Question For Volvo XC60 Owners

Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:49 pm

Hi guys!
My father owns a Honda CR-V and is seriously thinking about replacing it with a Volvo XC60. I am very excited as I find the XC60 a great vehicle.
But, on a recent visit to a Mercedes-Benz dealer, my father was almost convinced my that the GLK350 is a better car. Here in Brazil, the GLK is more expensive than the Volvo and I honestly don´t think it is as good and as beautiful as the Swedish car. I decided that I should convince him to take the Volvo, even though I have never driven one of these.
So, I´m here to ask XC60 owners (hope I find some here!), your reviews on this SUV, pointing the good and the bad things about it.
I´m really in love with it.  cloudnine

Rgs!

I myself own a CR-V and am quite surprised that your father would think of trading it in as it is an AMAZING vehicle IMO... But I'm sure he has his reasons so I won't pester...  Wink

If I had to recommend a car I would definitely recommend the Volvo over the Mercedes... As far as the "beautiful" aspect, the XC60 looks more like an XC90 that got botox injections in the front to almost make it look like a Mazda...  Smile
My aunt recently traded in her old '98 Volvo station wagon and got a new XC60 in Bronze and it looks AMAZING! It runs soooooooooo smooth and quiet. You get the reliability of the Volvo name at a cheaper price than you would get if you bought the Mercedes GLK which are generally known for their low reliability and expensive repair costs (though Volvo isn't exactly cheap to repair either). Though the one thing that both vehicles seem to share is the fact that both are extremely safe vehicles. Good luck and I hope your dad makes the right choice...  Smile

Volvo quality is hit and miss. I have had 2 of them - one ran like a dream and the other one was assembled by the devil himself. The recent ones have gotten a bit better, but they tend to have electrical "issues." However, Volvo seats are - bar none - the most comfortable you can find and their recent interiors are great. The anecdotal evidence I have heard from others suggests that the Volvos made in Gothenburg are more reliable than those that come from Ghent.

The CR-V is indeed a great car. It was decided yesterday that it will stay with my mother and her Chevrolet Zafira (an awful car IMHO) will be replaced by an SUV instead.

On a quick google search I found that the XC60 is assembled in Ghent. Is it really that difference?
Our last Volvo was a 850 T5-R SW, in 1995. One of the greatest cars we've ever had.

I agree, Volvo's seats are by far the most comfortable I have come across. One other thing to remember though is resale value, the Mercedes should be quite a bit better in this regard.

I haven't even been on one yet, but I've heard nothing but rave reviews about it. OTOH I haven't heard too many good things about the MB.

Another one you may want to look at is the Audi Q5. You can't beat Audi's attention to detail. Heard good things about it too.

Not sure if the experience can be translated to the smaller versions, but I have an XC90. I have driven BMW X5, Mercedes M series, Audi A7... there is no comparison...
The comfort, design and drivability of the XC90 wins every time. The interior is so cleverly designed and the space is only amazing.

We, for sure, have seen the Audi. But here it is a LOT more expensive than the Volvo or the GLK350. The difference should be around R$110.000,00 ~ US$60.000,00 between the XC60 Top and the Q5 3.2 V6. Way too much.

This is the major reason why my father is thinking about the GLK more seriously.

The XC60 is better looking IMO than the GLK but the GLK is a much much nicer SUV to drive, especially if you are a press on type driver.

I've a neighbour who, in the last 12 months, has had the XC70, XC90 and XC60 (he sells Harleys but they also have a Volvo dealership). His favourite of the three was the XC90 - not very impressed with the XC60...

Another neighbour has a GL - it's recently been in the shop for around a month for major work, huge truck that it is....it must be almost twice the size of the XC60?

Was in for the GLK 350 & Q5.... ended up with the GLK, after 6 months I still love it and no issues so far have about 6'400k on it, use about 9.5 -10.5 L combined driving, has a superb 7 speed transmission and for some reason if I drive in "sport" mode I get better fuel millage  Smile, has all the safety stuff medium loaded and the price just awesome  Big grin and last but not least it is made in Bremen..... and after talking to other GLK owners it appears the MB employees at the Bremen factory are doing a super job getting these GLK's made.

We are are on the market right now for a vehicle in this segment.

The 60 and 90 are both options on the table.

My cousin who lives nearby has the 90 and raved about it. Her family just got the 60 as well and lets her teenager drive the 90. They rave about both.

So was my mom in law..... she was very happy with her Volvo, however the maintenance cost was high (always dealer serviced)..... she has now a MB since 07 and based on the service cost from both cars the MB cost her less..... based on dealer service cost paid by her... she also gets a free B class car for the day....  Smile. So I guess "you" have to look at the whole picture and your local dealer plays a key role...in it, price/service/cost wise.

I am sure mom in law still would drive her Volvo today but a 10 tonne truck drove over her Volvo's hood/front section while she made a left turn.....

I'd roll the GLK. I wasn't very impressed with the GLK when I drove it. Do you have the Audi Q5 in Brasil?

I did not drive it, but I had the impression that it has a low quality interior, if compared to other MB cars.
And still, its exterior doesn´t look good at all IMHO.

Same in Canada, Audi just wanted way too much for it and I was not impressed with the leather quality....

Well, the GLK is based on the new c class.... I actually like the interior style, fit & finish... as I am not a fan of all the fancy stuff, however agree there is a chance people will take it as low quality.... but it is not.... but hey the GLK gives you a lot for the money.... with reasonable cost to maintain it......

RE: Question For Volvo XC60 Owners

Fri Oct 02, 2009 9:02 pm

I own two Volvos... a 2008 S40 T5 and a 1998 V70XC Cross Country AWD. Both were made at the Ghent plant in Belgium.

Honestly I can say that both of them are mechanically very sound and run very well.. The S40 has 35,000 miles on it and the only things I've had done are normal scheduled mx and the drivers seat had a faulty lumbar assembly that failed and had to be replaced. Otherwise, the car runs like a dream and I absolutely love it. the V70XC has 151,000 miles on it and I am the 3rd owner. The car has the same 5cyl inline turbo that my S40 has. Turbo still works, motor still pulls strong, and the AWD still works. This year was the last of the "real" Volvos.. 99 and up is when Ford started injecting their say (and their parts).... You pull apart my car and find the little FORD oval stamped all over the underside of panels, switches, parts, etc.. This wagon is a beast, with the beefy Cross Country suspension, bigger tires, AWD, etc... It just feels solid and robust.

The late 90s and early 2000's are when Volvo went through a "dark" period, when Ford's ideas and parts and platforms were integrated. I've noticed that from 2008 on up, the cars have become much more refined. One place you really have to watch on Volvos is the small details... The switches, knobs, small panels, etc... These tend to break. Otherwise, mechanically, theyre quite good. Also, if youre buying the car, you have to be in it for the long run. Volvos are very reliable but suffer from complex and expensive problems if they arent cared for properly. Do your mx on time, every time, and your Volvo will run to 300,000 miles or more! My S40 just went in for the 30,000 mile service and just cost me 400 USD... That's just for a normal service every 30k miles.

I know what you mean! I had a 1995 940 (made in Gothenburg) which ran wonderfully and very reliably even with a rather small V4 for such a large car. The S70 though had problem after problem - electrical, brakes...

How do you like your S40? I've started looking at Volvos again and find myself drawn to the S40 and S80 (totally different sizes of course, but just dont want the old S60).

I love my S40. Volvos are just something that you either have in your blood or you don't. The S40 has been problem free since its purchase (except that defective lumbar unit). Although the car looks small on the outside by US standards, the inside is surprisingly roomy. I live in JAX and have taken road trips to MCO with 3 other friends and nobody has complained about a lack of room in the car. I have always loved the way Volvos look, especially the new design DNA (S40, S60, S80 etc). My favorite Volvo style of all time is the S70/V70. I have heard from others like yourself about the S70s being just hell to take care of. I luckily have not had huge problems with the V70 I own except for little random things like a new right front spring seat, burned out light bulbs, slight oil seeps (not leaks) and a small power steering seep (NOT leak Big grin ). She makes a few odd squeaks, rattles, and weird noises, but keeps going just fine.

I'd go for a Volvo over a Benz or especially an Audi. I have a 2003 S80 T6 and it runs like champ. My only expensive repair has been the power steering pump failed. It is a fun car to drive and I'll probably always have a Volvo in the garage. I've known at least 4 people that have had Audis, and all of them have said not to own one longer than 4 years. Audi's have always had electrical issues.

Thank you very much for the replies guys. I´m pretty much convinced that Volvo will be the right choice!
Having said that, if my father decides to get another car, I´ll try to replace my 2006 Ford Fusion and my 2007 Peugeot 206SW with a Volvo. If it happens, it'll be my own 2010 Christmas gift! hehe
I still hope that my dad gets the XC60. He is in LA for work now and when he comes back, he'll probably decide.
