Tue Sep 01, 2009 3:42 pm

Hi All

Im not very technologically minded so am wondering if any out there in a.net land can help

If you're looking for something that'll be the least amount of fuss to get used to, make sure you get one with Windows XP. Bear in mind that with a netbook you wouldn't be able to watch DVDs or play games from the last couple of years, but then again you haven't said you'd want to do that so it should be fine. I've been looking at getting one for a while, but haven't quite persuaded myself that I don't want to save up longer and get a 'proper' computer...

I've only heard good things about the Samsung NC10 series - at £289 (ebuyer.com) it's not the cheapest (but by no means is it the most pricey) of netbooks available, but from the little experience I've had it feels more expensive than its price suggests! 10" screen, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, 1.6GHz processor, built-in wireless networking, an integrated webcam, and Windows XP Home preinstalled. Hard to say what the battery life is supposed to be, but the reviews seem to be positive in that respect.
Have you ever felt like you could float into the sky / like the laws of physics simply don't apply?

I've got the previous generation of the Acer Aspire One with a 10" screen and I'm pretty happy with it. It came with 1GB of RAM but I replaced it with 2GB.

Definitely go with one with a 10" or 11" screen. What sold me on the Acer Aspire One with a 10" screen was that the keyboard was not too small. I tested a netbook with an 8" screen and the keyboard was way too small. Also make sure to get one with a 6-cell battery, as you will get at least 6 hours off of a full charge depending on what programs you use.

My biggest complaint about most of the netbooks is that they use such a glossy finish on them. The worst are the black ones, as fingerprints show up even worse than other colors. I bought a skin for mine (A wood-toned one for a bit of a Steampunk look to it.) so to cut down on the fingerprints showing up so badly.

I've got an Acer Aspire One, and it's probably my best computer! (With my wife, we have 6 desktops / laptops between us). Small, light, keyboard not too fiddly like the Eeepc, big screen, 120gb HDD, webcam, wireless... All working perfectly under Linux, but you can get it with XP instead. Only downside is the battery life of about 2h, but the new version has a much longer life (my manage has the new one and loves it). I'm afraid I don't know prices as mine was a gift.

I totally agree with Srbmod and Signol. After you're going to use only for surfing and chattin' get an Acer. It's cheap after all. But I don't recommend you going with one of these 10" or 11" screens. 15" sounds pretty normal for me.  Smile

Go for 10" Asus or Dell. Acer's aftersales support is crap and the ergonomics of the touchpad and keyboard is subpar compared with Asus.

I use the Samsung NC10. The battery lasts forever (5 hours with WiFi on), the screen is very bright, even at daylight you can read everything just fine. I can highly recommend it.

Sounds like you've got one with the 3-cell battery. When I bought mine, the first thing I asked was if it was the 3-cell or the 6-cell, as I had done quite a bit of research and had it been the 3-cell, I would have passed on the deal I got for it.

I originally was leaning towards an EeePC until I finally got a chance to look at one in person (No way I was going to buy a laptop without getting a feel for it beforehand.). The keyboard on it immediately turned me off.

I don't use the touchpad on my Acer too much, as in general, I'm not a big fan of using the touchpad on a laptop. I plug in a mouse (I've got several old plug in ones from my old computer and the own that came with my current computer.) and go from there. Unless the newer EeePCs have improved keyboards, I have no problems with the keyboard on my Acer.

Just got an HP Mini 110-1025DX for U.S. $329 at Best Buy. It comes with what appears to be standard for netbooks in this category these days: 10 inch screen, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, integrated webcam, Windows XP, etc. Plan on using it at our weekend condo plugged into the wall so battery life is not an issue. One nice thing is the screen has a matte finish instead of glossy which cuts down on glare. So far, so good.

My fiance(e?) wants a netbook, but would prefer a 12" screen, any recommendations for that?  Smile

I have the small Aspire One and I couldn't be happier with it.

It's not good for daily use or lots of typing but taking it to the coffee shop or watching movies on the road its fantastic.

+1.... Thanks to WILCO737's advice I got one myself and its a fab machine. Does everything you need it to and great battery life. Two of my collegues have recently bought them since seeing mine. ARGOS have deals at the moment IIRC.

The Samsung NC10 has joined the ranks of 10-inch netbooks—including the Eee PC 1000H, MSI Wind, and Lenovo IdeaPad S10—and it beats them all. The $499 NC10 may have the same cookie-cutter specs as its competitors, including a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP, but its spacious, well-positioned keyboard and more than 6 hours of battery life make this system our favorite 10-inch netbook yet.
