Ford Earns 1 Billion 3 Quarter

Mon Nov 02, 2009 1:12 pm

The Father of the Boeing 777, Allen Mulally continues to work his magic at Ford as they post 3rd Quarter earning of 1 Billion. I've got to say Ford has been making some really nice cars since Allen got there and the newer 'retro' look Mustangs are SHARP. So much so I might just go shopping for one next year.

I am happy to hear it. Living in Ford's backyard I see a lot of Fords and they sure do have some great cars out right now. I am very happy they are doing well. A lot of people in my part of town depend on Ford doing well for their jobs and taxes paid to cities.

The latest mustang is 10X sexier than the one that was introduced in '05 or whatever it was, the new headlights front and rear and the new hood look fantastic, and the interior is much nicer. I'd definitely consider a GT if I were in the market for a car. The new fusion is also a looker and apparently a nice drive (though the euro mondeo is more appealing), and I'm looking for a review of the new SHO which is a blast no doubt. Good for Ford, especially nice that they achieve a healthy profit without a single cent of bailout.

Wonder how GM is doing?

As a US taxpayer and thus 70% owner of GM, I hope they're doing OK.

Maybe to give GM a leg up we should create a 100% tax deduction for money spent purchasing a GM product?

They'd have to give me more than a 100% tax-deduction. They'd have to give me a a 100% tax credit.

More proof that capitalism does work.

Collectivist industry has a pretty bad score, if you compare it. Let us raise the hammer and sickle, and create a People's industry, pay each worker according to his need, blah blah blah...

Doesn't work. GM might live on or it might not. But the point is, they already took $90B from us. And much more if you think about how they influenced our energy policy over the years.

It's a myth that industries cannot survive by themselves. It's a myth that they need government help. It's a myth that government help is benign.

Good job Ford, however the earnings are a bit more due to the alignment of many stars then an indication things are peachy with the company or industry.

Ford themselves indicated they got a big revenue boost in the Cash for Clunkers program during the quarter while on the other side they saw reduced production, materials and commodity cost to the tune of $500mil as many factories were temporarily shut, or producing at minimum levels this summer.

Will be interesting to see what a more normalized Q4 looks like, however overall they did give guidance of "solid" profits in 2011, which would be a great thing to see.

Maybe we should sell GM to Ford for $90B and let Alan the wunderkind fix it all?

If it were only that simple...

Mullaly really is an excellent leader, i believe he basically re-mortgaged the whole company. This was a massive risk and i hope it eventually pays off, which it seems to be so far.

Actually, that part was done prior to Mulally coming on board.

He cut a lot of factories and a lot of workers - and was heavily criticized at that time. But it appears things are settling down now; they have cash, and more importantly, more confidence than they ever had. Glad to see one of Americas Big Three going strong  Smile

Although one of their best seller vehicles was the Ford Focus, thanks in huge part to the popular "cash for clunkers" government program. I also believe that many Americans purchased Fords over GM or Chrysler vehicles as a protest due to the massive taxpayer bailout of those two manufacturers.

Not counting the money GMAC got, and is still getting.

All of this could backfire on the tax payers. CIT, which also got BILLIONS, filed for bankruptcy protection this week. We the tax payers are out all that money, it does not have to ever be repaid.

Really? It had nothing to do with worries about GM or Chrysler going belly up, making their cars almost unserviceable, their warrantees worthless and their resale value plunge?

Not aiming at you here, but some folks just have to see the politics in everything, sigh...

You make it sound as if cash for clunkers was a ford-specific program. Toyota, Honda, and Ford were the 3 top sellers from the program, not just ford.
I don't believe anyone will buy a car of all things to spite a government. Consumer reports consistently rates Ford vehicles higher than GM and especially Chrysler. To be honest, Ford is the only company that can compete with Toyota, Honda, and VW. GM's only valuable offering is Cadillac. On the trucks side, yes Chevy is a strong contender. But for cars, they have a weak offering with even worse residual value.
Now you're really flying

All i can say is that the moment you get money from the gov you start to become a bit lazy because you than always think how the gov will be behind you again, BTW i own a European Ford, its a Ford Escort 1998 years with 1.8 L engine 16v. It is a work horse.

I believe it should be mentioned here that CIT had 2.3 billion invested by the federal government, while GM and Chrysler have many multiples of that....also CIT finances a large percentage of the small and mid sized businesses in the country, so they REALLY needed the influx to keep the rest of the economy from tail spinning worse then it already is/was...

Interesting thing though, I read an article recently (I will try and find it later tonight if needed) that mentioned how since Ford did not go through bankruptcy like GM and Chrysler, it is saddled with a very large debt (approx 23B?). And that in coming years that will be a big issue for them and could hinder them WRT being profitable compared to GM and Chrysler.

It is sort of like AA vs all the other airlines, by not going through bankruptcy AA is at somewhat of a disadvantage as compared to their competitors who did.

Good to hear Ford is doing well.
I've always and always will buy Ford, Mercury, Lincoln vehicles.
They are simply the best.
Glad to see the Panther platform still in production.
Eventually, Mercury and Lincoln will need to have some performance sedans that go against the CTS-V, STS-V, 300C SRT8, Charger SRT8 and G8.

Not to mention that Mulally was the head of the 777 project, which we know has been phenomenally successful for Boeing.

Boeing's board made a colossal mistake by passing Mulally over for McNerney.
