Will You Get The H1N1 Immunization?

Fri Oct 16, 2009 6:21 am

I personally am almost looking forward to getting it at this point. H1N1 is spreading rapidly in California, especially at colleges.

Are you going to get the vaccine?

I teach at a university and work at a hospital as well, so I have to get vaccinated.

My 8 year granddaughter get hers today - a priority patient because of her medical history. Her 5 year old brother also got one - the price of being in the same room at the wrong time.

My wife is also a priority because of her leukemia and should get hers tomorrow.

I'll get mine when the VA says it's my turn. They gave the "normal" flue shots early in order to extend the time between the two. I anticipate they will be calling us in based on our priorities. Don't even want to think what those are.

I will get it as soon as they offer it at UCSF.

I am a UCSF student, and I get the free flu shot each year. I think they'll be getting the H1N1 vaccine soon (I don't know when).

Nope, as I don't think it's been tested enough and swine flu is virtually no different to ordinary flu. I've only ever had flu once, and that was 14 years ago

No way. I've had the flu twice in my life, when I was 3 and about 2 years ago. Never had a flu shot before, either. The new H1N1 strain is really no different than the regular flu anyways.

Sorry for the sarcasm. I just feel this whole "swine flu" hysteria has gone out of control.

You were probably already exposed to another flu or cold virus, and the shot just weakened your immune system further.

I am not going to take it. I did not take any other vaccines and never had any problems with the vaccine protecting illnesses. I never get flu. Also I believe it's much a media hype.
It is not mandatory where I live so I am free to choose not to be vaccinated.

From what I can see, H1N1 is spreading faster than the flu last year. If I'm sick for one week, I'll lose 10% of my time this quarter and I'd prefer not to do that.

Are you going to get the vaccine?

Yes - I'm 57 with no health issues, but I've found for years that when I get a regular flu shot, my number of colds and sick days in the flu season is significantly lower.

Quoting Aero145 (Reply 13):

Quoting Maverick623 (Reply 14):
but there is ZERO data to support such a hypothesis.

Are you saying this is not a different strain, different version than the regular flu?

Because that has been proven beyond any doubt. It is not a hypothesis, but a fact.

Now, are you saying this is not any worse than the 'normal' flu? That might be true. What has been proven is that H1N1 is killing people who would have survived normal flu by significant numbers.

Normal years - we get vaccinated against one or three versions of the flu, and we do not get vaccinated against the three to five relatively rare versions. Some years the rare versions turn out to be the most common and most of the people are vulnerable.

This year all they are recomending is two vaccinations - one for the normal expected versions, and one for a special version which is a proven killer.

There could still be one of the other versions of flu for which we will not be vaccinated against that spreads heavily.

Part of the discussion reminds me of threads six or seven months ago which said the Swine Flu is just a myth, a short term media hype. Well, it is half a year later, it is still here, and it has killed almost 2 dozen children ages 6-15 in the Dallas / Fort Worth area in the past month. The majority of which had no underlying health issues.

swine flu is virtually no different to ordinary flu.

There is one difference that's significant - viral pneumonia much more commonly than the typical flu. This appears to be one factor that is killing kids at a higher than norma rate.

Quote:
The World Health Organization urged doctors Friday to treat suspected swine flu cases as quickly as possible with antiviral drugs, warning that the virus can cause potentially life-threatening viral pneumonia much more commonly than the typical flu, sometimes in relatively young, otherwise healthy people.

"It's not like seasonal influenza," said Nikki Shindo, a medical officer in the WHO's Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response Department. "It can cause very severe disease in previously healthy young adults."

Unlike the seasonal flu, Shindo said, the virus appears more likely to travel deep into the lungs, where it can cause viral pneumonia. Such a condition can cause severe lung damage and a life-threatening condition known as acute respiratory distress syndrome.

"Remarkably different is this small subset of patients that presents very severe viral pneumonia," Shindo said.

I work in a hospital and I signed all the paperwork to deny the flu and H1N1 shots. I've never had a flu shot of any kind. From what I've asked around a lot of the nurses and other workers also denied the shots.

I do have a fitted N-95 respiratory mask that I wear when dealing with flu patients.

I work as a nurse at an infectious disease clinic. During the next couple of months we'll be getting a lot of flu patients, and I don't wanna be home for five days because I didn't take the vaccine. And I meet many people that have many other diseases that make them more vulnerable.

Nah. Never had a flu shot and always been fine. If I were to get one, maybe the regular flu, but not H1N1.

Aside from being developed in a rush, I know someone who had H1N1 and it was not even a big deal. She wasn't even going to get tested for it (she insisted on it) and her doctor told her the only people getting tested/counted in statistics are those hospitalized. So, there's probably hundreds if not thousands of H1N1 cases out there that aren't being reported or causing huge problems.

I guess I'm already immunized by accident. I met patient 0, the first confirmed case in Mexico, who's my cousin's girlfriend's sister. She said all she got was a sore throat and a runny nose, and a negligible fever, lasted about 2 weeks and that was it. A few days after I met her I got the exact same symptoms for just under two weeks. And then it was over. Funny thing is I don't think I passed on the disease to anybody else.

I just find it strange that from, what it sounds like, either some people barely have any problems from the disease and others end up dead. And people that you wouldn't expect to be vulnerable otherwise (healthy young adults).

Yes, but only if/when it gets dispensed at my employer, who (at another plant) actually is one of the producers of the normal seasonal flu vaccines as well as the vaccine against that H1N1-virus.
Plus in our plant we process frozen pancreas glands of hogs, so getting a "Swine Flu"-epidemic would not make for the best publicity, even though it is absolutely clear that there is no connection.

I had the H1N1 virus itself in July / August - came in two waves, first time my GP thought it was a chest infection, 2nd an ear infection. Only later did they diagnose swine flu, and by then it was too late for Tamiflu. Still, I got over it after a week in bed, and hopefully now my immune system can take it if it were to come back  Smile

RE: Will You Get The H1N1 Immunization?

I am not going to get immunised against something that hasn’t been *proven* to be anything else than a ”normal” influenza.

It's true that H1N1 isn't that far off the mark from a typical flu, although it has some remarkable characteristics, such as the fact that the patients who fare the worst are often the youngest and healthiest.

However, if you would normally get a flu shot, then you should get H1N1. If you are opposed to flu shots in general, then I can't argue why H1N1 is somehow more necessary than any other flu shot.

No chance I'm getting a flu shot of any kind! I get the flu, bad, every time I've ever had the shot.......

I'm not very worried about dying from any type of flu anyway though...

Maybe this will help the people who say there is nothing to worry about. It seems like more than media hype to me.  Sad

Well, I hadn’t given that a thought, that I must admit.

Well no, when getting a flu-shot stopped being mandatory, I didn’t ask for more shots later on.

Time will tell though - hopefully your immunisation worked and you won’t get the H1N1 from your patients.  Wink
