YYZ Meet/Meat -- Lets Get Serious This Time!

Thu Aug 13, 2009 8:15 pm

Hey all,

Okay YYZ'ers (and friends from all over) -- It's time to get serious.

It has been WAY too long since we had a organized, well-attended, well advertised YYZ Meet, and I'm taking the reins on this one...

Unlike past threads, where we focussed on days for a particular planes arrival, or focussed on specific individuals being able to attend, this one will be 2 dates, lets pick the best out of both dates.

Suggested Dates: Saturday August 22 or Saturday August 29th

Lets not focus on who can't come, or focus on a specific airplane, lets focus on getting together!!!!

There's a whole new group of people who I see around YYZ quite frequently, who I don't know, and who haven't experienced the now famous YYZ Meet, so it's time! Old timers and new Timers are allllllll welcome!

And, I WILL create a Facebook Group for those who would like to go. LOL

Lets get some chatter going guys!

Pretty short notice.... 22nd is impossible for me. 29th depends on my roster - as usual  Smile

I'd prefer the 29th as there might be a chance I attend.

I don't care about which date, either one, but this is attempt 4 at this year... even if we can't get a big group, lets just get the locals out... never see anyone out much anymore?

Absolutely no disrespect intended to either of you guys, but.. we have been trying to put this on for about 2 years now, and it just hasn't happened. And, 7 out of 10 times, out of town'ers never show up.

I think that's why the meet thread always dies -- there's just too many variables, and we just have to set a date, and do it.

Summer ends here rather abruptly in early September, and almost everyone agreed that long-weekends are NOT a good choice, so we're kinda stuck. It IS last minute.

If it's too short for you, we'll have a late-spring one next year, and plan for it well in advanced so everyone can come from out of town!

Agreed -- that's why I decided to do this -- it's just a shame that we keep passing it up because we can't settle on a date or out-of-towners can't come in...

Quoting WILCO737 (Reply 6):

There's no way I'll be able to do the 22nd. But I'm moving to Rochester (University of Rochester) on the 25th... although I'll be in orientation, there's always the *remote* possibility I could make it   But don't change the date just for me. I'll come visit some other time if anything.

In June, we had a small meet-up at JFK, and it was just four of us (me, mmedford, JETnyc, and hoons90). So anything counts =]

I'm in either day, but next Saturday I won't be able to get there any earlier than 3:30 because I work until 2:00. No problem as long as I can get out there and get to meet people. And I don't know when I work the next week.

You switching to an A340, 747, or whatever they fly here in the spring? Or does LH cargo fly to YYZ?

That is true. IF I live in FRA, but I don't. So add another 1 hour for the flight to FRA. 1.5 hours transit in FRA, 1 hour earlier in HAM for the flight to FRA, so it is 11.5 hours already Big grin

But I am working on the 22nd anyway.. So not an option. 29th, I don't know, I am on reserve, but maybe I get a flight to YYZ Big grin

At this point, if it seems like the weekend of the 29th would be better (it appears that more people would be able to come out on that weekend, and it gives everyone an extra week), does the 29th sound okay to everyone?

JAG? YOu and I started the 22'nd thing, but are you flexible for the 29th?

Since most of us are at YYZ for the entire day anyways (camped out with our camping chairs LOL) if people have work, etc, just show up when you can!

Sounds like we have a BIT of a meet going here!

Not a lot to see at night. We park at some weird spot where you cannot be seen from outside the airport, at least I cannot see a lot from there...
But once we were standing on a taxiway for 30 minutes because CX cargo was delayed and YYZ has only one widebody cargo parking spot  Yeah sure

sounds like the infield... and you can get there though it's not easy... and depending where you park you may or may not be viewable from "publicly accessible" areas.

Anyways, i think im gonna go back out today, its sooooo nice out.

I believe LH Cargo has their facilities at Vista Cargo. You can usually see the big yellow DHL DC-8 and UPS A300 from Airport Road. If LH cargo parks at the infield (where CX cargo parks) you can try taking COnvair Drive all the way to Britannia and park in one of the lots near the fence. It looks like you should get a good view of the ramp there, although I don't really remember seeing much when I'd go there. There aren't usually many planes parked at the infield cargo terminal. Maybe a 727 that does the cargo flights for Cubana, and CX/Cargolux/LH Cargo and Cubana's own Tupolev.

well today was a bit of a bust alas... VERY hazy and not much to see... just to usual LH, BA, AZ, AF, 9W... about the only thing of any note was a colorful (purple/blue, gold and silver) private PC-12 that hid up behind the skycharter hangar.

I am just living 40 min. west of YYZ (YHM) but still both dates are too short of a notice, but would like to be there next year!!!! if more notice is given

Ok guys,

this is funny. I just received a change in my roster for August and guess what: YYZ it is.
I arrive on the 27th in the afternoon and leave on the 29th earliy in the morning off to ATL.
So I cannot really attend on the 29th, but if someone has off on the 27th or 28th we can meet up then.

I'll see if I can make it one of the days, which day would you want to meet up with people? And the 29th looks very nice so far...for weather.

I am leaving on the 29th at 5am or so... So I cannot really attend this official meet then.

But if some of you guys have off on the 28th, we could meet on that day... I'd like to be shown the spotting places in YYZ as I have seen some nice shots from YYZ on a.net.

Maybe some of you guys can take a picture of our landing on the 27th at around 1:20pm. Yes, at daylight Big grin

the only way i'm getting there on that day is if i have a van full of kids after 6 pm, which may be a wee bit of trouble with a almost 2 year old. I'm 50/50 for that day.

Ah well. It is a weekday, so I don't expect that too many people show up as the meet is planned for the 29th. But that is where I am leaving again... heading for the long haul flight to ATL Big grin

22nd and 29th are both no good for me.

Wilco and YYZflyer (if you're able to get a day off), I'd be able to make it to YYZ on the 28th to meet up with you guys.

Question, for those of you around YYZ: How's traffic on the QEW on Fridays? Should I hit any major traffic heading up from the Peace Bridge?

Well I can make it on the 28, I'm not working, what time do you wanna get out Wilco?

I'm just sitting around at work right now on my phone because the power is out...hurray for thunderstorms and tornados. :P

The QEW is a toss-up everyday of the week, and time. If there are no incidents, you should plan for some moderate-heavy volume delays, but if a tractor trailer flips, your pretty much finished unless your ahead of it. OPP usually closes the highway for several hours, and foe the first few, you are sometimes stuck there.

Land on Runway 23 and give me a wave, will see you about 26km west of YYZ. (I will be the kid jumping and waving with a camera !!!  Silly I will be sure to look out that day around 1:00pm (in case your early) and snap a pic and post it here. Will be ncie seeing the MD11-F come in around that time, right after the AF 747/340.
