Drunk On Antibacterial Gel

Thu Sep 24, 2009 4:13 pm

It's got alcohol in it and someone, somewhere, will consume it. Safer than meths perhaps.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/8272799.stm

A Dorset prison has removed anti-bacterial hand gel pumps after an inmate is thought to have got drunk drinking from them.

The gel was made available on Monday at HMP The Verne in Portland to help combat the spread of swine flu.

But the Prison Officers Association (POA) said within hours there had been an incident with an intoxicated inmate.

In March, Royal Bournemouth Hospital said it was one of many hospitals removing alcohol-based hand cleaning gel from reception areas in a bid to stop visitors drinking it.

Yep, I've known about this for years. When I was working in the prison system, we learned that inmates were adding something to the gel, salt I think, to make it more palatable.

The gel quickly became contraband and even the medical department didn't have it.
I lift things up and put them down.

OK, these gels have been shown to be superior to soap and water in their antibacterial effects. My last hospital's recommendation was that we wash our hands with soap and water:
1) After using the gel 3 times
2) If visibly soiled

Otherwise, we were asked to use the gel, as it is superior to soap and water.

I guess that in a prison it's one thing, but in general, I am opposed to eliminating something beneficial just because someone is misusing it. Especially if their misuse doesn't really endanger anyone else.

I take it you buy Asda's hand gel too. I love the smell, it's great, give's me a very slight high at work when I 'wash' my hands with it, lol.

We just had the gel pumps installed at my work.
It's a good thing, since i have to deal with a lot of different people everyday.

But i must admit that the thought of how a gel/orangejuice-drink would taste have crossed my mind more than once....

Nope, but when I run out I will grab some. Mate owns a reptile store and gave me some hand wash with his logo on it.

Our office did this as well. Don't they realise that whilst good that improving hygene, anti-bacterial products will have no effect on a virus like swine flu?!

So you're sitting there at your work desk and passengers start wondering why they can smell booze...

Could be worse, I suppose... it could smell of Malibu!

Drinking anti-bacterial hand wash gel sounds disgusting enough, but adding salt just sounds rank beyond belief!

I was dropping off a guy at the hospital a few months ago...Like all hospitals here as you enter/leave emergency there are 4 or 5 Purel (a brand) dispensers....As I was leaving there was a homeless guy standing there working the dispenser into his hand and when his hand was full he would drink it..then fill it again........
I pointed it out but he heard me and left....

I have seen people drink a lot of shit but this stuff is the most disgusting.

I work in a germ-a-phobe office, and about half of the people have Purel handpumps at their desk. A couple of times when I've shown up hungover on a Friday, and I catch a whiff of that crap, my first thought is alarmingly, "Oh shit! I smell like booze."

It's absolutely amazing though the people who use that crap are the people who are missing days and days of work because of sickness. IMO the anti-bacterial craze in a place like an office is absolute idiocy. You're killing your immune systems!

Well, gels like Purel are not the old style of anti-bacterial which consisted of the super-antibiotic and dangerous Triclosan. They are simply quickly dissolving alcohol gels, which will kill a virus.

Ah, so it's the alcohol that's the active ingredient, not the antibiotic. Thanks for clearing that up for me  Smile

No antibiotics generally in the stuff. Well, except plain old alcohol, which will kill just about anything in enough quantity.

Wow, I thought the stuff in this was methyl alcohol (meths in the UK as the OP said) which is very toxic. I guess it must be ethyl alcohol. Sad.

Looking at one company's blurb it's 70%w/w denatured ethanol - so ethanol with additives to make it unpalatable, though not unpalatable enough for the mad or desperate it would seem.

http://www.spirigel.co.uk/products.html

According to the wiki, British regulations dictate that denatured alcohol should be prepared thus

Completely denatured alcohol must be made in accordance with the following formulation: with every 90 parts by volume of alcohol mix 9.5 parts by volume of wood naphtha or a substitute for wood naphtha and 0.5 parts by volume of crude pyridine, and to the resulting mixture add mineral naphtha (petroleum oil) in the proportion of 3.75 litres to every 1000 litres of the mixture and synthetic organic dyestuff (methyl violet) in the proportion of 1.5 grams to every 1000 litres of the mixture.
