Kick-Off Time Of Your Favourite Sports League?

Sat Aug 08, 2009 11:02 pm

Hi all!

I am curious of the kick-of times of your favourites sports-league. My favourite is the Bundeliga, we have the following times in this season:

1 game on Friday night at 8:30pm
5 games on Saturday at 3:30pm
1 game on Saturday at 6:30pm
1 game on Sunday at 3:30pm
1 game on Sunday at 7:30pm

Ok, somethimes there are exceptions, e.g. Friday night game cancelled = one more Saturday game, or: Saturday night game cancelled = one game more on Saturday afternoon or Sunday respectively.

Anyway:

I know that many American sport teams also play within the week, so what is a typical football/baseball/basketball/etc. matchday looking like? (I know the famous "Monday Night Football" game) When does the Argentinian soccer league or the Indian Rugby League play usually?

Feel free to add any league (sport) you are interested here.

In the NFL, most Sunday games kick off at 1pm local time. The late afternoon games usually kick off at 4pm local. Sunday night game is at 8pm Eastern for TV reasons, same as Monday night.

NBA games have varied times depending on the TV schedules. Major League Baseball is the same, most teams home games start between 7pm and 7:30pm. One exception being the Chicago Cubs who play several day games at home which usually start at 1:20pm.

I don't like the new kickoff times in the Bundesliga, but it's all about the money for the DFL. They call it "fan friendly", but from the reactions of actual fans on the FC St. Pauli forum (not the Ultras, who are starting to become somewhat annoying with their bitching and "Scheiß DSF" crap), it's not accepted at all.

As for other leagues, College Football and the NFL are coming up, but I'm looking forward to College Football more than I look forward to the NFL. In College Football, kickoff times are similar to those in the NFL, but matches are mostly on Saturday. There's also a Saturday Night Football match, which is sometimes played in a neutral venue (probably just for ESPN/ABC to make more money on the game).

On weekdays yes. On Saturdays, most games are still in the evening, but there are a usually between 1 and 3 played in the afternoon that are broadcast on FOX. Which game you see is based on geography. Sundays usually see all teams play in the afternoon except for one game in the evening that is broadcast nationally on ESPN. This game is ALWAYS Yankees vs. Red Sox if they are playing. (Thanks East coast SPorts Network  Yeah sure)

On Thursdays, many teams play in the afternoon because that is often "getaway day" for a weekend series. Likewise, Monday and Thursday seem to be the most often scheduled off days for MLB teams.

In the NFL, most Sunday games kick off at 1pm local time.

Most of the Eastern and Central time zone games do, with the Mountain and Pacific games kicking off at 4 Eastern. NFC games are shown on FOX and AFC on CBS. Inter-conference games are shown by the road team's network. Which game is shown in a given market is based on whether a local team is playing. There is one game on Sunday night shown on NBC nationally. These games are set early in the season, but are 'flex' for the later portion so the entire country can see the most important game. There is also Monday Night Football on ESPN and sometimes a Thursday night game as well.

High school football games are played almost always on Friday nights for small schools and either Friday night or Saturday afternoon for larger ones. Playoff games are either Friday night or Saturday afternoon for all schools.

High school basketball games are usually played on Tuesday night and Friday night, with the occasional Saturday evening games. The girls usually play on Monday and Thursday. Tournaments can be held throughout the week. Regular season games are almost never played on Wednesday night due to the (somewhat archaic) tradition of Wednesday being "church night."

Additionally, each Thanksgiving, the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys both play home games which are shown nationally.

PGA golf tournaments are played in the usual Thursday-Sunday format, with usually only the two final rounds being shown on network TV. Major tounaments often have all four rounds shown, and a final round delayed until Monday is sometimesbroadcast as well.

How I understand it is this way....with American football:

Wednesday nights: Jr. High JV football
Thursday nights: Jr. High Varsity football
Friday nights: High School Varsity Football
Saturdays: College football
Sundays: NFL Football
Monday nights: High School JV football & 1 NFL Monday Night football game.

Note: Times vary....
