Spurs Blast 9 Past Wigan In Premier League

Sun Nov 22, 2009 5:04 pm

Well I doubt there'll be a repeat of a 9-1 scoreline this season in the Premier League. Amazingly, the score was only 1-1 at half time but then Jermaine Defoe starting scoring for fun...he grabbed a hat-trick in 7 minutes and scored 5 overall.

This is Spurs 2nd best win, and Defoe has joined Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer as a scorer of 5 goals in a Premier League game.

Of course, I've got a couple of Wigan defenders in my fantasy sides on other sites...my only solace is the whilst Scharner is listed as defender so heaps of minus points for him, he did score the Wigan goal a la Henry.

The only other occasion I recollect 9 scored by one side is the one with Andrew Cole when Man Utd beat Ipswich 9-0 in 1995. Alan Shearer's 5 came in a 8-0 win for Newastle against Sheffield Wednesday.

Let's get it right: 1-0 at half time, then it went to 3-0, 3-1 and then the rest of Spurs goals came.

Not a good day to be Kirkland...

Also not a good day to be NWAESC when it dawned on me that I'd traded Defoe away a couple of weeks ago in my fantasy league...  Sad

There's a word for that in German. It's called "Schützenfest", which literally translates to "Marksman's Party". There's no real translation that sounds halfway decent, but suffice to say, a Schützenfest like that is most rare.

Games like that come once in a blue moon and its even more rare & amazing that 8 of the Spurs goals (9 of the game's goals) all came in the 2nd half.
I think if anything it means that Capello has to take Defoe & Lennon to next years world cup for sure as they've both been on fire this season and we aren't even at the Christmas period yet. Crouch has also shown how useful he can be so it has to be those 3 Spurs players going to South Africa surely...?

Redknapp has told Defoe that he has to get at least 20 goals this season and if he carries that form till the end of the season I reckon he'll easily get the European Golden Boot let alone the EPL top scorer trophy.

Not only were there 9 goals by spurs, but some of the goals were incredibly beautiful.

IIRC, this is the second highest scoring game in premier league history, only after that thrilling Portsmouth 7-4 Reading game in the 2007-08 season.

However, it is not the largest win, the largest win was by Manchester United against Ipswich in 1995, that ended 9-0. However, it is equal second with the Newcastle 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.

Also, had Defoe managed to score one more goal, he would have been the first premier league player ever to have scored a double hat-trick. There have been a couple players before him that have scored five goals in one game, including Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

However, my favourite scoring performance I have seen was Nottingham Forrest 1 - 9 Manchester United, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came in as a sub and scored 4 goals in less than 10 minutes. Big grin
