Facebook Pulls "Kill Obama" Poll

Mon Sep 28, 2009 11:55 pm

For those of you who still think that the threats are no big deal and are being exaggerated by the media, maybe this will change your mind. Or you wouldn't care until someone actually takes a shot at him.

Is it me or is it that we never saw threats like this to Bush this publicized. people might take it as a joke now, but the more it happens, the more one of these idiots will decide that they want to try it.

This isn't a joke. Even though who are critical towards, or outright hate Obama, should know that such polls are not only in bad taste, but also disrespectful towards the person and his family. You may like or hate Obama, but if you have common sense, you wouldn't make such dumb polls.

As a Republican, I have to agree. The poll was tasteless in every single way, but I am not a bit surprised that there would be an application like this in Facebook.

If people have problems with the current administration, there are differnet ways to protest. Doing a poll like this is just plain dumb. Hopefully those who created this poll gets prosecuted in every form of the law.

Well.. it will be an easy investigation as there is a direct link to whoever posted it.

This is not a real threat or being treated as one. Just some idiot that has no idea what they did as a joke is VERY illegal and has put them in a world of sh*t. Yes, it warrants the attention of the Secret Service, but you will not see the SRT Team take this one down.

Of course not, "Death of a President" was all about a "fictional" President and any similarity to President Bush was completely accidental and unintentional.

And of course no talk show entertainers ever said anything remotely like that about President Bush right?

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/edi...06/09/10/a_new_low_in_bush_hatred/

On Air America, talk show host Randi Rhodes recommended doing to Bush what Michael Corleone, in ''The Godfather, Part II," does to his brother. ''Like Fredo," she said, ''somebody ought to take him out fishing and phuw!" -- then imitated the sound of a gunshot. In the Guardian, a leading British daily, columnist Charlie Brooker issued a plea: ''John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr. -- where are you now that we need you?"

It is being treated as a very serious threat by the Secret Service and I guarantee that the person who made the poll might be getting a visit from the Secret Service or may be investigated.

Ok fine. Still we never saw all these threats against Bush less than a year in office. To me, that is completely different than the threats he recieved or something said on radio after about 6-8 years in the white house. At least admit to that.

No. It's exactly the same kind of shit. Until people stop thinking in terms of political ideology and return to some semblence of sanity, we're going to continue seeing more of this kind BS. A threat to the POTUS is a threat to the POTUS.

I'll have to look around some more after work. Considering that most people on the left did not even consider him to legally be in office it would seem strange if someone didn't suggest it.

Defend what? The comparison? If you are saying defend the poll then you are completely wrong as I made clear in the last line of my post. It is always wrong and should never be tolerated. Don't think I could get much more clear than that.

I think the issue with "Death of a President" is just that the film displays a "what if,..." scenario, because it doesn't actually call for President Bush to be assassinated. It's simply something hypothetical, nothing more and nothing less.

There was a similar documentary once on German public station ZDF, but it was about a what if situation on what could have happened, if the hardliners in Moscow had gotten fed up with Gorbachev and his policies on Perestroika and Glasnost in 1989. That documentary showed that in this hypothetical situation, if Gorbachev was removed from power, it would have made the Cold War go red hot, with the DDR starting to really crack down on the freedom movements, (West-) Germany getting invaded by the Russians, and a sea battle, where the Russians blockaded the entry into Europe to the Americans. The film ends with Germany prevailing (of course with the help of the allies), the Western invasion of an eventually defeated DDR, and the Russians going insane and launching a nuclear ICBM on Washington. At the same time, the narrator said "Thank god things turned out different", and it showed what actually happened, with the peaceful revolution in the DDR, and Germans celebrating the fall of this abomination named the Berlin Wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

I saw that documentary on Youtube, and there was even a discussion being held on the subject after the documentary ended during its original broadcast.

I wouldn't necessarily call this a big deal. Whoever put this up is disgusting, as is anyone who voted "yes" on it, but if someone is stupid enough to put a threat up on Facebook, chances are they're not bright enough to pull something like this off.

"Death of a President" was not a threat, nor was it advocating any violence against Bush.

This is a ridiculous poll and in totally unacceptable taste.

There should only be a poll about whether he should have shoes thrown at him - and the answer to that, of course, is no.  duck

Note: Still waiting for the development of a shoe throwing smilie......

Good.
It's stupid, tasteless, and against the law (threatening the life of POTUS). I'm not in favor of prison time for whoever did it, simply because I think it was probably some idiot kid or somebody else, evidently lacking a couple of brain cells, who had no intention of following through on their actions.
Instead, I hope the Secret Service shakes the person down with an intimidating interrogation session, just to put the fear of god into them, and calls for community service time instead.

So when would it be acceptable to threaten him? Just wondering when I could or should stop showing outrage at some idiot threatening ANY US President.

The poll was tasteless, unacceptable and illegal. Will the person who put it up do time? No. He (or she) will be investigated and forever has a little asterick next to his name. Will we ever hear about this particular poll and pollster again? No. Because after the intial 'newsworthiness' has worn off, it really isn't news.

This poll was stupid no matter what, and if it advocated the murder of our US president then it was criminal. Threatening the president of the US is and ought to be illegal. It's the highest elected office in the land and representative of the will of the people.....the only legitimate removal of a President is through elections, term limits or other legal means (if incapacitated).

Did it advocate murder or simply take a poll?

Either way, it was stupid and counterproductive to any rational discourse. Zealots on either side of the political spectrum who cannot argue their points will always seek attention by being idiots.

I can't really see it as a threat. There's no plan or anything detailing an assasination. It's just a poll. A stupid poll but a poll nonetheless. It doesn't say "I'm going to kill Obama" or "Let's group together and kill Obama".

It's inappropriate to sow thoughts of assassination, most people on this earth grasp that concept. It's also offensive.
