What Did They Do To Dr. Pepper?

Wed Jul 29, 2009 6:52 am

I noticed about a year ago or so they reformulated the Dr. Pepper soft drink. The new formula is the one with the "23" on the label. Does anyone know why they did this?

To me, "23" leaves a strange aftertaste in your mouth and now it tastes like medicine going down your throat. The previous version was great.

Did anyone else find this disheartening too? I just can't drink the new stuff.

Every Dr. Pepper I've had recently tasted normal... I think the 23 was some promotion last year, like how many ingredients make up Dr. Pepper or something.

It's always been 23 flavors. It's just they revised their branding and marketing to put this fact on the forefront.

I've been drinking Diet Dr Pepper since a taste test before the product was actually released - which was close to 20 years ago.

Last summer with six grandchildren under age 12 in the van, I taught them some new words. After stopping and getting a soda for everyone, I grabbed a Diet Chocolate Cherry Dr Pepper by mistake.

When I took a taste - "What the FXXX SXXX is this CXXX?"

And they all laughed. And they all told their parents what PawPaw said.

Even to this day all we have in the stores is the Dr. Pepper "23" brand. It does taste different than the version without the 23 on it.

Maybe they upped the amount of HFCS in the blend?

We can still get the original Dr. Pepper from Waco here. It doesn't use HFCS, but is sweetened with cane sugar instead. It tastes like the original.

Does anyone remember the adverts where it was shown that you can heat up Dr. Pepper and drink it in the winter? Those were a LONG time ago!

Diet Chocolate Cherry Dr Pepper

That was some spectacularly nasty stuff. Truly awful tasting.

Had not really noticed a change in my normal DDP (diet DP), but I do know my last few DPs (non-diet) left me with a distinct "not doin' it for me" feeling.

Speaking as someone who lost his last grandparent a couple of months ago, I will say that while your kids and sons/daughters in law probably initially freaked out, you've just created a great random story that will continue to be retold long after you pass away. And you have Diet Chocolate Cherry Dr Pepper to thank for it.

I generally like cherry flavored/hinted sodas. Like cherry pepsi, like cherry coke. I like regular pepsi/coke also. Seeing as how I like regular dr pepper, I figured I'd like cherry dr pepper as well.
That stuff makes cough medicine taste good by comparison.
Nothing better, though, than a cold dublin dr pepper in a glass bottle.

I am not so sure that I wanted to know that there were 23 ingredients in a can of Dr. Pepper.

What is up with Mr. Pibb, a college drop out or something. Big grin

Mr. Pibb is a Coke product and about the only time I see it is as you mentioned when a "chain" signs an agreement to only serve their brand of products.

Taco Bell was owned by Pepsico and you only see Pepsi's products at their locations.

Dr. Pepper is a regionally very popular product in the south (Dallas based), OK and TX areas you see equal retail self space devoted to Dr. Pepper as Coke or Pepsi. If you go north or either left or right coast you find it located on the slow moving shelf area.

There is such a demand for Dr. Pepper in this area Coke and Pepsi make exceptions and allow the Dr. Pepper to be served in area "chains"

I last drank Dr. Pepper in 1956 in Texas while in the service, we drank it only as a last resort, when the other brands were sold out. I have never had the urge to taste it since. I cannot even imagine the diet version. In New England, we had Moxie, horrible, just like medicine to me.

Some things never change. Ironically, I feel that most people I know drink Moxie precisely for that reason.

My best friend swears by the stuff. He even named his dog Moxie. I tried it in college and I hated it.

In my neigborhood north of DFW, you can buy the 8 oz Dublin Dr. Pepper's at Tom Thumb and Wal-Mart. No need to drive far. I agree though, it's the best.

Is that bottle or can? I sure like the taste of it coming out of that 12oz can. Much better than plastic. By far.

Lets see... I've found Dublin Dr. Pepper at the following:
Buc-ee's in Luling
Weikels in La Grange
Cabo-Bob's resturant in Austin (soda fountain +1)
Possibly at Hruska's in Ellinger.

Just yesterday I saw Dublin Dr. Pepper at Sam's. 24 8ox bottles for $20.19. A little pricey if you ask me. I have seen Dr. Pepper in Waco in glass bottles, IMHO the best way to package any soft drink.

Dr Pepper is my drink of choice, if its not available, I'll take a regular coke or pepsi rather than disgrace my taste buds with the crap known as Mr Pibb  Smile
