so, my position came up in my favourite city & I applied and was accepted, making the move to the cultural, sporting & corporate capital of Australia, Melbourne!

can't wait, its a little nerve-racking to say the least, house is sorted, car is being trucked over this week...

has anyone here made this type of move? how did handle it? I have found it incredibly stressful and somewhat difficult...now that everything is sorted I am a little more confident, any tips?

I have. Back in 2000 I moved from St. Louis, Missouri to Detroit, Michigan. It was a pain in the butt. I have A LOT of stuff and I had two cars at the time. Now I have more stuff so I don't want to move anytime soon. My mother drove one of my cars. I drove a 28 foot box truck towing a car trailer with my other car on that. I paid some movers to unload the truck and place some of my heavy furniture. I had a job here and knew plenty of people so it wasn't very stressfull as far as that was concerned.

When I was a freshman in high school my parents moved from Denver, Colorado to St. Louis, Missouri. My dad's job transferred him there. I am sure it was stressful on mom and dad, but it was very stressful for me. Being a teenager is tough, but moving to a new state while in high school was really tough.

It is not a big problem, many people move from one big city or state to another everyday, in the US. If you do it yourself, it is a pain in the butt. Does your company pay the moving expenses? If they do, just let them hire the moving company and some of those other details.

US Military families move every 1 to 4 years, and they don't seem to have a problem. When I was in the USAF, I moved 8 times in 22 years, once I did it my self, hoping to make a few bucks. I did, but it was not worth it.

1. Before you pack, get rid of anything you don't really need to keep. I packed and or stored many things that I wished later I had gotten rid of.

2. Prepare before the movers come. You may want to pack somethings yourself, in my case I packed all my own audio equipment in it's original carton.

3. Watch the movers carefully, don't let them pack the garbage or the cat - you may laugh but it's happened. And of course even the best of us can be tempted to steal.

Moved from NY to KY when I was 22.

KY to TX when I was 34, with wife, child and 2 dogs.

TX to KY when I was 37, with wife, 2 children and 2 dogs.

Hope I don't have to move again, it just gets more complicated.

Not sure what banking, insurance, utilities and the like are like in Australia, but here in the states, you just about have to restart everything. New banks and insurance companies, etc. Get that going before you even pack the first box.

Get rid of anything you haven't thought about in a year. During my KY-TX-KY moves, I came across a box that never got unpacked in TX.

Moved from California to Ohio not long after my 21st birthday to pick up a job offer. One of the more nervewracking things I've done -- especially since it was a combination of moving out of the house I grew up in (with essentially no responsibilities/bills), the state I was born and raised in, living alone for the first time, and the vast unknown.

4 years later I think it was one of the best decisions I've made.

As much as I agree with this sadly I haven't done as good a job at following it as I would like. Seriously look at -everything- and figure out if you really want to drag it across the country, pack it, store it, and unpack it. There's stil plenty of stuff two moves later (CA->Apartment->House) that I should chuck but can't bring myself to.

I had stuff that went thru 2 or 3 moves without getting unpacked. When I finally retired and stayed put I unpacked those boxes. It was like Christmas for a while, always making new discoveries!! Then the next day I'm like why did I bother dragging that stuff around for 10 years, obviously I didn't need it.....
