Your Opinion Of W.H. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs?

Wed Oct 28, 2009 5:05 pm

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Robert Gibbs, the current WH Press Secretary for President Obama, does not exude a lot of confidence when he gives his press conferences? While I have no doubt he has sterling credentials, his posture and facial expressions leave one with the sense that he's not very credible and, perhaps, an outright dork. I've thought the same of a few other Press Secretaries in the past, such as Scott McClellan (George W. Bush), Dee Dee Myers and Joe Lockhart (Bill Clinton).

I'm surprised no one in the WH considers how they come across in public during press conferences and give more weight to their qualifications based on public appearances rather than other factors including, I'm sure, political considerations. IMO, Gibbs should not be the face of the Obama administration because he just looks lost up there.

On a positive note, some of the better ones IMO have been Jody Powell (Carter), Larry Speakes (Reagan), Mike McCurry (Clinton), and Dana Perino (Bush 43).

Ari Fleischer was a good showman. I didn't pay much attention to Scott McLellan but I am proud of him for speaking out about how Dubya and his cronies messed up the Iraq matter.

I am always fond of George Stephanopoulos's response to the question of whether a specific amount in Clinton's middle class tax increase would apply to single adults or to married couples. "Look, we're comparing apples and oranges here."

Yyyyyyyyyyyeah.

Dana Perino was quite good, and always seemed confident, even when she had to face a very bias media, and defend a pretty lame president...Bush 43. She still remained professional and always seemed to answer questions fully. Gibbs bumbles around just like Obama when the big O's team of teleprompters goes awry...  Yeah sure Gibbs always seems like he's blowing smoke, or that he's never being fully honest. About on par with the POTUS.

Agreed. He certainly doesn't handle the press with anything resembling aplomb. Although I think I like "wishy-washy" better than "used-car salesman."

He comes off on the same level as Bush 43 delivering a speech. Not great.

He may be smart, but he sure as heck can't convey it.

I think Gibbs is precisely the person Obama wants in that job.

First, it's not supposed to be an exciting event every day when Gibbs walks into the Press Room. Simple discussions on what's on the calendar for the day and other basic stuff.

When something more interesting is desired Gibbs still gets the point made.

And when there is a desire to minimize how much information is passed on that day he still gets through the session without too many upset journalists.

And he appears to get along with the journalists.

Looks like just the guy for the job.

Agreed. He seems like a regular guy and I like him. Bush's nightmarish characters just made my skin crawl and my blood boil.

By being completely not-slick, he is more trustworthy and likable to news media. Which is important.

He's just like all the previous press sec's of the past couple decades, a professional liar, but they pretty much have to be to some extent.

Absolutely worthless.

But then again considering the material the Obama administration gives him, it may not be entirely him
