Your Greatest Live Sport Moment!

Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:54 pm

Hey everybody, was just wondering if you have attented a sporting event and witnessed something great?

I was at the 2006 German F1 grand prix, Michael Schumachers last home race and seem him win! I always remember it, it was my first grand prix and when he came out onto the track for the first time on Saturday I nearly cried, it was the first time to see my child hood hero doing what he did!

I seem the dramatic end to the 200* Belgian GP and last weekend I seen Lewis Hamilotn hit a wall on the last lap of the Italian GP! All 3 moments were ''electrifying''.

So yours?

Well, as a Stanford grad, this falls more into the category of "infamous" sports moment than "greatest," but I was present (as a Stanford sophomore) at the 1982 Big Game at Berkeley between Stanford and Cal in which "The Play" occurred, i.e., the kick-off return by Cal at the end of the game. The Cal players executed a number of lateral passes and the last Cal player to take the ball ran through the Stanford Band which had run out onto the field as the clock ticked off the last seconds of the game. Of course, wise people know that one of the officials blew the play dead when one of the Cal player's knee hit the turf as the result of contact with a Stanford player, but history records the touchdown as good leading to Cal winning the game. I was at the game, and all I can say is we was robbed!

I can't say I have seen too many sports events live, but one moment I do remember was when the new Sporting stadium was inaugurated in 2003. It was a friendly match against Manchester United, which Sporting ended up winning 3-1. I say it was a great moment because in that game Cristiano Ronaldo (who was still playing for Sporting at that time) so completely and utterly obliterated the Manchester United defense that on the aircraft, on the way back, the Man U players allegedly begged Alex Ferguson to buy Ronaldo (which he had been keeping an eye on for a while). 5 years and countless goals and assists later by Ronaldo, I guess it worked out for them.

Back in 1996, I went to a bullfight in Madrid and during the third bull, the matador actually made the bull do a backflip. That's a *very* rare thing to see.

Game 4 of the 1996 World Series in Atlanta: Jim Leyritz hitting a three-run HR in the 8th. As a Yankees fan going ape-shit, I've never seen so many Braves fans want to hit a 13 year old. Geez, it's hard to think that was 13 years ago!

1996 Olympics: Donovan Bailey wins the 100m and breaks the world record. I'm not Canadian, but it was definitely unbelievable being three rows from the finish line and watching the celebration.

Super Bowl XXXVI: Adam Vinatieri nails the field goal on the last play of the game. I didn't really care for either team as a Giants fan. Definitely a cool moment though, especially since it was the first Super Bowl since 9/11.

Super Bowl XXXVIII: Seeing Janet Jackson's tit. My dad and I were sitting at the 50 yard line in the second row facing the stage. In the first row, there was some rap artist and his crew. When Justin Timberlake ripped off Janet Jackson's top, the rapper turned around to my father and I said, "Did you see that shit!" It was a surreal moment. Oh yeah, Adam Vinatieri...again... hit a field goal with four seconds left.

How could I have forgotten this?

In 1995 my family was in Atlanta looking at houses, I begged my dad to go see the IHL hockey game at The Omni. Of course, he took me, along with his Wall Street Journal so he could pay as little attention to the game as humanly possible. Sir Slap Shot was an inflatable mascot of the Atlanta Knights, and he had habit of running down the aisle behind the visitors bench and launching himself into the glass. Well, the Cincinnati Cyclones coach wasn't thrilled with this and jumped over the boards, and started pummeling the shit out of the mascot. As he was climbing back over the glass to the bench, my old man rolled up his Wall Street Journal and fired it right over the head of the coach. This caused the Cyclones bench to almost jump to their coach's defense, and almost climb over the glass. Oddly enough, we weren't ejected.

However, the next morning, my Dad was getting calls from co-workers saying, "Dude, were you at the Knights game?" Turns out the coach pummeling the mascot was all over Sportscenter and Headline News and you also caught a glimpse of my old man firing the Wall Street Journal at the coach (and me to the side).

Very simple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkZL80tTGlo

"My team" (at that time 2nd division) beat the other team from the same city (first division) 4:2 in a cup match.

You can even see me in that clip, I'm in the stands wearing a bright yellow raincoat. To this day, I say this was the best team TeBe ever had... ah, the memories of that year!

Nothing too miraculous for me, I saw Jagr score a hat trick for the penguins against the panthers about 8 years ago or so, and I've also witnessed the first wins of Robert Kubica and Lewis Hamilton in Canada for the F1 race, along with a few epic Michael Schumacher wins, who was and is my favorite driver racing for my favorite team. The Kubica win was particularly interesting because I sit right where he'd had his insane 170mph accident in Montreal in 2007, which was a very frightening thing to see in person, everyone in my grandstand assumed he was badly injured if not dead yet he managed to escape with a mild concussion.

There is Mika Hakkinen winning his first F1 World Championship, Finland beating Sweden in 1995 at the WC Icehockey on swedish soil, Herman Maier´s crash in Nagano, Usain Bolt running the new WR´s, Rapid Vienna beating the HSV a few days ago 3:0, Germany winning the Basketball EC in the 90´s, Schalke loosing the German Bundesliga last minute Big grin  duck  Big grin

I saw the '99 Rugby World Cup Semifinal at Twickenham between New Zealand and France. Regarded as the greatest game in rugby world cup history.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugb...ugby_world_cup/history/2966114.stm

My family knew some locals who were able to get us tickets the day before so it was a very last minute thing. When I went back to school on Monday morning everyone was talking about how amazing the game was, not many believed me when I said I was there.

One of the best for me was watching my brother win at the Henley Royal Regatta a few years ago (in addition to the National Schools Regatta a few weeks before) and a friend of the family captained the Cambridge rugby team in the Varsity match at Twickenham.

A few that stand out for me

Was watching from just behind the end zone at the Seahawks/Cowboys playoff game when Romo flubbed the snap on what would have been the game-winning field goal. The memory of all of us total strangers screaming, high-fiving and hugging each other was something I'll never forget.

At the 2001 All Star game, seeing Cal Ripkin hit a homer was just a story-book ending to a great career.

And best of all, was at Soldier Field in Chicago when Walter Payton passed Jim Brown for the career rushing title. Yeah, I know that Emmit Smith has since passed Sweetness, but I still consider him the best ever (ahh, but that's a debate for another thread)

2003 NBA Finals Game 6, Spurs beat Nets to clinch second NBA title.
2007 NBA Finals Game 7, Spurs beat Pistons to clinch third NBA title.

One that I missed out on was when Emmitt Smith became the all time NFL rushing leader.
The Cowboys played the Seahawks that day, and I had planned on making the trip, but other things got in the way. Would have been cool to be there, but I saw it on TV, and the Seahawks won the game anyway.

The year Norwich city made it to the play-offs, I went to see the home leg that we won 3-1. I also went away to Wolves with my farther in law, we were in the lower section of one of the side stands with opposition fans above us. I have never experienced such a hostile atmosphere in all my life. 0-0 at half time, then Wolves scored half way through the second half. The wolves fans notched up the atmosphere, and that was the longest 20 minutes of my life. Then the 4th official indicated 5 minutes of extra time from nowhere, and it just got worse. At the final whistle, the sense of relief was immense.

It was an amazing night, incredible atmosphere and a fantastic result. I aged 20 years in 20 minutes. Compared to that, the final was poor, and we lost.

Hopefully you saved your ticket stub!

In my first two years of undergrad, I was lucky that both Harvard/Yale games were memorable (even if the blue lost both)
Freshman year, I witnessed the infamous "We Suck" card stunt--where a bunch of yale kids fooled some unsuspecting Harvard fans into raising various placards that spelled out "we suck." (They actually didn't--that year they beat us 35-3 and went undefeated)
www.harvardsucks.org has the video

My sophomore year was the longest game in ivy league history. We hadn't beaten Harvard in five years (the longest streak ever at the time), and were up 21-7 midway through the third quarter at home. Still being naive to the nature of Yale football (which could give oklahoma a run for its money in choking in big games) I actually thought the streak would be over. Harvard mounted a comeback, and the game ended tied at 24-24. With daylight rapidly fading and the shadows of the yale bowl stands nearly encompassing the entire field (and no lights at the Yale Bowl to facilitate a night game), a sloppy, three-ot period ended with Harvard's running back punching it in, and beating us.

I once saw an 8-year old kid burn an ant-hill down with a magnifying glass. It was pretty sweet to see all the ants running around on fire in a pointless battle against death. Two of the ants made it out alive, though, which made it very sporting.

Texas beats "the greatest team ever" in the 2006 Rose Bowl, the National Championship game, in what is arguably the most hyped college football game ever.

I was in the corner where this occurred: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8zZRBTOcnY

Honorable Mentions:

2005 Rose Bowl: Dusty Mangum's 37 yard field goal as time expired to win Texas' first ever BCS bowl game, as well as it's first ever meeting with Michigan.

2009 Fiesta Bowl: Colt McCoy leads Texas down the field to beat Ohio State.

Hook'em!

I guess the greatest moment in sports I ever witnessed was probably Univ. of Texas pitcher Adrian Alaniz's no-hitter against Oklahoma in 2005. I'm not really a Texas fan, but I think to say that you saw a no-hitter, in general, is pretty cool. Seeing a walk-off homer earlier this year was pretty cool too.

Another one was when I was at a Avalanche @ Blackhawks game in 2004 where the Hawks jumped to like a 4-1 or 4-2 lead in the 3rd, Colorado tied it and I think Forsberg scored in OT to win. It was just a regular season game but cool nonetheless.

I went to the ASU-LSU football game in November 2005.

For those who may not remember, it was LSU's first game after Hurricane Katrina.

Yes, LSU came from behind to win the game.

But the greatest moment is when, after the final whistle blew, the sold out crowd of 90% Sun Devil fans (myself included) gave them a 5 minute standing ovation. After witnessing some of the worst human behaviors possible for the previous 4 years, it restored a lot of my shattered hope in humanity.

Phillies @ Mets August 23rd. I thought Lidge (pitcher) was going to blow another save, then Eric Bruntlett caught a line-drive at 2nd with both runners going for the first game ending unassisted triple play ever. It's one of those things that's 99% luck, but pretty amazing to see anyway.

Three moments for me;

Schumi winning the Argentine GP in 96 (or was it 97? can't be bothered to google it up lol),
Being at the Amsterdam arena for the champions league final in 98, and seeing River Plate win the Libertadores in 1996.

And overall, this time watching it on tv, I'd say Italy winning the 2006 WC

(yes, I know there's a mix of Italy, Spain and Argentina, but I'm Italian, lived in Spain many years, and been living in Argentina for the past 18  Smile )

Dubbed the 'New Firm' by Danish media, games between my team (Brøndby IF) and FC Copenhagen are usually the highlight of the season, as it's usually either of the two teams that end up winning the Danish league. My team had entered the winter break (lasts 4 months) with no less than a 19 point lead to our closest rivals, FCK, and a lot of bookmakers had already made the payouts to players who had betted on us winning the league. However, once again we had an absolutely disastrous spring season, allowing FCK to gain 16 points on us by the time we met in the 5th to last game of the season. Everyone had expected us to choke and, once again, hand the trophy to FCK (which we had done the previous season, where we dropped a 7 point lead during the spring season). The team didn't, and by winning that game and the next one (against one the delegated teams) 7-0, we secured the trophy Big grin

1. Niki Lauda winning his very last race in a Ferrari was the first GP I´ve seen (Zandvoort/Netherlands). When I was a boy I was a big Lauda fan.

2. Being a marshal at the 1982 German GP and seeing a Ferrari winning the race after the desaster in practice when the championship leader Pironi crashed so badly it ended his career and cost him the title (Rosberg became the lucky opportunist champion that year).

3. Attending the 1998 and 1999 German GPs as a free champaign-drinking "VIP" in the Paddock-club together with real VIPs. Sitting directly above the Ferrari Box. Sadly I was not quick enough to get a picture of Boris Becker falling down the stairs of the Ferrari motorhome. That would have been a frontpage photo back then! And a funny moment was that after I passed the controls Ralf Schuhmacher was denied entrance because he didnt wear his lanyards and the guard didnt recognize him!

A few:

I was at the World Cup final in Rome in 1990 and saw the first and second ever sendings off in a final.

A few days earlier I was at the England v. West Germany semi-final when Paul Gascoigne (bless him) cried at being booked and becoming ineligible for the final.

Champions League final at Hampden Park in 2002 when Zinedine Zidane scored one of the greatest goals ever.

My personal favourite: being at the City of Manchester Stadium two years ago to watch Rangers in the UEFA Cup final. Yes, they lost, but everyone, including most Rangers fans, had expected them to go out at each stage.

I also saw Pele in one of his later matches for Santos against a Hong Kong Select in about 1971. He scored twice, both from penalties.

I'm a big fan of North American Junior "A" hockey. (16-20 year olds)
I've had the priviledge for watching the title game for the North American championship (The Memorial Cup) on three occasions.
In 1986, The title game was hosted here in PDX between the Guelph Platers and the Hull Olympiqes. (Guelph won a mostly unexciting match)
In 1992, we travelled to SEA to watch the title game between the Kamloops Blazers and the Sault St Marie Greyhounds. This game went like a movie script : With less than twenty seconds left in a tie game, one of the Kamloops' players received stick to the mid section and as he was replaced by another player from the bench, that player went in on a clean breakaway and scored the game (championship) winner with less than five seconds left in the match. Exciting!
In 1998, my beloved Portland Winterhawks played the team from Guelph (they had changed their mascot from the Platers to the Storm) in Spokane, WA and their championship match went to sudden death overtime. After many spirited scoring drives by both teams, the 'Hawks got the winner. My brother in law and I threw our arms around eachother and started jumping up and down. His wife tried to join us in the group hug and got clobbered in the mouth for her efforts! What a great moment!
I've got Titanic hopes and they aren't sinking

My memorable sporting moment didn't get any media coverage, but I'll remember it for a long time. It was the men's 5000m run at the Sydney 2000 paralympics. From the start, there was one competitor who obviously wasn't going to win, but was getting a huge amount of encouragement from the crowd. He started running off the track, around the outside to acknowledge the crowd but eventually an official stepped in and tried to disqualify him for running off the track. After plenty of jeering from the crowd he was allowed to finish and got a bouquet of flowers and a standing ovation.

Other memorable live moments have been Cathy Freeman's gold in 2000 and several world records by Ian Thorpe

A few years ago when living in VA Beach, couple friends and I drove to D.C to see Alfonso Soriano and the Nationals. Even though, he was 1 for 4 that night, he belt a solo shot to left-center in the 8th for the game winner. Nationals beat the N.Y. Mets 1-0 that day. Pretty boring, huh?

The Shawn Bates Penalty Shot for the Isles vs. the leafs back in April of 2002. It was a crazy back and forth series with a lot of bad blood. Afyer he scored with a few min left to go in the 3rd, the Nassau Coliseum erupted like it did back in the Glory days of the 80's

I have attended the 1991 French GP and I saw Senna, Prost, Mansell and Co. This was well my first GP and this was a great moment.

But the event that would have the greatest impact on my sports-fan life is the first time I have attended the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988. There were the fatest cars in the history of motorspors running in front of my 9 year-old kids' eyes. Unforgettable.

Too many to pick one ,,,,, how about personal glory day's !

My son picked up a fumble last night in his high-school football game , his team then drove down the field and scored. Nothing is better than when one of your kids is the hero ..nothing.

I had a triple play with bases loaded , playing second base on my high-school baseball team. It just happened so fast ... it was a moment that I will never forget.

I also threw a touchdown pass and ran in a touchdown against our rivals playing high-school football. We lost the game , and I was not a very good QB ...but hey I made some memories. I also got sacked 11 times in one game that year ....  fight

Although there have been many over my lifetime, especially in futbol.

The one that i can recall in recent memory was 2 seasons ago when Favre threw that 80 yard TD pass on the first play of overtime against the Broncos.

It was so effin awesome.

Senna would always DNF in France. I think Paul Ricard and Magny-Cours are one of the few tracks that were used in his time where he never won.

Well when I was 8 I was at Game 7 of the 1997 World Series Marlins win in the bottom of the 7th to win the world series I went to a lot of Marlins playoff games that year.
Game 5 of the NBA Finals in 2006 Dwayne Wade hits free throws to win the game.
Game 6 of NBA Eastern Conference Finals Heat get into the NBA finals for the first time.

But the best for me has to be Game 4 of the 2003 World Series. Marlins win the bottom of the 12th Inning after a home run from Alex Gonzalez which just got above the fence and stayed fair. What a great game and finish that was!

EZEIZA, I believe that was the 1998 Argentine GP? Remember he knocked Coulthard out of the way?, and then had an off as it started to rain 2-3 laps from the end?

I think Hill won in 1996 and Schumi crashed at the first corner in 1997!

DNF, not this time. He finished third during this GP (Mansell 1st and Prost 2nd).

But he indeed never won on the French soil.

correct. In the last turn of the last lap he almost lost the race but managed to get out of the gravel. From where I was standing it made it even more exciting, because all we could see from that part of track was the water spray, and suddenly there was none!!! We also had no screens to follow the race, so we were all listening to the radio. Amazing!  Smile

correct as well. In 97 then it was when after Schumi's crash, the race was still very interesting because of the Villeneuve-Irvine fight for the first spot, with Jaques winning at the end. Exciting race!
