Roman Abramovich Eclipse Has Antiphoto Laser Shiel

Tue Sep 22, 2009 5:28 pm

hmmm... I wonder if the man will bring his new toy to the Monaco Yacht Show this week?
http://www.monacoyachtshow.com/index.shtml

The Eclipse will attempt to repel paparazzi with a laser system that is said to "detect CCDs" (we suspect they mean it detects the autofocus light), and responds with an intense beam of light that precludes unwanted photography.

Roman Abramovich zaps snappers with laser shield
...
Mindful of a rise in piracy on the high seas, the yacht has a hull and windows capable of withstanding a missile attack and a mini-submarine for emergencies. Once it leaves the Blohm + Voss German shipyard, it will be fitted with a missile defence system in France.

Not sure if those count since they're technically owned by the state, not a private individual.

You know, I seem to remember a saying:

Perhaps this has some relevance?

Even funnier, you will solve the problem with a worse mousetrap. CCDs are only present in digital cameras, so all the paparazzi need to do is go back to film (if someone is still making it, that is).
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Where does Waleed-bin-Talal's jet fit in the state/private debate?

I understand his B747 flies under the Saudi royalty colors, so that is state. However, Guiness certifies it as the largest private jet in the world.

His A380 is not yet flying, and I expect Abramovich to have an A380 at near the same time.

The Fry's 747SP is not state owned, unless we aren't counting corporations either.

I just don't get this, or someone's spinning something. In daylight the autofocus is by contrast of the image and the camera doesn't emit anything. Any autofocus light is for objects fairly close to the camera, in the dark, and is red and is easily visible in low light. I can't see any pap standing in the trees with a red light giving the game away.

And you can use manual focus anyway.

So unless Roman Abramovich is planning to fire laser beams into the camera, in which case he may be guilty of blinding photographers, I can't see how this'll work.... whatever "this" is.

And in any case, most professional cameras use a CMOS sensor anyway, not a CCD...

Could this 'laser shield', if it exists, cause people eye damage...

If it makes the rich buy things they don't need then so be it Big grin well at least if they are too obsessed with having so much money and having the best of everything without thinking....then maybe thats good for the ship builders and keeps the economy going I guess Big grin
I wonder if they can invent a special lense on the camera...  Smile

I'm going to be a pap and just draw a pic of them on paper instead Big grin

This is a really good idea! I will have to do my own Eclipse when they come to Monaco. There is no way their laser beams are going to nag me.  laughing

Talking about mega-rich people's toys I happened to spot the Phocea yesterday at Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. This mega-sailing yacht is owned by Mouna Ayoub, ex-wife of Saudi billionaire Nacer Al Rashid, permanent resident in Monaco, personal friend and financier of Saudi King Fahd Ben Abdel Aziz Al-Saoud.

Nacer Al Rashid has got his own mega-yacht the Lady Moura which moored in Monaco a great most of the year.

Good for Roman, I'd be more concerned with piracy than paparazzi if he sails into the Indian Ocean. His yacht may be long but it sure is ugly. Looks like a mini cruise ship really. For the piracy problem I'd just have 2 50-caliber machine guns on deck and a ~40-knot top speed would be useful.

This is a private aircraft not a state aircraft. The insignia are that of his own company, the Kingdom Holding Company not the KSA flag. Al-Waleed bin-Talal al-Saud is not a member of the ruling elite of KSA (nor was his father who was a bit of a black sheep). House of Saud has ~7000 members, only a handful of the older brothers actually rule.
