Three Cheers For This Guy

Sat Oct 10, 2009 2:21 pm

Generosity and humility which is all too absent in our society these days. This young man gave all £10,000 of his reward for supplying information leading to the conviction of an appalling rapist to the victim, who to this day is still in a wheelchair following the disgusting and hideously violent attack.

I don't know what to say other than well done. This guy rocks.

Nice gesture. Very laudable, especially in these times of economic hardship...

Definitely an example.

Not that I expected this thread to reach 200 replies or anything, but I find it very depressing that so few people want to discuss such a fine example of how to behave and would rather debate death, war and politics. I think it is a sad indictment. Perhaps others could suggest some other fine examples of how ordinary citizens have helped redress the balance against the very worst elements of society?

Sorry, but my heartfelt appreciation was deemed insufficient by a moderator and was deleted.

In repeating the sentiment: I guess I can relate to why he refused to keep the money; But it's still a great decision and one of the many reasons why I refuse to become a cynic.

Perhaps this is, because there is little to discuss in this case? We can of course all join and praise Lloyd Gardner's generosity, or do you really expect someone to say "Damn, this **** should spend his 10,000 in alolohl or weed! Why does this **** give HIS money to HER? Does he promote socialism, or what?"
As interesting this case is, cheer groups aren't.

As for other cases, I remember an article saying that someone found 6,000 Euro and gave the money to the police. There are no reports on what the police did with the money.  Wink

What a nice and refreshing change in seeing the humanity in this man. All to often we read and see in the news media of some of the scum of society. Thank God some people like Mr. Lloyd Gardner are around us.

Basically, because there is nothing to debate here. I guess we can all synchophantically heap laurels on the man, but to what end.

People prefer to debate topics that are debate-able. In my mind, debating what this man did is like debating whether the sun will come up tomorrow. Personally, I wouldn't even provide an answer to someone who castigates this man for what he did.

Disagree. How about the fact that things like this don't happen enough? Maybe someone thinks he should have kept some of it for himself? Maybe people think there shouldn't be cash rewards for doing the right thing? All just examples - there are many other potential avenues too.

No kidding. Thanks for the input.  sarcastic

 bigthumbsup

It's great to see a story about someone doing something good and selfless to help someone that needs it.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

Unfortunately, stories that end up in tragedies, pain, injustice and, generally speaking, that stir our most basic instincts of disagreement, anger and fear will ALWAYS sell more than the righteous ones.

I guess we aren't as evolved a species as we would like to think.

Indeed you are right. One poster has already pointed out that there is nothing to debate here, and the only thing to do is to heap praise on the guy, which is not interesting. You will, however, notice that when the reverse is true, and it is a simple bad news story involving something awful, people are more than happy to spend their time pouring scorn on evil-doers and condemning vile acts.
