Oil Refinery Explodes In Puerto Rico?

Fri Oct 23, 2009 7:08 am

I just saw this online while i was looking for something else.
I do not see anything about it on any news sites, not BBC or others to confirm it.
Is this true?

The only link I have is a Youtube video of the oil refinery on fire.
It looks very important.

For a while it was thought that the explosion was caused by a plane crash. Thanks God that was not the case. Spirit Airlines Crash - Puerto Rico (by Av8orwalk Oct 22 2009 in Civil Aviation)

From what I have gathered in the Puerto Rican news outlets there was only 3 injured (mostly due to smoke inhalation). Additionally, the fire has been contained. I was so startled when I saw the thread on the civil aviation forum-regarding the NK crash-thankfully it was not true.

I am trying to determine from information available that this refinery was doing much else than supplying petroleum products for power generation and fuel for Puerto Rico.

I know at one time Puerto Rico had at least two refineries that desulfurized the high sulfur crude from Venezuela before being sent on to the US. I think the US imposing the use of low sulfur fuel has made these refineries uneconomical to operate for some years. Venezuela now ships its crude where there are little or no restrictions on sulfur content.

This incident will have a large impact on Puerto Rico but I do not think it will have just a whole lot of effect on the US. Expect to see pressure on the airlines operating in the region and to start tankering fuel which was already expensive. If the damage is serious then electrical power generation will be an issue for Puerto Rico.

Will that cause a spike on the gas prices, here in the U.S.?

I don't think the impact will be that big in the US, no worries.
