Nickelodeon To Build Theme Park In New Orleans

Tue Aug 18, 2009 5:59 pm

...at the old Six Flags site, to be specific. If all goes as planned construction will begin this fall and will be complete in 2010. This could lead to more tourism in the area if done correctly.

Word is they are planning on building a flood wall around the park so it doesn't share the same fate as Six Flags if a hurricane hits the area. Katrina flooded Six Flags with five feet of water and it has never reopened.

And a couple thousand armed security guards (Blackwater?) to keep the gangbangers under control, too?

It's good to see that someone is finally going to do something on that site. Based on the damage reports I've read, Six Flags pretty much wrote all of the rides and 80% of the buildings off because they were all damaged beyond repair due to the month plus immersion in brackish water. The only ride that didn't suffer too much damage was taken apart and sent to another Six Flags park.

Six Flags never really intended to rebuild the park, as they were already in bad financial straits even before Katrina closed the park. SFNO was said to be the least profitable park in the chain, and since they were leasing the park, they really would never recoup the costs to rebuild.

It's at Six Flags Fiesta Texas (San Antonio) and is now called Goliath (the wife and oldest son rode it and loved it).

Does Nickelodeon have a theme park elsewhere?

They have the theme park within the Mall Of America up in Minnesota, and also have Nickelodeon Central/Universe theme areas within Kings Island, Kings Dominion, Carowinds, Great America, Canada's Wonderland, Dreamworld (Which is in Australia.), and Movie Park (Germany).

Probably what is going to happen is that the new operator of the park, Southern Star Amusement, is going to theme the rebuilt park as a Nickelodeon park. The Nickelodeon brand is a very strong brand and would definitely attract more tourists than it did as a Six Flags park (Most Six Flags parks tend to attract visitors from within a 100-200 mile range of their parks.). I would not be surprised if a Nickelodeon themed hotel is part of the park as well (The one at Universal Studios has been quite successful and Nickelodeon has teamed up with Marriott to open up 20 Nickelodeon Family Resorts, which are based on the hotel in Orlando and will feature a water park.).

Southern Star is trying to buy up the 86 acres of adjoining land from the city to be used for hotel space, etc.

I'm guessing that the brass at Allegiant will be watching this closely. MSY might finally become a hub again.

Here's some more information...

"Plans for the park include the addition of brand-new rides including several major water-based attractions and the renovation of existing attractions, all to be themed with Nickelodeon's popular programs and characters, including: SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer,Diego, Go! and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Nickelodeon costumed characters, live interactive entertainment, retail shops, games, food establishments and more also will be featured. Officials said construction would begin this fall on "Nickelodeon Universe New Orleans" and the park is expected to open by the end of 2010."

What, no "Angry Beavers" log flume ride? No "Invader Zim" roller coaster?

Hey, we've got plenty of gangbangers here too - we'll take any left-over Blackwater mercenaries here in L.A. as for as I'm concerned.

It seems kind of ironic to place a family/kids theme park in the area near a city best known as an 'adult theme park'. Then again, not everybody in the region is a hedonist and hopefully it will bring some badly needed jobs and tourism $$$'s to the area.

This isn't a theme park. It's an amusement park. Off-the-shelf amusement parks are not a tourism draw, even when a big studio's name is slapped onto it (i.e. Warner Brothers and Paramount parks).

Though it's great for the New Orleans community as fun place for locals to visit.

I think it can be a good regional draw....at least moreso than the Six Flags park was. I guess we have to wait and see how it turns out in the end.

Are they not afraid of something similar to Katrina happening in the future, and the investment going down the drain? Isn't NOLA located below sea level, therefore posing a high risk?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm not too familiar with New Orleans. But looking at the eerie pictures of the Six Flags standing in water makes me think twice.

The original post mentions that they are looking into surrounding the park with a flood wall.

I can't imagine any scenario where this park becomes busy/popular enough to impact flight schedules and hub strategies. It's just a rebranded Six Flags.

Nickelodeon announces new ride where children can ride the "Katrina Rapids down Bourbon"...couldnt have picked a worse city to open a theme park. Its dirtier now (if that possible) than it was prior to katrina...

Also, you have no idea what you're talking about. The downtown area is much cleaner than it ever has been. Not sure where you are hanging out. But it doesn't matter...with an attitude like yours I doubt the city wants you as a visitor anyway. Have fun in Houston, if that's even possible.

There was a story on television last night and I only caught the tail end of it (my life story) and one of the last stories was that a theme park (somewhere) was going to introduce a ride in honor of Dale Earnhardt. I can not remember the name of the ride but it had something to do with the nickname "Intimidator." Could it be this Nickelodeon theme park in The Big Easy?

The roller coaster will be called Intimidator 305 and will be at King's Dominion in Richmond, VA.
