the cynical part of me thinks at least some of the renewed interest in returning is because China is flapping it's jaw talking about how they're planning to put someone up there.

Sad part is, moon rocks look just like earth rocks. I've seen plenty on museums all over the country. To be honest I was quite disappointed when I first saw one.

Hmmm, maybe the conspiracy theorists aren't wrong after all...  Wow!  duck

Why shouldn't China or Russia or any other country be the next to go to the Moon? If they put the work and the money into it I don't see why they shouldn't be there.

My idea would be that organizations such as NASA and ESA/Arianespace get together with the Japanese Space Agency and why not the Chinese to have a multi-nations project for the next Lunar (and Mars) human missions and foot the bill together. It would make sense considering the economic downturn.

To be honest, I think the Russians will have their hands full with keeping the ISS supplied for the coming years.

However, they have just concluded an interesting social experiment (if you will), with a crew of volunteers simulating 105 days of isolation as if they were on a spaceflight ( http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/31/science/space/31mars.html?_r=2 ), and they are lining up an even more interesting experiment, which will really test the human mind: 520 days of total isolation, complete with 20-minute delays on communications with the outside, which will simulate a roundtrip to Mars. The physiological part of the journey has already been tested (to an extent), with a Russian kosmonaut having spent 438 days in weightlesness, but it will be interesting to see that will happen mentally when you're isolated for that long

You know a NASA lunar satellite just took pictures of the lander and debris remaining on the Moon, right?

I'm more open to believing conspiracies that most on this site, but there way more believable conspiracies out there than we didn't land on the moon. How do you suggest we kept 400,000 people quiet? How do you suggest we pulled a fast one on the Soviet Union, who would've scored a major propaganda victory and made us look like idiots to the world if they had proved it was fake?
