2009 NFL Predictions

Thu Aug 27, 2009 8:15 pm

Alrighty folks, the NFL is back for the 09-10 season and this is the thread to post all your predictions!

Will Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez fold like deck chairs on the Titanic?
Will Tom Brady get his knee tattooed again?
Will T.O. actually show up to games?

Feel free to list your predictions here! As for me I predict....

Drew Brees will throw for 7,500 yards and the running backs will rush for only 200.
Brett Farve will age 250 years in 4 games
Al Davis and Ralph Wilson still won't die
75% of Dade County will own some part of the Dolphins
Jacksonville will sell 100 seats for every home game
Troy Paulomalu will get engaged to Cousin It
Michael Vick will have an unfortunate incident with PETA, a blender and a certain part of his anatomy.

Bombs away!

The Detroit Lions will win at least one more game than they did last year (come on, that should be a given!)
Dick Lebeau still will not exit the fountain of youth...

Wait? Detroit has a football team??? Since when?? I thought what they showed last year was cheerleaders dressed in pads!

Oh wait..... cheerleaders in pads would hit harder and have a better secondary.... I guess that WAS the Lions then Big grin

Do they even have cheerleaders? Patriots all the way this year. The haters can talk about spygate and whatnot, get over it. That was years ago. You can't take away the SB wins. And if we stay healthy this year, then we should be good.

This is the year that the Chargers will be in the Super Bowl again. On paper,Chargers are strong and deep in most departments.Chargers seem to have shore up the defense and barring any key injuries,no more inconsistencies as in past years under Turner. If there any gray areas,it would have to be LT and the maybe the front line protecting Rivers. But this is based on two games.I would like to see the Cowboys in the big show with us,just to beat Jerry Jones, but the Dallas has too many holes and questions to fill.

Team predictions:

AFC

Chargers
Steelers
Colts
Dolphins

Wild Cards

Ravens
Patriots

AFC Championship

Chargers win vs.Steelers

NFC:

Bears,I think might surprise some people
Saints are do!
Giants
49ers,OK,it's a west coast thing

Wild cards
Cowboys
Vikings

NFC Championship

Cowboys vs. Giants

Super Bowl game

Chargers vs.Cowboys(but not likley)

Detroit will not finish with the worst record in the NFL this season, the Rams will. Detroit will beat the Saints in Week One, but will not win again until Week 8, when they play the Rams. They will go 4-12.

Atlanta will win the NFC South on a tiebreaker with Carolina. Michael Turner will break the Falcons' single season rushing record of 1846 yards set by Jamal Anderson during the 1998 season. Eric Dickerson's NFL record of 2105 is probably safe for another season, though Turner may come close to 2000 yards.

The NFL will force Jerry Jones to raise the new center hung video display at Cowboys Stadium after several more controversial punts that strike it.

I don't think the NY Giants will be worth a damn.
The Titans could have two rushers get close to 2,000 yds.
The Cowboys will disappoint.
Favre will surprise a lot of people.
Ray Rice will have a breakout year at RB.
TO will ruin another QB; if he plays.
Patriots are overated despite Brady coming back healthy.
Philip Rivers is overpaid.
Drew Brees will take the Saints to Miami in February.

Quoting Srbmod (Reply 6):
the Rams will

Stephen Jackson won't let that happen and if they can't make Bulger work, they'll trade for a mid-season replacement.

I'd put money on the Patriots (as much as I don't like them) having more wins than BOTH of the teams from the state of Missouri combined (Chiefs and Rams).

As a Kansas City fan, I almost wish the team would move. They are bad, bad, bad. I'd say we get 4th in the AFC West, behind the Raiders.

Notice the StirThePot emoticon next to my remark.  Wink

Seriously, Sanchez is a bit too overhyped, especially in the Latin media. All just because he's the first Mexican-American to make it to the NFL or something. Sure, he may have played a decent college season last year, but playing in the NFL isn't exactly an easy endeavour.

At most, I give the Jets a wildcard spot, that's it. As for the team in "my" market, the Denver Broncos, it's going to be business as usual (no playoff spot this season). Brett Favre has already lost his credibility when he decided to go out of retirement after entering retirement for the second time in two years and I doubt the Vikings will go far, Michael Vick won't play a single minute this season (regardless of whether he's reinstated or McNabb can stay the starter for an entire season), and the Cowboys, even with their new superarena in Arlington, won't even have a grasp at the playoffs this season and will embarass themselves yet again.

As for Superbowl predictions, I'll get back to you once the playoffs start.  Wink

This season we will have the battle for the bottom of the basement, when Detroit plays Cincinnati on December 6th.

I think the New York Giants will be serious contenders in the NFC. I expect Carolina will be up there too.
In the AFC, I'll be pulling for my Bengals, but I expect it will come down to one of three teams: Chargers, Patriots, & Steelers.

Arizona and Miami will both either have really good seasons or absolutely awful seasons, with the Dolphins coming off their AFC East win following their 1-15 season and Arizona winning the NFC following mediocre at best seasons.

I was watching the San Diego vs Atlanta pre-season match today. Apart from all the QB rotation on both sides (which is normal for the pre-season, I know that), it was a pretty exiting match, almost of playoff quality.

Heck, when the Steelers had a 6-10 record in 2003, I still rooted for them. If you want really bad, look at the early years of the Steelers. They stunk up the NFL through 4 decades!

As for the Bengals, it's not all bad. They need a more competent head coach like we talked about before.

Aaron Rodgers has been as close to perfect as one can get. Their new 3-4 defense has been dominant with the 1st team. I predict Packers will make a strong play-off run this year as long as they stay healthy!

I see the Broncos flopping this year, bad! 4-12 is my prediction. McDaniels have BEYOND a full plate more than the season itself. He can't even get his players to behave, so far..... He lost Cutler to an ugly trade and now he might just lose Brandon Marshall.....

I'm no NFL fan (I am more college than anything else...) but I see the Seahawks doing ok this year. I am guessing they might go 9-7 with a wild card.

First, I put almost no value in preseason performance. I like the bloggers, reporters, coaches comments a lot better.

More importantly, you are right that the Packers are improved but they are still a year or two away. Rodgers is a good young QB, but the problem is the Packers defense is in a state of transition right now. They probably will be on the outside looking in this season, but the Packers will compete down the road.

As a Pats fan, I think their offense will look great this year, but their defense will be average. They could really use a safety that HITS people, like Lawyer Malloy and Rodney Harrison did. Also a pro-bowl caliber cover guy like Ty Law or Asante would be a big step up. Right now the Pats defense doesn't scare anybody, and has shown last season and this weekend that they are suspect to giving up the big play. I think the offense is good enough to get them to the playoffs, but not much further, unless they discover someone that can bring the defense to a higher level.

Here are my predictions:

1. Mark Sanchez will be a big time bust
2. Matthew Stafford will be a bust
3. Crabtree wont play in his rookie year
4. Bengals GM will be kicking himself for signing Andre Smith
5. Brett Favre's inevitable journey into oblivion is certain. He will take the Vikings with him.
6. Indy will go 9-7
7. Houston will be in the wild card game
8. Romo will disappoint in December again. Jerry will lose his patience and Kitna will be the QB by mid December. Cowboys will win a playoff game with Jon Kitna as the QB
9. Detroit will go 1-15
10. Jaguars will not make the playoffs
11. McNabb will ensure that the Eagles wont end up in a tied game again.
12. Mount TO will explode sometime between the first and the sixteenth game.
13. Atleast one team from the NFC East will play for the NFC Championship game
14. Elite 8 teams: NFC: Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Panthers AFC: Chargers, Ravens, Patriots, Steelers

Predictions:

AFC East: Patriots (1), Dolphins, Bills, Jets
AFC North: Steelers, Ravens*, Cleveland, Cincinnati
AFC South: Titans, Colts*, Texans, Jaguars
AFC West: Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders

NFC East: Giants (1), Eagles*, Cowboys*, Redskins
NFC North: Bears, Vikings, Packers, Lions
NFC South: Falcons, Saints, Panthers, Buccaneers
NFC West: Cardinals, Seahawks, Niners, Rams

(1) - Top seed; * - Wild Card
Wild Card Round: Titans, Colts, Cardinals, Eagles advance
Second Round: Patriots, Steelers, Giants, Falcons advance
Championships: Patriots, Giants
Super Bowl: Patriots win in a rematch

West divisions (both AFC/NFC) will be absolutely miserable this year. Chargers and Cards will win it, helped out by getting to play three low-level teams this year.
East divisions will be the most difficult, especially in the NFC.
NFC North is overrated - I'm not thinking Favre will be anything close to the savior. Bears aren't anything special - the best of a mediocre bunch. NFC South will be competitive, but none of those four teams especially jumps out.

As others have done...here's some random thoughts-

The Patriots don't have the defense they had in the past.

The Titans aren't, and won't be as good as they were last year.

The Giants?  rotfl

I hate to say it, but I really do think the Cowboys will go deep into the playoffs this year.  yuck

The Chargers are going to be good. Scary good I think.

The Dolphins will barely squeak into the playoffs again, and loose in the first round.

Atlanta is a good sleeper to pick, same with Jacksonville.

If I had to pick a Superbowl matchup...and maybe the Championship round before...

Steelers-Colts with the Steelers beating them rather easily.

Cowboys-Falcons with Atlanta squeaking one out.

Steelers winning it all again.

As much as it pains me to say this (I'm a lifelong Bears fan), I have to agree. But the games don't count just yet and pre-season means less in football than just about any other sport.
Da Bears instantly improved when they got Cutler, but he doesn't have any receivers to throw to, so that could be a problem (ya think?). I still think he coulsd will them to 9-7 which may be enough to win that division. I don't think the Vikings are a threat - Favre will implode and take the rest of the team with him.
Other predictions

Quoting Force13 (Thread starter):
Will Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez fold like deck chairs on the Titanic?

Stafford has bust written all over him. The guy has a cannon for an arm and decent size, but otherwise, not much going for him. He's basically like an overhyped Kyle Boller. I also don't think the guy is that smart or capable of managing an NFL offense. The only way he has even a remote chance is if the Lions sit him out for a year.

Sanchez could go either way--it's just a question of him surrounding himself with the right people. I think he'll struggle for a couple of years and then hit his stride (which means he probably won't be playing for the Jets by the time he gets good).

Quoting SATexan (Reply 36):
1. Mark Sanchez will be a big time bust
2. Matthew Stafford will be a bust
3. Crabtree wont play in his rookie year

Of those three, I think Sanchez will have the best career. Crabtree is a moron. He's never going to get a better offer at this stage than what the niners are offering. If he sits out a year, he's maybe a late first round pick at best, and he won't be offered nearly as much money.

Quoting FXramper (Reply 8):
The Cowboys will disappoint.

Is it really "disappointing" when a team consistently disappoints and any fan with the slightest bit of sense thinks they will disappoint? The team has no discipline or consistency and Roy Williams ain't the answer at wideout and will be a bust of an acquisition.
The Cowboys won't make the playoffs. Wade Phillips will be fired, and Jerry will appoint another lackey to replace him

I can't wait to see Sam Bradford in the NFL.

All I hear is how good he supposedly is. Gee...the ONE game I watched him play in on TV last year...he's glued to Stoops on the sidelines. If he had to call plays on his own, he's FUBAR.
This isn't where I parked my car...

NFC North: Bears, Vikings, Packers, Lions

Quoting SATexan (Reply 36):

5. Brett Favre's inevitable journey into oblivion is certain. He will take the Vikings with him.

Quoting ER757 (Reply 40):

As much as it pains me to say this (I'm a lifelong Bears fan), I have to agree. But the games don't count just yet and pre-season means less in football than just about any other sport.
Da Bears instantly improved when they got Cutler, but he doesn't have any receivers to throw to, so that could be a problem (ya think?). I still think he coulsd will them to 9-7 which may be enough to win that division. I don't think the Vikings are a threat - Favre will implode and take the rest of the team with him.

You are all forgetting that the Vikings won the division last year with Gus and Tavaris Jackson. Brett Favre is certainly an upgrade and Percy Harvin will have an impact. The much underrated MLB E.J. Henderson is back as well.

Vikings will win NFC North.

That is until they meet my good friends Jared Allen and Kevin Williams.

The Vikings are taking the NFC North this year.

Not with Brett Favre as QB.

Look at Monday night...he didn't complete a single pass that he threw more than 11 yards downfield.....everything was dink and dunk. That's not going to move any safeties out of any box. Factoring in the sacks, his yards/attempt was 6.5.

Defensive coordinators who are paying attention know that he's not going to hurt teams downfield.....last year, he completed 22 passes over 11 yards and almost half of them were to the other team.

Enjoy Monday night and that illegal bush league cut block....it's not going to get any better and there'll be days when it's definitely going to be worse. If you think that Brett Favre is going to be content to dink and dunk when the game is on the line and he can play hero then you obviously haven't been playing attention.

Get ready for disappointment.

And the Williams Sisters still have to serve their suspension too.

The guy has been on the team for 2 weeks! That fade to Percy Harvin should have been caught as well.

See the thing that everyone forgets is that Minnesota is a run-first team. Favre is here to make the play when needed and at least give us a passing game. We took the NFC North last year with a sub-par quarterback stable.

Lets not forget that the Vikings total defense came in 6th last year and has had the best rushing defense 3 years running (no pun intended). GB and CHI were 20th and 21st respectively in total defense.

How has EITHER of those teams upgraded enough to beat MIN?

Which is why the Vikings will take the division despite Favre.

Chicago's defense still has a lot of question marks.

AFC East: Patriots (1), Dolphins, Bills, Jets
AFC North: Steelers, Ravens*, Cleveland, Cincinnati
AFC South: Titans, Colts*, Texans, Jaguars
AFC West: Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders

So the Steelers won't even make the playoffs? I think that's a little far fetched. Granted, it did happen the last time around, but I think they're a little more matured now.

Quoting GQfluffy (Reply 38):
If I had to pick a Superbowl matchup...and maybe the Championship round before...

Steelers-Colts with the Steelers beating them rather easily.

Cowboys-Falcons with Atlanta squeaking one out.

Steelers winning it all again.

Now that's a little far-fetched the other way, but at least they're in the Playoffs in this scenario. I think if all goes well, they should make it back to the AFC Title game. They're disciplined, driven, and oh yeah, the core group is back on both offense and defense, especially on defense...

I predict they'll take the AFC North again and make a deep playoff run at the very least...

You know what would be kinda neat? A Vikings-Steelers matchup. Maybe THEN Favre will retire for good?  Wink  stirthepot

As does their offense. Cutler seems lost, and it seems he has no one to throw it to.
