Technician Arrested For Killing Of Yale Girl

Thu Sep 17, 2009 2:27 pm

This case has even been on evening news in Japan. What are people saying about it stateside? Typical crime sensationalism in the media aside, the guy's history makes him out to be something of a creep. His live-in girlfriend is apparently a real trooper as she continues to support him. With all the video camera footage and building entry records the cops seem to have, in addition to 250 pieces of physical evidence, it doesn't sound like this guy has much of a chance if he did it.

Yale lab technician was arrested Thursday at a hotel and charged with murdering a graduate student whose body was found stuffed in the wall of a research building on what would have been her wedding day.

Police said it was a case of workplace violence, but didn't elaborate.

I was up at Foxwoods when this happened and it was all over the news. Sure seems like he flipped out and choked her and then panicked and shoved her in the wall. If they have his DNA it's all over for him.

I have heard it's anything from a spurned lover to the fact he didn't like the way she treated the mice he looked after. I think we will know the facts soon.

Way, way, way too much. This has been near the lead story for days now. I feel sorry for the relatives and friends over their loss, but it has gotten way more attention than it deserves.

Well I think there was a lot of intrigue about her disappearance, especially considering the fact the her entering and never leaving is very much a twilight-zone scenario. By the time the press had built that story, it had to run to its natural end. Also, the fact that it's Yale, an ivy-league school, adds a lot more interest to the story.
My question is, did he think he would never be caught, or by the time everything was said and done he knew he was screwed.
Now you're really flying

It's all over the place in the states, especially in the NY tabloids.

I didn't think much of the YDN as an undergrad, but they've really done a great job in covering in the story--diffused a lot of supposed rumors, while being generally on top of stories, and the first out. It's easily been the most accurate source for news relating to the case.

True, there's also the fact that New Haven has a very negative public image, and the Yale-New Haven relationship is pretty commonly used as an example of a poor town-gown relationship.

Car chases, young cute girls getting kidnapped or murdered, plane incidents = viewers

viewers = ratings

ratings = advertising revenue

Sad and scary story, especially for those of us still in college... and the fact that it was so close to her wedding day!

More attention that it deserves? Only covered because it was a "cute young girl"??? Let's get off the high horse of jaded cynicism masquerading as wisdom and think for a minute. This is a TERRIBLE tragedy that deserves every MINUTE of coverage it gets. If you find it tiresome, too bad.

When you compare this with the type of people that dominate our news coverage, this is the exact kind of person who should get this type of attention. Think about the hysteria over that scumbag Michael Jackson. Remember the months of Anna Nicole? Here we have a young woman from pretty humble beginnings making a life for herself with nothing more than the gifts she was born with. Even our rotten tabloid media could not dig up a person who had anything bad to say about her. She was achieving at the highest level, with unlimited potential, and stated dreams that would have done nothing but benefit society as a whole. Again, contrast that with the time wasted covering the rich, spoiled social delinquents in our society. She could be any one of us here, and I wish things like this got more attention that they do.

Then, there's her fiance...five days away from the happiest day in his life, and instead of trying to figure out if his bow tie is straight and checking 100 times to make sure he has the rings, he is learning his wife-to-be's strangled, rotting body is being dug out of a wall because some cretin either had some sort of fixation or couldn't keep his inner control freak under control...big tough guy strangling the life out of a tiny woman that wouldn't weigh 100 lbs. wet with $500 in quarters in her pockets. My God! His life was taken away before it could get started because of mouse turds or lab footwear! Instead of flying with him to their honeymoon, she was flying back to California in a box.

I just really can't get past this one.

My favorite part of the whole story is that this guy somehow ended up with the title of Lab Technician. It's way too official, almost important sounding for what this guy's job actually was. He cleaned the animal cages at the lab. His job was to wipe up rat, mouse, and monkey shit.

From some news stories, he has family that works at Yale or some other situation that gave him connections to the job. He apparently didn't go to college, only has a HS Diploma. One has to wonder if had some serious psychlogical or mental health problems that may have limited his employment or educational opportunites and if so I bet if they will come out in any trial or under continued media looking under the rocks.

This story got a lot of national play due to the location, one that was a relatively secure facility, that was a eductional and work place, at a major and well known university, a young woman about to be married, a person of exceptional intellegance and a future to look foward to. There were also some possibilty of her getting cold feet over getting married and had been a 'runaway bride' as there were some of those in recent years.

So far, the man arrested and charged has kept quiet under advisement of his attorney, a Consitiutional right. I do hope the Proscutitor doesn't overplay the evidence for his/her own political gain or to encourage a confession or do a plea deal so doesn't have to try him but still get justice. Let us also hope they do have the real murderer.

Other than an event that causes mass casualties I really can't think of any story that is more tragic than this one, and I agree the news coverage hasn't been excessive. It is tragic because of the circumstances. From what I can tell from the news stories, she was a real giver and we lost someone that actually did contribute to society. This cannot be said for many to most murders. This is ten times more tragic than the Natalie Halloway story. Natalie made some poor decisions that ultimately led to her untimely demise. Annie died because she went into work on a day that one of her co-workers lost it.

My girlfriend (soon to be fiance) and I have also been touched by the story because our backgrounds are similar to and we are the same age. This story really hit home for us.

Same here, and that's probably a huge part of it for me...too close to home. All of the descriptions of Annie, from the physical, to the personality are very similar...the way we met, etc. Being with my wife all these years, I have seen how certain people in the workplace and at school think a 4'11" Asian girl is someone they can push around or intimidate. I doubt the control freak would have had the courage to "go off" on someone his own size.

This is a good read, for those who still think this isn't worth the coverage.

Thank you for posting that article. One of the most haunting things about this incident, is that she was at work in an extremely secure building--it really degrades your sense of security. And this haunts me especially because my girlfriend and I are long distance at the moment, just like Annie and her fiance.
