USA T-Mobile Network Down

Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:35 am

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10390097-56.html

I was wondering why my phone was silent today.

Here in PHX I can make calls but no text messages are sent or received.

And that's exactly why I have Verizon. T-Mobile's service is absolutely horrible.

I've never had strong feelings one way or the other (partially because I've never known anyone who admitted to having T-Mobile service) but coming on the heals of loosing all Sidekick user's data [even if most of it was/will be recovered "eventually"] due to what seems to be a mismanaged or nonexistant disaster recovery/backup management plan makes it unlikely I would ever consider T-Mobile.

Are they running their network out of some tin shack in the middle of a wheat field somewhere?

So it wasn't just a local thing. It only seemed to last about 15 minutes.

That isn't true. It really all depends on where you are. Verizon absolutely sucks in the L.A. area, and T-Mo's customer service is second to none.

The Sidekick issue was actually not really the fault of T-Mobile, but Danger/Microsoft. It was also partially a phone design issue, as not all information was stored locally at any one time. T-Mobile rectified that by making sure all future phones store locally, even if they also store in a cloud.

I readily admit to it. Rather popular here in L.A.

I've never had a problem in the L.A. area with Verizon. Nor the Boston area.

Every cellphone provider has their little spots where you don't get good reception, for whatever reason. But it's never been an issue for me.

My whole family had (and is still having) problems. I came out of school today, called my mum, and I could not get through, even though I had full bars. When she picked me up, same thing on her end, and on my dad's too.

I agree with your point. I've never had problems with either ATT or T-Mobile in either of those places and many others.

CNET received an email from T-Mobile stating that only 5% of customers had issues.

If they can't even tell how many people can't connect, or why, their business license should be pulled.

Um, they just said it. 5%, including me. Pretty fast response actually.

I think that was more like - we have restored the service to 95% and 5% still are having issues. But seems like more and more people are getting service back. They are covering it over at Gizmodo.

Thanks for the link. Interestingly, I didn't notice the problems nearly as early as T-Mo says they started (about 1430 local) but other people trying to call did. I had a friend send me a text and connect on Google Talk who said she was trying to call but getting an busy signal or a service interruption message. I called out with no problem. Then, around 1615 local, I lost all bars and couldn't make or receive calls for about 15 minutes, but could access the various internet features on the phone by wifi.

RE: USA T-Mobile Network Down

T-Mobile seriously, massively, monumentally, and REPEATEDLY messed up my account during the brief time I was with them. They never processed my payments, stuck me therefore with "late" fees, actually disconnected my service and even when I got to the point when the rep I was on the phone with actually understood the story as I reported it, and didn't try to controvert it or otherwise claim that T-Mobile hadn't screwed up (in other words, ADMITTED that they had screwed up, badly) STILL insisted that I pony up a $10 "reconnect fee."

Naturally I threw the phone in the recycle bin and never contacted T-Mobile again.

Three years later they sent me a flyer in the mail saying I was preapproved. I actually needed a cell-phone (had been with Cingular, delightedly, but was having money probs on the side and let the account slip) so I thought I would try burying the hatchet. I called T-Mobile to take them up on the offer, the girl stepped me thru the whole sign-up process which took about ten or fifteen minutes and then, just as we were finalizing things, the line got disconnected. (I was calling from a landline in a Miami hotel room at the time.) I called back and got a completely different rep who hadn't heard of the other rep (her name was Britney; something I should've read meaning into from the start) and who told me that there was no way to pick up where I left off; their system doesn't allow their reps to save a new enrollment as a "draft" in case just such a cutoff occurs.

So to sign up with T-Mobile, I would have to go through the 10-15 minute rigamarole all over again. Since they won't let their employees save their work in progress.

I have a low opinion of T-Mobile, they've never NOT screwed up when I've dealt with them, so I'm not surprised they let their entire network go dark and I would relish seeing their business take a huge hit because of this.

I was a TMobile subscriber for 5yrs before switching over to AT&T because of the iPhone. I've never had problems with either while traveling throughout the country.

What I would like to know is what are people's views on Sprint. I had horrible luck with them and the only people I know that still have Sprint in Houston are those that were originally Nextel customers. Dropped calls, crappy signals, uninterested customer service, and crappy devices were the main reasons I had left.

I have Sprint and I am satisfied with it. (Not delighted, like I was with Cingular's signal strength and call quality, but satisfied.)

I've only had one dropped call. Overall the coverage could be better (I only have two bars here in my basement apartment; and it's not any stronger on the patio (this is just south of Oakland CA), but as I said it's satisfactory.

No, the statement was clear in that only 5% of customers were affected.

I got service back at about 9:45pm MST, and it seems like the issue has cleared up.

I still say, even from a public safety standpoint, that this needs to be investigated by someone.

Actually, emergency calls would have still gone through.

Shocked it took so long. Like I said, problems appear to have started for me around 3:30 pm PST, but I didn't lose all service till around 4:20 pm PST, and that lasted only about 15-20 minutes.

Yes, but only because other network's towers were still operating. A nationwide outage like this is very serious if there's a possibility it could affect other networks.

Actually, this brings up a question. Why didn't we end up roaming on ATT for the down time?

If it makes you Americans feel any better, T-Mobile sucks in Europe too and frequently has low signal in major areas. I had T-mobile for a week and after barely any signal I switched to Orange.

I for one am moving to Verizon tomorrow. Not only is their coverage subpar, now all of a sudden I don't qualify for the $100 credit to my bill because I didn't lose *all* my Sidekick contacts, just two thirds of them or so.
