Myles Brand, Ncaa President Passes Away

Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:35 pm

He passed a couple hours ago, I assume he was either at his home or at Indiana University Medical Center. He was battling cancer. He is probably best known for firing Bobby Knight as head basketball coach at Indiana University Bloomington when Myles Brand was president at Indiana University.

To bad for that because he really pressed for higher scholastic standards for player-atheletes.

RIP

David

Well, unless your sport makes the NCAA boatloads of money that is. Then it's perfectly fine to recruit a functionally illiterate kid from West Ghetto HS, throw him in a joke of a junior college, and when he learns to read he gets a free ride somewhere -- and of course doesn't graduate.

If there is a sports body as money-hungry, elitist, and corrupt than the NCAA outside of the third world, I'd like to know where it is. Besides that, this arrogant windbag decided that schools like UND weren't politically correct enough to participate in the NCAA with their "hostile and abusive" nickname -- unless you happen to be Florida State which brings in massive revenue for the bloated bureaucracy that is the NCAA.

Hopefully, his death will bring on some meaningful change in that pit of an organization.

You raise some valid points about the NCAA to be sure, but FYI: incessant negativity and mean-spiritedness have been shown by research to increase one's risk of premature arterial calcification and heart disease.

Amen. While I do not wish death upon anyone, he was not a great NCAA administrator by any stretch of the imagination.
