Napoleon Dynamite: Like It Or Love It?

Fri Oct 23, 2009 9:48 pm

So, as im sat here with a few of my mates and a few (crates) of beer, were watching Napoleon Dynamite. I should point out i have been pretty obsessed with this film for years and know it pretty much off by heart - sad i know!

What do you guys think of it? If you have not seen it before, you must. And if you have what do you think? I cant believe anyone could not like it!

A few facts which amazed me about it:

It only cost $400,000 to film
It grossed $46m (in the US alone), making it a huge success
Jon Heder, who played Napoleon, was paid just $1000
The filming was completed in just 22 days.

I saw this in the theaters about 4 or 5 times, dragging different friends who hadn't seen it yet. So that should tell you how I feel about it. Big grin

It's amazing that it only cost that much make, but grossed so much. I wonder how much more it made out of DVD sales.

Had it been about an hour shorter I could have tolerated it, but I found it to be just painful after about 45 minutes.

I've only seen it all the way through in one sitting once, but in total I've probably seen it 4-5 times if you add all of the snippets (I used to sit on the board of a film festival that took over 7 of 10 screens in a multiplex; one year it was running in one of the 3 "normal" screens so every time I ran past that theater in the projection booth I got a minute or two... much more amusing that way.

The most retarded and pointless movie I've ever seen. I want 82 minutes of my life back.

At first I thought it was stupid. Maybe the 3rd time of watching it (nothing else was on) I started to find it funny. Maybe it made my IQ drop the first 2 times, which caused me to find it funny the 3rd time lol.

I've been meaning to watch this film. I am HUGE fan of cheap low-budget B-movies. Too bad it's almost dead nowadays.
The best were done 30-40 years ago.

Other movies you should check out:

Black Shampoo
Avenging Disco Godfather
Truck Turner
Willie Dynamite
Human Tornado
Delinquent School Girls
Satan's Cheerleaders
Superchick
Roller Boogie

Wow, that is devotion!

Saw it once. It was cute, overhyped. But then again, I probably thought as highly about Clerks and the followup KEvin Smith flicks ( Chasing Amy, Dogma, Clerks 2, Jay and Silent Bob, Mall Rats) and raved about them to others too.

I usually find pointless stuff like this funny, but I think I laughed about once during the whole film. Honestly, I can't see what the fuss is all about.

I actually saw it for the first time in -05 since my girlfriend at the time had it on DVD. Loved it and watched it 20 times. Now, I like it. Hilarious movie, but definitely not a Top 20 in my book.

After my first viewing I sounded like the other posters who hated it, or didn't even watch the whole movie.
Then I was in the room when my sister watched it a while later, half paying attention.
Then I found myself quoting it.
Then I found myself watching it again. Several times.

You definitely can't be uptight about such things and it helps to take a " I understand it's bad, but..." approach. But if you do, it entertains, which is what a movie should do.

It was probably the most overrated film I've seen in decades, never got what the fuss was all about and if I had to recommend it to anyone I'd tell them to watch the first 10mins of it, then go out and come back at the lst 5 minutes to see

The End!
Pretty much boring and unnecessary really. The only thing I really got out of watching it was realising afterwards what all those Vote for Pedro t-shirts were about.

My big problem with it was that it could have been 2/3 the length. The first 1/3-1/2 of the movie is just spent doing set-up, showing the train wreck that is Napoleon, his community, and his life.

Had they just gotten to the plot, it would have been a lot better.

One of the greatest comedy films I've seen... definitely ranks as my favorite comedies, just below American Pie 1 and 2  Wink

Are you SERIOUS? I would've paid him $1000 just to do that hilarious dancing scene.

Haha exactly. Same here! That had me rolling over when i first saw it!!

Another thing someone told me, that add on wedding scene at the end of the movie was commissioned by FOX i think, and that 5 minute scene cost FOX more than the entire rest of the film!

Quite possibly the most over-rated movie ever.

I've seen commercials that made me laugh more in 60 seconds than this entire movie does.

Although I do concede the dancing scene was good.

And it shows. I have seen it on TV several times and still think it is a pointless movie that has nothing really to add. I just don't get it. There was nothing funny in the movie. I don't understand what the big deal is.

Funny thing about those films, I loved Clerks and Mallrats. Starting with how much I enjoyed those two films, I saw Dogma. I was not impressed. Then, Chasing Amy. I gave up about 30 minutes in. So, I never saw Clerks 2 or Jay and Silent Bob. There just comes a point when the joke is just not funny anymore.

The clips I've seen look really stupid. It seems as though they have a self-awareness of being cheesy which I am not a fan of. I like low-budget films that attempt to be serious on a shoe-string budget.

When I watched the movie in theater it was PAINFUL! Though it was still funny... It's one of those movies where it's painful to watch, but funny to quote from later (to an extent). Though the idea about a social outcast in school and the strange looks and attire seemed to parallel Mary Katherine Gallagher from the movie "Super Star". When I got back to school (still in high school when it came out) if I heard one more person mention "vote for pedro", "ligers" or "eat the frickin' quesadilla" I would have gone crazy!!

Sorta, but they are cheap B-movies that were funny. I think the Evil Dead movies were not meant to be funny, but they sure turned out to be hilarious. Army of Darkness was purely a comedy. I'm such a fan of Bruce Campbell.

Speaking of zombie flicks: back in my college stoner days, I watched Dead Alive and Jack Frost. I actually liked them, as long as I was high. I watched them both when I was sober and can't believe I sat through those duds!
