Busy Day On The Mississippi River (pictures)

Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:05 pm

Last week I went for a ride on one of the free ferries from downtown New Orleans and I lucked out...quite a bit of river traffic including two cruise ships (one of which I've never seen before), several excursion vessels, and about a half dozen cargo ships. Good thing I brought my camera.

Cruise liner Deutschland. First time I've seen her.

The next one was just a tad bigger...Carnival Triumph.

The ferry boat I took a ride on at the Gretna landing upriver from the city. Skyline in the background. It's a free ride.

The ferry I took is the new route which started about a month ago. It's a 23 minute ride upriver to Gretna and it takes about 12 minutes for the trip back to Canal Street. Right now it's carrying people only but supposedly one of the car carriers is being worked on and will be put into use on that run at some point.

Looks familiar. Anyone know if that's a former Carnival ship?

Regarding the Deutschland...

Looks like it must have completed a 15 day cruise from Jamaica?

I'm betting that once they get cars on, they will charge the customary dollar for inbound trips for people with cars.

My favorite ferry is the Canal-Algiers ferry.

I actually "miss" visiting Louisiana - lol...having cycled through Louisiana for most of last winter and into the summer, I was ready to just stay in one place for awhile...though in the future any trip would be vacation vs. work related, so that would make it more palatable

Edit: I realized the above at looking at those pictures  Smile When working out of Shell Beach (St Bernard Parish/Lake Borgne) It was amazin to see the massive ships that could fit through the MRGO...I am definitely happy that that channel has been/is being closed permanently though!

Nope, the Deutschland was built many years ago specially for a german shipping line Peter Deilmann as a 5star+ cruise ship. It also plays hosts to a famous TV series in german TV called Traumschiff, but only 2 90-minute sequels are produced each year, usually in remote locations highlighting to touristic attractions in that area. This year's first sequel included a visit to Peru as well as Miami (but no passage of the Panama Canal was included ...).
