Paranormal...several Questions.

Wed Sep 30, 2009 9:12 pm

1. Do you believe in the paranormal?

2. What led you to hold this belief in the paranormal?

3. If you DO believe in the paranormal, can you be an atheist as well? Agnostic yes, but an atheist?!

Food for thought. What say you?

Perfect! Just the answer I hoped to see. Spooky? Unique perhaps!
I mean, I find it interesting you can believe in one and not the other!

I am what you term a "sensitive". I frequently get "touched" by these spirits perhaps in an attempt to communicate and I got this from my mother, who is also displays similar abilities. When I was younger, I could actually see these beings but as I grew older I was only able to feel and sometimes hear them.

It is not something you get used to because it still scares the shit out of me from time to time. But I guess I deal with it.

On a recent trip down under to Adelaide, I experienced a haunted hotel as detailed in this trip report.

The skeptics really find it hard to believe such things exists but just because you do not feel it, it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Quoting Mirrodie (Thread starter):
1. Do you believe in the paranormal?

Yes, in that I believe there are all sorts of things in this world which we don't understand and have not yet been explained or verified by science.

Same as Ryanair!!!-

... except I seem to have inherited this from my maternal grandmother rather than from my mother.

Interesting question. I'm more atheist than anything else, and I do believe that the things I've experienced can and eventually will be explained and quantified in a scientific manner, so I suppose atheism and a belief in the "paranormal" are not mutually exclusive concepts.

It depends on what you assume is paranormal. I don´t believe in aliens and UFO´s.

RE: Paranormal...several Questions.

1) Yes

2) More of a feeling than anything else. I've always felt like there were spirits around, both good and bad, and that they've helped to guide my intuition. I've never seen physical shapes or evidence of them though.

3) Not sure how to answer this one because I'm not an atheist. I realize that atheism doesn't have a guidebook, but I've always thought atheist just didn't believe in a godlike figure. That doesn't mean they can't believe in echoes or spirits.

If you had brought today's science and technology to the stone age, the cavemen would have thought it was paranormal.

Quoting Mirrodie (Thread starter):
1. Do you believe in the paranormal?

It depends exactly what you mean by paranormal ?

If you mean do I believe in ghosts , god , the tooth fairy and other things like those then the answer is 'no' .

If you mean do I believe that there are many things out there which we cant explain based on current levels of knowledge then my answer would be 'yes' .

ooops , I forgot the other two questions

Quoting Mirrodie (Thread starter):
2. What led you to hold this belief in the paranormal?

46 years on this planet experiencing weirdness . Bearing in mind that I am not entirely clear exactly what you mean when you use the term paranormal.

Yes, I am an atheist .

WOW. I'll have to view that TR later. Pretty amazing. I know some folks in our family feel they are used as mediums. I personally don;t but I do have a 6th sense of sorts. Unfortunately, I haven't learned how to tap into it.

Well that is the premise of the discussion. I find it interesting that someone can be an atheist but holds some belief in the paranormal, like ghosts, spirits, etc.

Except I would answer the question no. If you look back into history there were a lot of phenomenon/things/stuff/whatever that humanities knowledge of the time did not understand and/or comprehend. A lot of that got lumped into the realm of the paranormal. As our knowledge of the world around us has evolved many of these questions have been answered. Now I will be the first to acknowledge that humanities knowledge of the world/universe is pretty small.... this isn't a poor reflection upon the scientific community, but rather a practical limitation based on the pure vastness/infiniteness of our world.

With all that said I am open to the idea that what people describe as ghosts/spirits are real. But I do not personally believe as such.

No problem. You're very much in the majority in your beliefs (or lack thereof).  bigthumbsup

Hollywood has made absurd amounts of money over-dramatizing paranormal encounters of every variety, and this tends to discount the believability of actual paranormal events.

1. Do you believe in the paranormal?

Yes

2. What led you to hold this belief in the paranormal?

Seeing 4 ghosts up close and personal. Once in a kitchen, twice at work and once at a friends house...all in broad daylight. Also, i've heard footsteps, knocking and doors slamming shut in a house only occupied by myself.

3. If you DO believe in the paranormal, can you be an atheist as well? Agnostic yes, but an atheist?!

Being an atheist doesn't mean you have to believe in religion to see ghosts/spirits....personally i belive the two aren't interconnected.

Ain't that the truth - case in point:

1. Yes, I do

2. Many things;
* Hearing footsteps throughout the house when I was in on my own, or hearing them upstairs when everyone was downstairs
* Feeling a presence behind me when I know no-one was in the room with me
* Seeing things out of the corner of my eye when looking in the mirror
* Room temperature suddenly rising or falling
* TV and other electrical devices flickering on and off/ changing channel when the remote was sitting on the table/bedside cabinet

3. I'm agnostic. I believe there was a God, a long long time ago.

Yes

Experiences of my Aunt and Uncles house as a kid that had an entity living in it. They lived in the house for years and even gave it a name. Finally it was to much for them and they sold the house and moved. Also have had personal experiences myself and have had several friends with experiences with something in their home. What are these things I do not know but there is something there.
