International SIM Cards

Tue Jul 21, 2009 8:16 pm

I'm planning a trip to Novosibirsk in Siberia next month and need some information on calling the US from Russia. I've bought a Nokia unlocked phone but am overwhelmed by the variety of SIM cards and different airtime charges.

Is it better to purchase the SIM card when I get there or go ahead and get one in advance. If I buy now any suggestions on which one to buy? Thanks.

This is from SkyMall. Read about it yesterday on my WN flight.

IDK, it sounded like a good deal. LOL.

Are you looking at the different Russian carriers? Whom do you plan to call? Mainly US numbers or Russian or other?

It would be mainly US numbers while in Russia. I'm sure I'd call some locally, but mainly I'd be using it to keep in touch with friends/family in the states over the 2 weeks I'm there. I did look at MTS, but I haven't been there before so I thought I'd poll a little before I purchased a card.

I looked into that skymall phone a little more. Outgoing phone call rates Russia to the US were $7.95/min. I've heard rates as low as .50/min if you get a sim card and an unlocked cell.

Not sure what the process of getting a SIM card is in Russia or their rates, but I've gotten SIM cards in Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, Italy, and Ireland on an unlocked mobile phone I keep handy. Italy was rather strict, but the lady helping me was very nice and helped explain it in English. The other countries were really easy. In those cases, I get the prepaid plans and just put money when I need to.

Using a US SIM seems like a waste of money. If you're on TMobile or AT&T, they do have an international plan that you could use. TMobile was nice to use in Germany since I wasn't charged international roaming on my old plan.

Have you looked at TripAdvisors.com and posted on the Russia site? Locals may be able to help you there.

That's why I was looking into a European or Russian sim card. I agree having an unlocked mobile handy seems like a good idea since I travel internationally quite frequently. I'll see what I can find on tripadvisors.com as well. I get the feeling I could pick up one relatively easy when I get there but I'm not sure about rates.
