Computer Help Hard Drive Problem

Thu Oct 22, 2009 3:20 pm

OK i download a lot of stuff from the Internet using the firefox download tool straight to my external hard drive and I've never had any problems but today when i was downloading it was being saved to the external hard drive but also taking up space on the internal drive to the point where i ran out of space,i only have a small 40 gig internal, and the download stopped i couldn't find anything new on the internal so i deleted some games on the internal drive after deleting the files i was downloading didnt give any space back to give me a few gigs back and the downloads started again so does anyone know why the downloads are going to my external drive but seem to be using up space on my internal drive thanks in advance.

The term Broadband comes from the two primary uses of high speed internet downloading porn (broads) and MP3s (bands)

That sounds more like a virus that is affecting your internal drive. Is your computer slower than usual as well?

Download this program called JDisk Report. It will scan your drives and indicate exactly what files/folders are taking up most of the space. Based on that you can decide if it is a virus or something else that is taking up the space.

You can download it here: http://download.cnet.com/JDiskReport...000-2248_4-10330941.html?tag=mncol

Your downloads are going to the Firefox temporary download directory before being copied to your external hard drive. Therefore, if the file you download is larger than the free space on your internal drive, it won't work.

The exact location of the temporary download directory depends on your operating system (Windows? OS X?). You can find the answer easily by searching for "firefox temporary download directory" on your favorite search engine. Once found, you can delete the files in there.

D'Oh! I was completely off to a tangent. It never occured to me that it would go to the temporary download directory first.

As far as I know, you can't have your temporary folder on an external drive, or strange things will start to happen.

Notebook hard disks are cheap nowadays. I guess you're better off with replacing the internal one.
