Need To Send Picture With A Resume. Suggestions?

Mon Sep 07, 2009 1:07 am

So there's this pilot job I want to apply to but they request I send a "current photo" of myself. I nearly made the idiotic mistake of sending one of my former profile pics on facebook. Thing is, I'm not sure how I should present myself in the picture.

I'm guessing I should treat the photo as part of the interview. Should I wear a suit? Or just a white button up shirt with a tie? Full body or upper third or face only? Also, I have a 5o clock shadow going on, I'm assuming that will have to disappear as well?

Thx in advance for any ideas  wave

If you have a jacket/sport coat wear it. Tie and button up shirt underneath.... probably shot from the mid chest on up would suffice. And a shave would most certainly be in order.

Absolutely you must look clean, neat and presentable. The way they would want their staff to look in front of the public.
Remember, when you fly for someone, you represent their company wherever you go, wherever you land.
And for heaven's sake, don't be afraid to smile. Not a big silly toothy grin, but an open, FRIENDLY smile that they'd like to see you give the passengers (if there are any).

So yes, shirt and tie minimum. Jacket is a nice touch.
NO SUNGLASSES either on your face or perched on top of your head. TACKY!!!!
Absolutely clean shaven, hair combed, etc.

Framing, I'd say waist up, or perhaps top 1/3 is ok as well.

Good luck.

Yeah, I'd go for the suit and tie, basically what you'd wear if you were going to an interview. I'd take the photo from the upper part of the chest up (in other words, like a passport photo but with a bit more on the bottom).

Though I do have to ask...what sort of pilot job wants a photo?

The question is, why would any employer want a picture of you. What for?!

In any job I applied for, be it a half-assed low pay job or with an airline, I have never sent a picture of me with a resume. IMO, sending a picture with a resume is unprofessional and inappropriate.

LOL! I like that word!

Pretty standard practice in Germany. Get a haircut and a shave and wear a conservative suit with shirt and neck tie. Have the picture taken by a professional photographer (chest upwards, like a passport picture).

While there could be a need to verify idenity with a picture for security checks that may be part of their evaluation process, to me it borders on violations of anti-discrimiation laws to include a picture with a resume.
If you need a picture, consider it has to be as professional as you do your resume. Dress in the style expected at work for the job you would take.

Suggestions?

With a mug like yours? Wear a mask, or a balaclava.  wink

Personally, I think a balaclava is a solid, professional choice, assuming the job you are applying for involves robbing banks.

Or, in this case, customers.  Wink

That still doesn't explain it as someone who is homely could have a legal case for discrimination, especially if they could show they were a good salesperson. Very strange.

In very limited cases it makes sense, modeling, Television, Film.

I don't see how the request is discriminatory. Part of the requirements says they're looking for somebody with "Great Personality, appearance and a people person is a must"

Too bad I look like a 12 year old without my 5 o'clock shadow  Sad

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but unfortunately where the law is concerned the employer can't really factor that in. Anyone of a number of minorities could claim discrimination based on their "appearance" even though they are conforming to the norms of their particular society.

Wear a big red clown tie with yellow poka-dots.

I think he just wanted everyone to know, again, that he's got a C rating and looking for work. I'm pretty sure you don't need a photo to fly a cargo plane full of rubber dog sh*t out of Hong Kong.  Silly

Well I just suited up for my photo session. I look horrid in all of them. O well. I just can't make a natural looking smile. Eh screw it. I'm sending the least crappy one. Wish me luck.  blush

I'm not sure it's legally discriminatory, but I have to admit that the idea of including appearance in the hiring criteria (with the limited exceptions mentioned above like for actors, etc.) kind of rubs me the wrong way.
