Can Anyone Identify This Spider?

Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:26 pm

I found this spider in my bathroom sink today it looks like a Brown Recluse but I know that they are sometimes misidentified. Another thing is they're not native to Southern California not to say they haven't been spotted.

You should see the spider I saw out in the garden earlier...

It looks like a Hobo Spider. Very bad bite if you get one. They like to come indoors in the later summer months, or so it seems.

It does look similar to a Brown Recluse, except for three things:
1. Brown Recluses have a distinctive pattern on their thorax that most often resembles a violin in shape.
2. Brown Recluses (the ones I've seen, anyway) tend to have an abdomen that is somewhat lighter in color than the rest of their body.
3. The rear legs of a Brown Recluse are proportionately somewhat longer than those of the pictured spider.

Here's a pic-

Some of the pictures on the net look like the hobo a little, from what I read though there have been no documented cases in Southern Cal. There have been a few sightings of Brown Recluses from shipping, people bringing them in from Mexico. I also seen there are Desert Recluses close by.

The diameter reaches the size of a quarter leg to other leg although these new pics I just took make the spider much darker.

I seen that earlier. There are some pics that make the spider I found look really close and others like the one you found.

I had a spider scare about a year ago ... I was going to sleep and thought I felt something light move by my hand, but assumed it was just air or a mosquito or something, so I moved my hand a few inches away. then I felt it again! I literally jumped out of bed, turned on a light, and found a huge spider crawling on my sheets! I hate spiders (even though I know they are good for houses since they kill other insects and generally keep to themselves, but they give me the creeps). So I killed it and spent the next hour combing the internet for photos to compare it to known poisonous species to determine if it matched any of them. Luckily, it looked very much like a typical house spider:

Which is probably what you ran into as well.
