Breaking News: McLaren MP4-12C - New Road Car

Wed Sep 09, 2009 3:11 am

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/08/m...tch-of-details-and-images-surface/

And the press release:
http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Se...icial-story-09-09/?content-block=1

In short, 3.8L V8 with twin-turbocharging, 600hp and 600Nm, 8500rpm rev limit, and 80% torque available from 2000rpm. Also, very light. This thing looks very competitive for the money.

The engine is McLaren's own, the M838T, and the transmission is a seamless shift gearbox (a term well known in F1 at the moment). It's looking like a very good successor to the F1, even if it doesn't quite have the savage engine performance of the BMW Motorsport engined F1.

The carbon-fibre tub (moncell) weighs only 80kg. It also has some interesting features like the corner braking, and it also has launch control. And the interior looks pretty good too.

I love it.   Bravo McLaren.

I like it , looks refreshingly new without being outrageous.

Technology content seems about right but the name, wonder why they used MP4-12C?

The C part likely for Coupe but the MP4-12 hardly a celebration of their most successful F1 car!

Cheers

That is nice. I would like one in silver please.
Guess Ferrari has a rival on the road now too from McLaren in the 'supercar' class.

MP4 is hinting at the racing heritage, the 12 apparently some sort of internal quality analysis code, and the C, either coupe or the 3rd evolution of the design (eg, A, B and C).

Hmmm not bad at all. I would've preferred though that they made the car more of an evolution of the original F1, like Porsche has done with the 911, though it does have some slight resemblance of the F1.

I can't wait for Top Gear to test it.

Funny how they mention that they could save weigh using conventional steel discs rather than carbon discs. Quite unexpected...

I wonder how they'll work on the track.

Looks good overall, if a bit pricey. It has biiiig shoes to fill if it's going to be as good as the F1.

I hope that Top Gear is never, ever able to test this car. Nobody ever give them this car! They don't deserve it.

The F1 will still never be surpassed as a concept, and in execution, but this MP4-12C is a good start.

And just for your listening pleasure - enjoy Nick Mason's F1 GTR tested by Autocar:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFLQAEiO7xo&feature=popt02us06
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOcvEFMQ-Vg&feature=channel

It weighs 940kg, has 600hp (not 620), and is geared for just about 180mph. Listen to the second video - you can never get sick of that wonderful engine sound.

What these McLarens really embody is that they are built and designed by people who really love cars, and that reflects in the result. It's designed to be appreciated by people who love driving.  Smile

The only part I don't like if the rear, but overall this is a fine looking car. Being the heir of the mighty McLaren F1 is not an easy task, though  Wink

Yes, that is strange. If you take the Porsche 911 GT2, they save 40 kg by putting carbon-ceramic brakes. I don't see why it should not be the same here?

They don't deserve it.

Why not? What's wrong with Top Gear?

They can test it. They probably will. It doesn't really matter. Clarckson's review of cars might be entertaining, most people know it's biased and scripted for dramatic/comedy effect.

I mean, his favorite cars are the DB9 (because it's British) and the Merc SLS (  vomit ... ), the Bentley conti, and he hates the F1, or anything that comes out of a Porsche factory...

He doesn't like supercars geared towards performance, he prefers those that Paris Hilton buys.

Nothing - but as pay-back for Clarkson's endless swipes at the F1 (mainly because unlike Martin Brundle, he doesn't know how to drive), let them wallow behind all the other media outlets in the rush to get the first review of the car out.  Wink Or let them miss out.

It'll serve him right. I just wish he'd tone down his bias a bit and let facts dictate the direction of the story for once. If it's a good car, then say it is, don't make up lies and half-truths.

McLaren is bigger than Top Gear, and this thing is seriously in demand. Magazines would sell their soul to get an exclusive first test of this car.  Smile

But mostly, he isn't funny any more. Clarkson is going down the path of Australia's own Kyle Sandilands (the radio shock-jock disaster waiting to happen).

This is one of my favourite too! I actually think that it's the best looking of its generation.

Quoting Francoflier (Reply 8):

Indeed. They are not objective at all and I know it. But it's too funny (who thought I could once enjoy British sense of humour?) and the cars they are testing are great.

Quoting Cpd (Reply 9):

Well, everybody has a favourite motosports discipline. Motorsports is not only about F1. As far as I am concerned, I don't mind.

Anyway, let's not turn this thread into a Top Gear one  Wink

We get the UK's Top Gear program on the BBC America channel on cable/dish. Among the problems with TG is how they go out act like complete fools, do horrible things to old brit cars, act in rather rude and silly ways in their road trips. I go to websites based in the UK as brit cars and some there feel Clarkson is the Antichrist.
Still, I suspect that this car will be tested by them as McLaren knows it will get them the attention they want.

Why is that a problem? Those are their assets!
