Self-Gloss: I'm Doing The AT-SAT Test!

Tue Sep 29, 2009 12:16 am

So I applied for an ATC job a while back in June and never heard back from the FAA, until now. I got the email from the FAA today saying they want me to get my butt out to CA to do the Air Traffic Selection and Training Exam. I have to pick a date sometime between mid oct to mid nov. While it's certainly not a guaranteed job offer, it's definitely a good sign, and my credentials are much better than many of the average joes coming off the street that are applying for this.

Anyways, has anybody here taken this test? From what I've read in other forums it's relatively easy. Some say to not even bother buying test-prep material. I'm thinking I'm buying it regardless since, rumor has it, people with the top scores are the first ones to get the job.

redflag  I would buy it if I were you. It will more than likely help. Get the ones from Dale Crane, if available. I have found his A&P test guides to be extremely helpful.

I've taken it and it wasn't traumatic and I didn't want to strangle small, cute puppies afterward. I went into it cold, not having bothered with the test prep stuff. I wish I had used it, especially for the Letter Factory portion. That section gave me a headache. The rest is fairly simple, especially for someone with flight experience.

Good luck and while you'll get your score within a couple of days, be prepared to wait a really looooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg time to progress through the rest of the process.
I lift things up and put them down.

"Don't study" is the lamest excuse for advice ever. Always review the material, even if you're sure you know it!

Good luck!

I didn't study and missed well qualified by 2 points, that was last year. I was contacted twice to pick my 2 locations and that's about as far as I got.

So far I've joined the stuckmic forums and they have lots of good stuff there. They built a great study guide too. The math part is a serious headache for me though, even though it's simple arithmetic and basic flight calculations. I've always had a severe math handicap though all my life. Time to practice practice practice!

You? ATC? I can see that now....all the hot female pilots will get priority clearance if they give you your phone number or come see you afterwards. Male pilots will be asked to go around and put into the back of the stack!

Jokes aside, good luck. I don't know what kind of exam it is...multiple choice or short answers...but one thing that I've seen in my students is that even if they know all the stuff...they are not used to the timings of the exam. What ends up happening is that they either don't finish or fill up BS on their multiple choice answers. Thats why even if you know all the stuff inside out, you should practice the exams just to get an idea of the timing. Do the practice exams as if it was real exam and you'd get a pretty good idea of where you stand.

Oh man, I've been practicing. "Cleared to BEDDD direct. Climb and maintain on top of me. No delay." Big grin

I'm working on it. The test is all on computer and self paced, you have 8hrs to do it which should be more than enough  Smile

As long as there are no premature landings, it should work well Big grin

Which position did you apply for? Was it the open off-the-street bid or just one of the regular postings?
