Norman Painting, who played Phil Archer in the long running BBC radio soap opera The Archers, has died at the age of 85.
Painting had played Phil Archer since the pilot episode in 1950. He recorded what became his final scenes just two days before his death. They will be broadcast on Sunday, November 22.
Not only did Painting star in the what has become Britain's longest running Soap Opera, he also wrote almost 1,200 scripts during his time on the writing team, and he often used to tweak his lines to make them sound more realistic.
On the BBC Radio 4 website, Vanessa Whitburn, editor of The Archers, said I take such comfort from the fact that Norman got his wish, and continued playing the part for which he was so well loved, right up until the end of his life. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio4/20.../10/norman_painting_1924_2009.html
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him both as himself and as Phil Archer.
Rest in Peace, Norman.
