Thread 666 - The Airliners.net Metalhead Thread!

Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:53 am

Welcome fellow metal lovers. Following the successful thread that was Your Favorite Band. (by 76794p Nov 15 2009 in Non Aviation) , I bring you this thread, specifically dedicated to those who love all things double-bassy, de-tuned, heavy, technical, and vocal!

There seems to be plenty of you out there, so discuss!

Black metal, Death metal, Thrash metal, Power metal, Progressive metal, Folk metal, Viking metal, Grindcore, Nu-Metal, Pirate metal, Metalcore, you name it, we'll talk about it.

To begin, what was the last live show you went to, and what's your next?

My last was Progressive Nation featuring Bigelf, Unexpect, Opeth and Dream Theater in Wembley Arena. My next is In Flames and Killswitch Engage at the Hammersmith Apollo, where I attended my first ever live show back in 2005!

My last was almost a year ago in Birmingham where I saw Slipknot at the NIA - epic. Big grin Next - none planned, it rather sucks living in a corner of the country which people forget about  grumpy

We've needed a thread like this for ages - nice one Tom  bigthumbsup

My last show was ACDC.

My last metal show was probably the Progressive Nation tour (I think...), with Dream Theater headlining (also saw Dweezil Zappa at that show - his band is incredible).

Next would be Metallica for the 2nd year in a row, a couple weeks from now.

Nice thread.  bigthumbsup

My last concert was on November 22, I went to see Marduk. Finally after trying for a decade to get into Canada they finally do and I didn't want to miss it. They were supposed to tour with Mayhem earlier in the year but Mortuus couldn't get his visa.

My next show will be on December 1st. I'm seeing Ensiferum for my second time. I last saw them in July when they toured with Necrophagest on the Summer Slaughter tour. Support will be Ex Deo, Blackguard, and Swashbuckle. Hypocrisy was supposed to be main support but they dropped off the bill. I'm pissed because Alexi Laiho was subbing in as a second guitarist for them. And I figured this was one of the only chances I'd ever get to meet him. But alas, I will not...

I already have 6 more concerts planned out for next year and I'm waiting for the dates for Paganfest 2010. Yay Finntroll...I need to see them again.

What's everyone's favourite sub-genre? Mine is folk metal for sure, I just can't get enough of it.  Smile

Last show attended was The Cult at the State Theater (refuse to call it The Fillmore) in Detroit two weeks ago. Just picked up tickets to see Slayer, Megadeth and Testament at Cobo Hall in Detroit on 02-06-10 and Shinedown on 02-05-10 In Detroit. The ears will be bleeding that weekend. Had to pickup tickets to see U2 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing for the wife. Just trying to figure out how to tell the wife I have training in DTW that weekend...

Well, hello, thread!

Great idea...

Anyway, last show was Opeth in Sibiu, Romania. Next planned is Slayer in Chicago, still not sure I'll go, but I won't let it slip by if I can do something about it.

Favorite sub-genre is probably melodic black (or is that a sub-sub-genre? :P). But I like any metal with decent lyrics as judged by me. That is, not about women, love and beer, basically. That's too tacky and too mainstream. History, philosophy, nature, cosmos, literature, war, life, death, darkness, etc, all work. And, generally, the faster, the better.

Also, nu-metal and such genres doesn't really count at all; alternative metal may count.

So... yeah. m/

At a Christmas party last night, I played this record.
No Presents For Christmas - King Diamond.  Cool

Although I am not a metalhead anymore, I still like prog-metal bands such as Rush, Iron Maiden, Zebra, U.K and Dream Theater. I also like King Diamond but I am not sure where they'd be categorized.

I've seen Rush a million times since 1988, saw Iron Maiden twice at Long Beach Arena on the No Prayer For The Dying tour in 1990.
I was at Monsters Of Rock at Los Angeles Colosseum.
The bands were Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions and Van Halen.
Almost caught Dream Theater in Bangkok, Thailand last year but my flight got in the night of the concert.

You forgot to add glam-rock / hair metal.
I was living in Los Angeles when that was popular. That was a really fun time and the glam rockers knew how to rock hard, party and always had the hottest chicks!  yes
Till this day, I HATE grunge / alternative, college radio crap, and emo because it replaced glam which I consider far more superior.
The hair metal bands I like;

KISS
Whitesnake
Ratt
Motley Crue
Y&T
Heart (1980s was their hair metal era, yet I still love their 1970s stuff)
Vinnie Vincent Invasion
Night Ranger
Damn Yankees

Last concert I went, was the Iron Maiden one. Next one is going to be Metallica, but mostly so I can tell my grandchildren I went to one of their concerts since the music hasn't been that great lately.

I just hope they play some classics

Metallica has been playing TONS of classics on this tour, plus quite a few songs that they haven't played live either ever, or in years.

Some noteworthy songs they've played on this tour:

Dyers Eve
Blackened
Shortest Straw
Disposable Heroes
Fight Fire with Fire
Ride the Lightning
Hit the Lights
Trapped under Ice

Check out the tracklistings for their forthcoming Mexico City DVD:

I'm a huge Viking/Folk fan. Every other type of metal is a tad boring to me, to be honest. I'll tolerate black, though.

An a.net concert meet was suggested in the favourite band thread.
Would anyone be interested in having a Wacken Open Air meet some time in the next few years? We just have to pick the year. I HOPE that would give everyone enough time to get the money and enough notice.  Silly

Hardest darkest evil black metal album of all time... IMO

" At war with Satan" - Venom
" Black-Metal"-Venom
" Bonded by Blood" - Exodus
" Reign in Blood"- Slayer
" Master of Reality- The one and only ... Black Sabbath.

My vote Metal Punk or whatever

" Kill em All" - Metallica
"Dealing with it" - DRI
"Lights Action Revolution" Suicidal Tendencies
" RIP" Megadeath
"Screaming for Vengeance " JP

I seen Rush about two years ago, and Metallica in 2004. Still waiting to see Iron Maiden and Rammstien live, though.

Sadly Pittsburgh, Pa is a poor stop for tours due to the aging Mellon Arena, but that will change soon, hopefully.

Viking metal = Tyr, Amon Amarth
Folk Metal = Eluveitie, Korpiklaani
Pirate metal = Alestorm, Swashbuckle

Try those out, you'll see they all have very different sounds.

I admit, I too lolled when I found out there was a subgenre called pirate metal. Hilarious.

But viking and folk are good, especially folk... I guess some people don't care about vikings, so it might be regarded as less interesting overall.

Gonna listen to some Tyr now. Interesting sound, they have.

How does everyone feel about mixed sub-genres?

For example, Borknagar (while considering themselves just metal) can be classified as black, folk and progressive at the same time.

Pirate metal needs to be taken as the joke it is. Not even the bands take it seriously.

Amon Amarth don't do Viking metal. They play death metal. Ask Johan if they play viking metal, and he'd laugh at you and say "vikings didn't listen to metal".

Maybe even their webmaster is wrong! Big grin
I'm not pretending if they do Viking Metal or not as I've not listened to them but I was a little curious to explore more about them.

Musically there is a genre of "Viking metal", which is an extension of folk. It has to do with the way the music is written.

Tyr, is a great example of "viking metal":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTJi5ImbB7g

Compare that to Amon Amarth:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eABVwEgzIss

Musically, Amon Amarth is much closer to average Death Metal bands then Viking, excluding lyrically content, and that is the point they try to make. Lyrically, they write some of the best viking themed lyrics, but musically they are no where near.

Then a band like Ensiferum kind of falls right in the middle. Not as hard hitting as Amon Amarth, and a bit slower in pace.

Last concert was Dark Tranquillity, a small intimate gig in Barfly with only 100 in the audience... I was in the front row for the whole set and got half-pulled up on the small stage by Mikael Stanne m/

Next concert is Rammstein... very soon... can't wait!

My favorite album is the Blizzard of Ozz.

If I got stranded on an Island with only one groups music it would be Rush.

Permanent waves in a awesome record.

I Saw within the last 4 years: Rush, Porcupine tree, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Iron Maiden, Angra, Symphony X (twice) and attended 3 G3 concerts.

Its a shame the kind of music now in vogue, simply trash.

Even the worst metal record is miles better than whats on the radio today.

Rock on.

If anyone cares, saw Metallica last night at The Pond in Anaheim. Set list (not in order):

this was just your life
the end of the line
for whom the bell tolls
shortest straw
nothing else matters
battery
master of puppets
the day that never comes
judas kiss
cyanide
sad but true
broken beat and scarred
fade to black
one
enter sandman

encore:
too late, too late (motorhead cover)
trapped under ice
seek and destroy

I'll throw another bunch of genres into the mix here - those draped in the Gothic Big grin It's pretty hard to separate them out, as styles tend to vary slightly from album to album, but this is definitely the music I love the best. The overlap into Symphonic genres, female fronted or male results in some heavenly music. I'm just going to list those of my favorite groups which I can remember right now.

Gothic Metal:

Flowing Tears (I currently have For Tonight stuck in my head)
Asrai (Something I Said can get stuck in my head for days at a time)
Macbeth
Mortal Love
Tristania (God I hope they stay in this genre)
Silentium
Myridas (Some truly epic tracks)
The Gathering
Elis (RIP Sabine, never can be the same again  Sad )
After Forever (early releases)
Darkwell
Sunterra
Bella Morte
Satyrian
Poisonblack
Mandragora Scream
Lacuna Coil
Evanescence (who come and go with this genre, their older stuff is the best by far)

Gothic Doom Metal:

Tales of Dark (Of grandiose fevers and passion arcane is fantastic)
Sonata Nocturna
Octavia Sperati
Draconian
Theatre of Tragedy
Chalice (Australia's best offering so far)
The Sins of Thy Beloved
Elegion

Symphonic Gothic Rock/Metal:

Delain
Epica
Forever Slave
Sirenia
Within Temptation
Stream of Passion (Arjen Lucassen as a whole is talented)
Nightwish (Best assumption out of many genres, Power Metal too)
Angtoria
Krypteria (more power metal I suppose)
Leaves' Eyes (Liv Christine's voice is an aquired taste, and the poor girl looks like Schumacher in a wig)
Cinderella Effect (More electro-gothic, like Suicidal Romance or even Butengel)

Symphonic:

Midnattsol (Folk Symphonic)
Therion (only really became Gothic later, some excellent music)
Xandria (Not really Gothic, although who knows with the new singer)
Apocalyptica

Gothic Black Metal:

Cradle of Filth

Death Metal:

Eternal Tears of Sorrow (really belongs to many genres)

Black Metal:

Susperia
Trail of Tears (Manage to be symphonic too, Blood Red Trance is excellent)

Power Metal:

Sonata Arctica
Luca Turilli's Dreamquest

Emile Autumn - I've left this one on it's own because quite what you classify it as is a mystery to me. It's (she's) everything, and WHY didn't I go a few miles up the road to see her when she played Ilfracombe! *bangs head on wall repeatedly*

I've not touched too much on the bands which are not closely associated with the Gothic genres, as then the list would go on forever! Big grin I've been listening to these genres for a decade now, some good bands have sadly gone, but there is some great talent out there.
