Translation Help: Greek To English

Sun Nov 15, 2009 1:36 am

If anyone could please help me translate this I'd be very thankful! I have this old photo and there's a sticker on the back of it in Greek and I can't read it. A translation into English would be most helpful!

I can't myself, but I sent it to my wife's cousin in Greece. If someone doesn't translate it before him on here, maybe the cousin can.

If you can drag OA out of the George or the "Would you hit it (pink)" thread I'm sure he'll only be too happy to oblige . . .

Okay.....here's the translation I got back:

"Today Olympiakos F.C left for Lyon but finally they didn't allowed to the 3 releasing players of Olympiakos (Sideris, Stefanakos and Loukanides) to leave with the rest of the team for the Wednesday match with Olympique Lyonnais for the European Champions League competition."

Beaten me to it . The above translation is exactly what it is but the form of Greek (Καθαρεύουσα) used is very old and not used anymore. . Is that from the 70's ? From the Military dictatorship maybe?

The guy that translated it for me said it was about 40 years old.

Thanks for the translation... I thought it would help me better understand the picture, but it hasn't done too much to help. There's a copyright of 1963 on the back so it's about 46 years old.

In 1963 Olympiakos had a major row with the Greek Football Association, Olympiakos was not allowed to make use of the Karaiskaki stadium. As a result Olympiakos had no place to train or play.

Also in 1963 there were huge riots at matches and goal posts were burnt. So maybe some of the players were involved. Who knows , pure speculation.

As for the photo, very nice.

I can confirm a late 1963 date for the photo in conformity with the inscription.

Lyon played Olympiakos in the 1963/64 season of the UEFA Cup.

Seeing that I assumed for some reason that you were a regular, I could hardly deprive Dubin or a.net of it's most famous Greek gay man. Now that that's cleared-up, I'm hiring a bulldozer as we speak . . .

I'm way too modest to comment here.
