Nancy Pelosi: Should She Stay Or Go?

Wed Aug 12, 2009 8:25 am

Seems like everytime you turn around Pelosi has her hand in the cookie jar and is firing off some ludacris statement to try and cover up another mess. She is hurting her team's chances of retaining seats in Congress. She's doing her best to lay the foundation for another election a la 1994. Trent Lott anyone? I think she is affecting Obama's polls negatively.

First of all, the word is spelled "ludicrous." "Ludacris" is the rapper. And while Pelosi certainly has room to improve, I think the main reason for the negativity directed at her is her visibility. Because the House is so big, it's hard to cast the entire group as the enemy--singling out Pelosi as the target of one's anger makes it much easier. At the end of the day, her job is to deliver 218 votes for the legislation Obama supports, and as long as she does that I don't have much objection to her.

Harry Reid, on the other hand, needs to either grow a spine or step down as Majority Leader.

This will be a decision of the voters in their district. Congressmembers rarely lose re-elections unless they get caught doing something really wrong. She is in a very liberal and therefore 'safe' district. Perhaps the Demos in Congress needs to choose someone from a more moderate district to be their leader, someone more careful in their choice of words so thay can't be taken out of context by opponents, who isn't rich, who will encourage going after the criminal acts of the GWB Administration, and related issues.

I personally think she should go. I doubt that the voters of California (the ones whose opinions actually matter on this issue), however, agree with me.

Then again, I also think that the vast majority of Congressmen should be replaced, and while most of America seems to agree with that sentiment (seeing as how low the Congress' approval rating is), the reality is that most are satisfied with the job that their personal representative is doing, which means that we are effectively stuck with this group for the foreseeable future.

And she knows it. And she doesn't care what you think.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20090727/pl_politico/25445

"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is one of the most despised political figures in the country.
And, frankly, she doesn’t give a damn.
“No, I don’t care,” Pelosi told POLITICO last Thursday, laughing heartily as she walked beneath the Capitol dome and plunged into a crowd of tourists.
Mention of the “trust” question halted the click-clack of Pelosi’s heels against Rotunda marble, and she turned to face the reporter who posed the question.
“I don’t know about ‘trust’ — I think I’m trusted,” she said.
“I certainly want to be trusted. I’m not particularly concerned if I’m liked.” "

Quoting LTBEWR (Reply 2):

Every poll taken has shown that to be a non starter and most politicians know that. This is the democratic party that ran on ending funding for the Iraq and then turned around and funded it so good luck with that.

As long as she watches her back and keeps her cronies happy, she stays.

Is this question any different from asking whether any other congressman from a district not your own should stay or go? Should Boener stay or go? Should Barney Frank stay or go? If the metric were "do I personally like him or her" then that would be one thing. You would actually be able to give an answer to that question. But it's not - the only ones that can determine if Pelosi stays or goes are the people of San Francisco.

Besides: we all know that she's only hated out of jealousy.  stirthepot

It seems as if the linked article suggests that Pelosi should "step down", in context of her role as Speaker of the House. In that case it would be the party members who would decide her fate.

Well that would be pointless. These people that hate her don't hate *her* per se, they hate the person that is the Democrat Speaker of the House, and the Democrat Majority Leader. Whoever that person is or becomes, those that are filled with hate will find him or her vile because of exactly one reason: he or she is a Democrat, and to them, Democrats, especially those with high power, are evil.

Ask one of them to detail exactly what it is about them they hate, and you'll just hear a bunch of labels. "Liberal." "Socialist." "Leftie." Most people do not have any substantive criticisms; they merely parrot those talking points issued by their leaders, Rush, Hannity, etc.

(And this comes from someone who does not like Pelosi one bit!)

This is entirely out of context to the linked article, penned by a self-described "Libertarian". Nowhere in the article is there a message of "hate" whatsoever, simply an argument regarding what the author perceived as an act of "hustling" on the part of Pelosi regarding the health care debate. The author ribs members of all parties, not Democrats specifically. She was even quite complementary towards the President in her opening paragraph, and says she continues to support him.

I didn't see anywhere in the article where the Obama-voting Libertarian randomly labeled Democrats, as you claim, as "Liberal", "Socialist", or "Leftie"? (We are discussing the premise of the article, are we not? I'll be back this evening to find out or not.)

As much as you would like to paint me as a radical rightwinger who hates all democrats, I'm sorry to disappoint you. I don't.

But Nancy Pelosi is an exception, along with Barney Frank. I hate them because of their outrageous lies, distortions, obfuscations and self-serving BS that they could never get away with if it weren't for their being based in districts that are 90% democrat - as long as they show up, they'll get reelected. This is why term limits is a good idea.

Yes, it reminds me of how Newt Gingrich represented everything evil about Congress during his reign. I also recall a lot of attention focused on Tip O'Neil but it wasn't as vociferous as the venom we see spewed at Pelosi.

I suppose it's a sign that Obama is so popular that they can't take shots at him, so they use Pelosi as a proxy.

I don't even need to read this thread. In fact, I have not. I can tell you EXACTLY what everyone will say. Anyone who is a staunch FOX news/Rush Limbaugh/Hannity/O'Reilly supporter will say "Yes, she needs to go because she is evil and the devil encarnate because she is a socialist and an elitist." Everyone else will have varying opinions from "I don't care for her policies" to "keep her forever and ever." Those people will be shouted down as elitists and socialists and the devil encarnate by FOX watchers.

Do I thinks she should stay? As an elitist, socialist, and devil encarnate, I don't care one way or the other. As a speech giver, I don't think her voice is all that effective. Listening to her on the radio, she sounds okay. But, just okay. The words of her (or anyone else from the Democratic party) will be twisted around to fit whatever the right wants to be said. They will define what "is" is and what "the" is until no one wants to debate anymore until the right is in power again left to try to bloat the government and spend with no regard for anyone or anything. Should she stay? IMO, it matters not to me. I can take or leave her. But, I know exactly what will happen.

Partly correct. She loves being in from of a camera. Pelosi is only one of many Congresspeople that have the country so upset with Congress, Barney Frank is another, so is Murther. Her biggest problem is her mouth, and the lies that come out of it, and the insults of the American people. But repubs also have some on the list. This is not a unique problem with the dems.

The 2010 election will return Pelosi to Congress. depending on if it is a repub house or a dem house is another thing. Even I think the dems will not reelect her as Speaker.

Again, this thread has taken a completely different tack from the article from the start since it did not talk about Pelosi much at all. Why is it that people hang on her every word then turn it into a source of anger? Because people hate Pelosi. My comment stands.

Quoting AeroWesty (Reply 12):

I'm sorry if you folks feel I painted with too broad a brush. I do not mean to say that everyone conservative hates Pelosi, or even that everyone conservative that hates Pelosi hates her for reasons they cannot explain. But I do feel that a large proportion of the people who have an emotional, gutteral dislike for Pelosi cannot substantiate why they hate her.

Don't be so sure of that; not all PA Democrats necessarily support Senator Specter. With Rep. Sestak officially running now, the 2010 Democratic primary may not be a cakewalk for Specter.

Back to Speaker Pelosi:

Quoting KC135TopBoom (Reply 22):
The 2010 election will return Pelosi to Congress. depending on if it is a repub house or a dem house is another thing.

And THAT'S the key right there. Although Speaker Pelosi's fate on the legislative bench is ultimately in the hands of voters in her district; the one sure way to prevent her from keeping the Speaker's gavel beyond 2010 would be for voters OUTSIDE her district to vote in a GOP majority. If that were to happen and if she were still re-elected; the best she could hope for would be the post of House Minority Leader, aposition she held prior to the 2006 elections.

One thing to keep in mind that back in 1994, not only did the GOP obtain a majority in the House for the first time in decades; then-Speaker Tom Foley was also voted out of his district that same year. Similar could happen to Speaker Pelosi if she keeps burning bridges so to speak.

•Administering the oath of office to House Members.

•Presiding over debate, recognizing Members to speak on the floor, and preserving order; or delegating that power to another Member of Congress.

•Setting the legislative agenda.

•Leading the appointment process for the chairs of the various committees and subcommittees in the House, including conference committees which negotiate final versions of legislation.

I suppose the last two could be twisted to mean...

her job is to deliver 218 votes for the legislation Obama supports

but I think that is a stretch.
My point was her job is to run the House of Representatives, not just get the Presidents legislation passed. In fact, if that is all she did, then there would be a problem with the whole check and balance our government is supposed to have.

Similar could happen to Speaker Pelosi if she keeps burning bridges so to speak.

Ain't gonna happen. Her district is very safe.
Even if we don't agree with her on some things, most here are happy that we have a representative excel to the House Speaker position. For the most part, the SF Bay Area has always been left out of the positions of power in Washington.
Also, you should see the people that have attempted to run against her. They are truly mental cases. Mostly nuts from the Green Party, Peace & Freedom, Socialist and the occasional Republican nut. The last Republican that ran against her promised to not represent our district in Congress.   Wow!
How stupid is that?

Thomas Foley represented a conservative district in eastern Washington.

If your not going to read the thread, address any of the points trying to be made, or try conveying your opinion in a respectful well presented way that isn't some diatribe on Republicans, FOX, or others who disagree with you, why bother posting? A pounding of the chest for the sake of showing your already closed mind? You don't care what anyone says in response, so why don't you save the planet and spare us the wasted bandwidth. Not everyone here can debate in a rationally manner I'll give you that, but if you want to just give up on logical debate or the exchange of different ideas, than I recommend trying working for a network the likes of FOX or blogging, rather than participating in a forum that is, for better or worse, a melting pot of different idea's meant to provoke some meaningful discussion.

Am I the only one sick of this kind of attitude by members on of both left and right?

Whatever it's probably a lost cause.

As to the thread I feel Nancy Pelosi is a threat to her party come 2010 barring some sort of gag order. Her constituents are pleased and really that's all it boils down to. She has a massive ego and she wouldn't resign, not only for herself, but because of the power vacuum such a move would create.

the article is only tertiarily about Pelosi.

Really? The subtitle to the linked article is: "Heads should roll -- beginning with Nancy Pelosi's!"

Quoting D L X (Reply 23):
Again, this thread has taken a completely different tack from the article from the start since it did not talk about Pelosi much at all.

That's funny. No one mentioned anything about hating Pelosi until your post.

Quoting D L X (Reply 23):
BTW, I thought you had a lifetime ban or something. Welcome back.

Nope, and thank you!  Smile

Truest words in this entire thread so far. 18 months and nothing's changed. I was thinking that maybe I'd come home tonight and there'd be some discussion going regarding Pelosi's roll in the health care debate as Speaker of the House, but I don't see anything like that at all.

Guess there's no point in starting one if everyone's just going to yammer on about their feelings about Pelosi, rather than her role as stated in the article.

It makes no sense for the Democrats to replace Pelosi as Speaker with a moderate Democrat.

If a moderate is appointed to Speaker, the Republicans will paint him/her as a villain just as they have Pelosi. Since the moderates tend to come from more moderate/toss up districts, this now risks having the Speaker's district turn against them and vote him/her out. It would be quite embarrassing for the Democrats to have the Speaker of the House voted out by their own district. At least with Pelosi the Democrats can let the Republicans take their best shot at her and know she will still get reelected.

Now, if another liberal Democrat from a very liberal district wants to take a crack at the Speaker position, that's different. It might come down to whether that person would be more accommodating to President Obama's agenda or not.

Now that's an interesting point. In what ways do you feel Pelosi is less than accommodating to the President's agenda, or could do better to promote it?

I guess that kinda came out wrong.

Honestly, I don't follow politics enough to give specific examples, however I'm sure there have been disagreements between the two on elements of legislation. There always will be. She may in fact be more accommodating than any other liberal Democrats. I just don't know and was simply trying to think of a reason other than a scandal to remove her as Speaker of the House.

I see your point. If you look at their roles within the federal government, I agree with you that the Speaker of the House is independent from the President. However, with respect to their roles as Democratic Party leaders, Obama outranks Pelosi. As President, Obama is effectively the head of the party, and sets the party's legislative agenda. It's then Pelosi's responsibility as a Democratic leader to get that agenda through the House.
