And Today's Blinding Flash Of The Obvious Is...

Quote:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Department of Homeland Security and FBI have issued security bulletins to raise awareness regarding "terrorist interest" in attacking sports and entertainment venues as well as luxury hotels.

The bulletins, which were sent to law enforcement Monday, said that authorities did not know of any credible or specific terrorist plots to attack U.S. stadiums, arenas or luxury hotels.

Did my tax dollars just get spent on that? Is this like the study where they proved that dropping sheep off cliffs tends to kill them?

Can you understand a difference between, "Say, we should look into killing some Americans when they are gathered in a big crowd at a sporting event" , and, ""OK, so the plan is set... We will drive three rented trucks into the Rose Bowl at 12:15 and detonate them in the concourse while our plane pulling a banner saying "Die Infidels!" is overhead."?
One of these is "specific", the other is just "interest".
Besides, they may know more than they are saying, no?

Whilst I acknowledge the difficult path the authorities must tread between "crying wolf" and not warning of real threats it is easy to wonder sometimes if "regarding "terrorist interest" might actually create terrorist interest.

I think this is more a case of a slow news day than anything else. TFRs have been issued for major outdoor events for almost 8 years now, and security screening started at stadiums before the London Tube bombings. Hotels are soft targets, but that is nothing new. They have been targets for decades. They US is one of the few places I go where I don't see a significant security presence in the mid-range and better hotels.

Yes, and they are just giving a warning about "interest." Well, let's see. The terrorists haven't hit a stadium yet, but I think we all knew they were interested in that. And they HAVE hit at least one luxury hotel that comes to mind, so I think we all knew they were interested in that.

Since the report admits that this report acknowledges no "specific" threat, I consider it a waste of time and fearmongering by the DHS to prove why its bureaucracy needs to continue to exist.

The thread title was also my initial reaction to reading this story and was followed by a palm to my face.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught this.

Maybe because they are actually doing their jobs, and idk, preventing attacks. Just a thought...

Yeah, the last few times I went to an NFL game, they make everyone open up their bags and backpacks and they look inside before they let you in the stadium. I have to believe they'd know a bomb when they saw one (at least I hope so - going to a game this weekend).

I'm getting at the FBI, etc stopping a terrorist before it even gets that far.

You'd be surprised how quickly people forget how vigilant they have to be these days. These bullitens usually serve as a reminder and refresher on procedures in certian times when they are needed the most. Given that the annual UN summit is being held, various sports seasons are getting underway, and final Olympic preperations, which are not exclusive to Canada, are being made, this is one of those times.
No matter how random things may appear, there's always a plan.
