Onboard Network On Laptop Dead. Question

Mon Aug 24, 2009 9:31 pm

Hey all,

Suddenly my networking capabilities on my HP notebook died. Wireless doesn't work, even tried wired directly into my DSL modem and still won't acknowledge a network.

I'm assuming the network cards on laptops are integrated into motherboards?

That being the case, probably need a new motherboard? Does anybody know a ballpark cost for a new motherboard plus install? If it's over $350 I'll probably just buy a new laptop.

Thanks!

Happened to my company laptop. Just brought it to the guys who fix this, waited 6 weeks and now it is working

I guess so. I don't know how old your laptop is, but nowadays decent ones aren't too expensive anymore, especially in Canada Big grin

Hi Wilco,

My laptop is two years old. In Canada I can get a brand new one with better hardware specs for around $600-$700. Might be better just to get a new one.

If it's only the wireless network that's gone, you can just buy a USB or PC-Card wireless network card. You can get those here for $A50 for wireless G, $A90 for wireless N, probably cheaper in Canada.

I'm afraid it's not just the wireless. I have lost all networking capabilities.

Are you sure it's not a software/OS issue? Anything change on your PC recently? Have you tried hitting the WiFi switch just in case (in most cases shouldn't affect wired, though)

A lot of Dell laptops in their default configurtion will turn off the built-in NIC if you're on battery and there's no cable connected (and won't turn the NIC back on until either you're on AC or you reboot the laptop, depending on the age of the laptop), though it would sound like that's not your problem

If you have updated drivers recently, try doing a system restore. If that doesn't help, or if you didn't update your network drivers, try formatting the harddrive and re-installing everything (Windows, Drivers from the respective CDs, etc.), to see if the problem is hardware or driver related.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary regarding drivers etc. It literally just stopped working. I've tried everything short of reformatting to troubleshoot. I think a reformat may be in order. Luckily I have all of my data backed up on an external HD and my desktop.

What you have is a very common issue with certain HP models. You only need to get a USB WLAN network adapter (looks like a memory stick) and start using that.
If you detach it, always replug it in the same physical connector, or you'll be asked for the network password each time you're trying to connect to a network -- or until you've used it succesfully in all USB connectors of the computer, typically 3 in a laptop.
