Wiping An IPod Clean?

Thu Nov 19, 2009 7:36 pm

Hello all,

Does anyone know how to clear an iPod of all music and videos, thus restoring it back to factory standard???
Any help is much appreciated.

Regards

This is of course correct for a non-Touch iPod, but when you restore a "regular" iPod as described in that article, the data that had been stored on it can still be recovered with forensic tools since the data partition is only reset but not actually erased as far as I know.

You can sync your personal address book to the iPod as well, so it's not just media files but also your address book that may be at stake there.

So if you want to scrub a regular iPod completely clean, you might want to mount it as an external USB drive and apply a regular drive-erasure function (on a Mac: Disk Utility -> select iPod -> select "Erase" tab; The security option "Zero out data" should be sufficient, then click "Erase....").

(An iPod Touch or an iPhone can be erased completely with a built-in menu function, even remotely if you should have lost it; It will actually scrub your data from memory.)
