BMW Augmented Reality Concept

Thu Sep 03, 2009 7:08 pm

This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. BMW is hoping auto technicians of the future will be able to wear glasses which overlay images and instructions to explain technical procedures:

I suppose such technology would also make its way into aircraft assembly and maintenance. Pretty cool stuff.

Very cool stuff. Saw a demo for this the last time I went to my BMW dealership for my $600 oil change.

Doesn't Boeing have a similar system for their wiring technicians? The glasses display a map of the wires, and the technician puts the wires where they are displayed.

Not sure if this is true or not.

Cool technology, but couldn't that be another method to tightly tie BMW owners to their respective dealerships? I don't suppose they would just sell them to any shop, or at the high price...

As Fxramper said: bring on the $1000 oil changes...

It'd be cool for aircraft maintenance though.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

Quoting FlybaurLAX (Reply 4):

What do you ride?

Quoting Francoflier (Reply 5):

Theoretically, such technology would make labor rates lower, by enabling lower-skilled/less-expensive technicians to work more quickly and efficiently.

But unfortunately, I think your vision of the future is probably closer to reality.
