This sentence was weak and doesn't prevent the other losers like this guy from doing the same.
They have not actually been sentenced yet - it's entirely possible they both may get only probation, but the local DA is pressing for Richard Heene to get at lease some jail time, although they seem OK
with Mayumi only getting probation. They also face potentially having to pay back the search & rescue costs (at least $62k, possibly more), Mayumi could face immigration issues possibly up to deportation (although for the benefit of the children, that's unlikely, especially if he draws jail time), the Federal government can potentially bring additional charges against them, particularly for potential interference with aviation, and the Colorado child welfare folks haven't been heard from yet.
I'd be satisfied with probation for both of them and repayment of the search & rescue costs, but with one catch - they aren't allowed to pursue any television or book deals until the probation is served out, and they have to have a psychiatric evaluation and care if needed...their constant need for publicity and willingness to expose their children to danger suggests some issues here.
