I love the graphic - that's cool! Big grin

I'll do my best to make this one, I'm open to suggestions for dates, but it will have to fit in around my University work. Maybe avoid the high summer as flights get a bit expensive with all the tourists heading to the beaches.

It's about time there was a meet in this region  thumbsup

Hi Fatmir,

excellent idea. As a Balkan a.nutter however, I have to say that I am not in the Balkans and won´t be there anytime soon...Anyway, I hope that your idea works!

That's for sure. The meeting maybe will be held during the winter (in the beginning months of 2010, end of January, February or March sounds great  Smile) or in the spring. This is only my personal opinion.
In the summertime we have 'Football Party' Big grin

Would be nice to do a meet here (looking for something to replace the Ukraine), but my schedule for 2010 is one big blank with several options, so I can't help out in suggesting dates etc.

Dammm Fatmir you should start doing designs for big companies, BTW back to the topic
Well this i a great idea i think but first we have to set up a location and the date so can we make a kind of voting here if possible, any one can propose 3 cites the one that gets most votes will be the meeting place?

PRN
TIA
BEG

and the date should be around February
we will need visa to enter countries in EU so it might be problem for us.

Not knowing much about the Balkan (I know, a good time to change that  Wink) how are these cities connected airline-wise and how interesting are they? Especially a city with low-cost service might have an advantage as it is easier to attract more people.

I think for most people this kind of timeline will be too soon - it's only a couple of months away. Those travelling non-rev will have no problem though.

Balkans Meet 10/10/10

Tue Dec 08, 2009 8:42 am

Due to the persistent work of some members of the Croatian aviation community, we're well on the way of opening up at least some major airports in Croatia to spotters - meaning we wouldn't be chased away from the fence by the police . ZAG is first on the list, while it may also spread to SPU and DBV (the question is when), so if it all works we can combine pleasure with pleasure here in Cro  .

So, for my 3 cities I'd say:

ZAG
SPU (a spotter-friendly airport, wow)
BEG

in no particular order  .

how are these cities connected airline-wise

The list of airlines which operates at PRN (alphabetical order)
Adria Airways
Air Berlin
Austrian Airlines
Belle Air
British Airways
Croatia Airlines
Edelweiss Air
Germania
Germanwings
Hamburg International
Malév Hungarian Airlines
Meridiana
Montenegro Airlines
Scandinavian Airlines System
Swiss International Air Lines
Tafa Air
Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines Cargo

Quoting JRadier (Reply 7):
how interesting are they?

Take a look at this video that I've made in 2008.

Actually there are operating two low cost airlines, if we may consider Air Berlin as a LCC!
Air Berlin
Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hanover, Munich, Zürich

Belle Air
Liège, Rome-Fiumicino, Stuttgart, Tirana

and Tafa Air, which I don't if they've started or not!
Dortmund, Friedrichshafen

In June, U2 possibly it's going to operate GVA - PRN route.

Well, concerning the date I'm with Dan, as the balkans are not particulary known for overly strong LCC presence or cheap fares in general, and springtime is already pretty packed (KEF, PRG meets).
I'd suggest late september to mid-october or something like that.

Then, next question: What do we want to do? Is this supposed to be a beer or an aviation meet? If we are going to do an aviation meet we shall ensure that the cities airport 's got at least some traffic! If we're going to do a beer meet, well, the "infrastructure" 's got to be given as well. As I think it'll be a bit of both (like ukraine) we should take care of that.

TGD: Nice landscape around, but... i think that neither the airport nor the city itself can offer what we are searching for. It was the only city where after a single hour of sightseeing I sat down in a bar and had the feeling that I've seen it all.

SJJ: Well, I kinda fell in love with that place, so I might be a bit biased  Wink The city is a beauty, the surroundings breathtaking and there's quiet a bit to explore for the beerboys as well. However, looking at the airports shedule reveals little of mor interest then what can be found at TGD, just that "Montenegro Airlines" has been replaced by "BH Air"...

BEG: Propably spotting wise the best bet (together with ZAG), the city itself is big enough to find a way to spend the evenings (enjoying the sunset from Kalemegdan, then into town, beer)... Ah, and they got an aviation museum, which is in quiet a sorry state, but if you've got to spend an hour or two in between flights...

I can't say anything about the other cities, as I've never been there.
No vote from my side yet, show me what your cities got on offer first :P

I would love to go visit TIA, although the flights between BEG and TIA are expensive, and there wont be direct flights in winter...

This is what I was thinking too. Regarding airlines I'm not too bothered about direct flights - so long as I can get to within a couple of hundred miles of where we're meeting I'm sure I can get a bus/train or something to the destination. I will probably take the opportunity to visit Bulgaria at the same time, as I've wanted to for a while now, and I may just end up in Greece, Turkey or god knows where!

If PRN comes in to count i can make possible to have a spotting position inside the airport and i mean with this from this position here

usually Saturdays are quite busy with up to 40 flight a day and 4-6 military a a day.

and if there are beer people around than there are a lot of bars in Prishtina town.

Well to include Bosnians and Croatians it had to be written that way. Don't take any offense. (plus majority of people here wouldn't be able to read it)

The poster appears to be ripped off (or it's just me)! Surprisingly, there is not edit button in my post! It's weird but I'm to sort this out as soon as possible.

Let's get back to the topic.
After there are too many thoughts about location of the meeting, I'd suggest first to determine the date. What are your preferences?

- Mid of February
- March
- September

Express your thoughts about these three dates. What are the (dis)advantages?

February - Low traffic, Cold weather, Cheap tickets
March - Optimum traffic, Optimum weather, Optimum tickets
September - High Traffic, Hot weather, Expensive tickets

That's is just my point of view in this short brief.

P.S. Btw, why I could edit this?! Is there any deadline when you can edit your own post?!

Fatmir

Recently extended to 60 minutes, IIRC.

February 2010 might be a bit too tight fro planning, as expressed by others earlier. Also the weather could be negative.

Personally I'd perfer September or even October.

Location-wise I am not too picky as long as I fly there within one day w/o having to fly out before 0800h.
Might even consider to combine the location with a trip to one (or more) of the Greek islands.

DBV has a very nice city to visit, but also attracts quite a number of tourists in high season. But in off-season, hotel rates should be okay.

Fatmir do not worry about that part, if Croatia comes to consideration than we can have the visa, we can apply for visa as TV crew, and if it comes to go to Belgrade there is not a big problem about that i go often to Serbia in my family that lives in Presheva so there are no barriers for this places.

Guy's should we focus more on this I mean can we all contribute more and decide about the place were the meeting should be held and can we continue with the voting in order to get as much votes and options as possible. BTW all others that want to attend the Balkan Meeting can give their 3 city voting in order to have the best choice.

ZAG 10/10/10 is sounding tempting! It's a place on my "to do" list in the next 12-24 months,as is Belgrade & what looks like an amazing museum there! We could combine both? IIRC a few LCC's(I remember FlyNikki being mentioned) are going to be starting flight's to Belgrade which should mean reasonable prices, that just leaves Belgrade to Zagreb! Are there any flight's connecting them?

Date is suiting me just fine, and with ZAG beeing a place I've never been before... I'm game.
What's nice about ZAG is that Croatia Airlines is offering dirt cheap domestic flights starting at 50EUR roundtrip in Eco and 150EUR roundtrip in Biz (Or 100EUR Y out-, C inbound or vv.) So if some of you will be in need for some additional *A miles...

Flying within the balkan countries tends to be rather expensive (well, actually not, but as there are rarely any special offers... Just don't expect Ryanairesque fares) Anyway, buses are cheap and the landscape is often just way to beautiful to just jet over it in a metal tube. Did Sarajevo to Podgorica in 2008, what an amazing ride! IIRC the ticket was 10 EUR (Or was is 10 KM?)

What do you think if meetings could be held on three different locations (due to not too long distances and very cheap bus tickets). Let's do a triangle meeting!

Quoting SAAB900 (Reply 34):
TripleDelta have you got anymore info on this?

It's looking very, very good so far. Our Croatian Aviation Forum organization - pretty much the first time spotters and fans of aviation have gathered into an organized group here - has made a deal with the ZAG airport authorities (and particularly the airport's CEO) about allowing members hassle-free spotting from anywhere around the airport fence (a further goal is to set up occasional apron visits). Each of us members can bring someone, just as long as we let the airport police know we're coming, so it should not be a problem for the meet. Indeed, if it all works well - and the whole system has almost a year to prove itself - we could even inform the ZAG authorities that it's a full-blown meet and not just a spotting session; given that it's excellent PR, ZAG would probably go out of their way to make us comfortable.

Quoting Kiqaboy (Reply 37):
Croatian A.net guy's/ladies Smile what do you think over there are there any chances to prepare something from your side for the 10 10 10 meeting.

If ZAG is selected as the venue, you can be sure something will be set up  Smile. Given that ZAG is a bit further from the city itself - and the OU shuttle is the only realistic way to get there - depending on the number of attendees, we could organize vans to pick everybody up, go to town, look around... and given the wx in October is usually beautiful, we could organize some panoramic flights above town as well  Smile.
No plane, no gain.

That's amazing.

If ZAG has been selected for Triple Ten Meeting, let me know to change this topic subject and to announce it officially.

We're not going to combine locations as I proposed before just because I'm planning to give 2-3 days for ZAG!

Now it's all up to the Croatian guys but whatever need you want for different cases let me inform. I'll be glad to help you as much as I can.

P.S. Forgot to add
Do you all agree for ZAG?
Me: YEY  checkmark

Fatmir

What was your original plan/idea for the event?  Smile (just to have a clear idea) Given the time frame, we have a lot of time to set everything up to the liking of all participants - so on our end I (so far) am open to everybody's suggestions and requests!

Nothing 'spectacular' if I may call on this way.
During this event I must pay attention to Zagreb city itself. I thought to spend two or three days in Zagreb as I always wanted to visit it. Maybe I will be there during 8th and 9th October and finally taking part on the event but still haven't decided for a finally plan!
Having a stroll in Zagreb, it's all I want, besides the event.  Smile

I want to visit Pula, where my dad went to army in the 70s. lol

I'll definitely plan to attend the ZAG meeting, hopefully I can stay for two days.

OK this sounds perfect for me. It's far enough in advance that I can get cheap flights, and it's an interesting region which I've wanted to see for a while. I'll have finished University by then so I'm not limited time wise, so if I can I'll make a longer trip of it and travel overland around the entire region - subject to me having enough money. I'd especially like to visit Kosovo, and Sarajavo - are these destinations safe, and is there any specific order in which I should visit, i.e so one country doesn't look at a passport stamp from another and start making things difficult?

Looking forwards to this one, I'm going to keep it free  yes

I do not know about Bosnia, as never been there but Kosovo is more than safe.
It is true that people are still afraid to visit this region! They have heard terrific news what happened here in 1999. Things have changed and anyone who will visit, will change his point of view. That's for sure!  Smile

Dan, if you want you can come back in PRN with our group, to enjoy the city. You don't need anything in particular to visit, stamps, visas or whatever.  Smile

I just realized that I'd be able to hop on the Germanwings nonstop for 40EUR return from SXF.
However, that's just about as boring as it can get.
Thinking about flying BH Airlines from FRA via Tuzla to Sarajevo, then catch a bus to Dubrovnik and fly up on Croatian Airlines.

I can't even afford *thinking* about buying tickets at the moment though, so I have plenty of time to get things sorted...

Ah, and did I mention that I'm supporting the ZAG proposal? ;D

Well, don't know if this is still the case, but I'd be highly surprised if this changed:
When visiting Serbia *and* Kosovo make sure that you enter and leave Kosovo either to and from Serbia or to and from any other country.
When entering let's say from ZAG by plane you get a koso...varean(?) immigration stamp. When passing the border to Serbia however the Serbs won't stamp your passport (don't know if Kosovo is giving out an emigration stamp, but think so) so you get *no* serbian immigration stamp! Then try to leave the country... You can offcourse go back via Kosovo, but thats really your only choice. When entering Serbia first you get you stamp upon arrival and the lacking serbian control on the to and from kosovo doesn't matter as you've officially not left Serbia

Well, ZAG was as a proposal from myself and it seems "all" of participants have agreed!  Smile
Actually, it was the best choice among the others.

Why have you put the asterisks?  Yeah sure

Kosovar. Big grin

David, that is not a big deal anymore! Why?

If we suppose, someone flies to Kosovo and exits by plane, he/she will not have a single problem!

If someone, enters in Kosovo by car/bus, let's say from Montenegro and get that immigration stamp (which I do not know if are given anymore; this last summer they did), according to Serbian authorities you won't be able to enter in Serbia!
What did most of emigrants (incl. some of my relatives) who entered in Kosovo, through Montenegro or Albania?! Here is a practical solution.
First they moved to FYR of Macedonia (extra 30 - 40 km, which ain't too much) and then entered into Serbia without any problem!  Wink

Until 10/10/10 I really do believe these administrative cases (from Serbians side) will be solved.

-----
David, have you ever visited Kosovo? You are very informed about these procedures. Big grin
