The Cookies Thread. Seriously.

Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:58 pm

On an thread posted by Scallar, Maverick623 made proper mention of touching a cookie jar. Except all the subsequent posts somehow meandered away from cookies and, inexplicably, onto the topic of the space program and the tech innovations it spurred, and whether we've adequately explored the Moon or not, and other such irrelevant, non-cookieous mush.

So let's not have that happen again. In this thread, when we mention cookies, we will STAY ON THE TOPIC of cookies.

The Holidays are coming, which means additional cookies!!

So, in the secular cookie department, we have the ould favorites like Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin, Cimmanom Sugar, and Macaroons (I actually can't have macaroons, even though I enjoy them, because for some reason the coconut upsets my tummy :-/ ). Also within the past two years or so I discovered that those sugar cookies with the little dab of chocolate frosting in the center are called "Chocolate Susan" cookies (or so the label in the Safeway bakery department said). But these particular Safeway cookies had just the one dab; and the surface of the cookie was even; had a constant grade. I think what the Safeway people may have been going for is that superior cookie wherein the top surface has a concentric, circular indentation, which is then filled yes FILLED, not dabbed, with the chocolate frosting.

And when it comes to non-secular (i.e., Holiday) cookies, the goyim do a rather nice
"chocolate crinkle" (I think that's what those are called, with the powdered sugar), and of course your workhorse sugar or butter cookies with the green and the red and the reindeer and all that lot.

When I was reeaallly little, we would make Hanukkah-type sugar cookies. Light blue plastic cookie cutters that would give dreydls, chanukiot, magein David...I think maybe even the letters of the dreydl (I mean there had to have been more than just those first three things I listed...) Oh, how I would love to have those light-blue plastic cookie cutters back in my life; not sure where they ended up. They are the cynosure, yes CYNOSURE, of some unusually fond memories of being a fambly.

*remembers self; sits up straight*
Also they were part of cookie-making. Ahem.

Lighten up while you still can, don't even try to understand, just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Now, back to the cookies......my mom, bless her dear departed soul, used to make some of the best chocolate chip, sugar and ice box cookies for Christmas.

My grandmother used to make cookies all year around. She would make mollasses cookies and sugar cookies and I used to take the short walk to her house and eat the scraps of cookie dough.............yum. None of her daughters have been able to duplicate her mollasses cookies. They always stayed soft and chewy, never got hard at all.
