Wild Light Phenomenon Over Norway

Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:35 am

Came across this on another board, don't know if it's been posted but it looks terrifying. Meteorologists say it's not the northern lights and it came from the east. Any thoughts?

It's beautiful. Looks like something eaither glancing off the atmosphere or dissipating in its upper reaches. Would be great to know what created that wild blue pigment though!

Cheers,

To me the orgins of the light appear to be on the backside of the mountain ridge. A spotlight or something.

Saw the pics on Spaceweather.com and the links to local media had some amazing shots as well. Definitely looks like a rocket launch and possible malfunction causing a pinwheel effect. Truly surreal looking.

I don't think we have the technology to send light in a spiral.

Electrons travelling perpendicular to a magnetic field would have that sort of motion, I believe. Or anything with some sort of electrical charge for that matter. But photons are neutral, aren't they..?

But hell, that's the coolest thing I've seen.

....or maybe the LHC created a rift between space/time continuum  Wow!

Seriously though...it was apparently a rocket launch gone bad:

What a bunch of rubbish. Clearly, Cousin Eddie's shitter was full, and he emptied it into the storm drain earlier this morning.

It's only Rudolf & Co out for a test-spin of their new SCAS (Spectacular Collision Avoidance System)

This is from a very reliable source  santahat  (-which will confiscate all my Christmas gifts if I identfy it), that all this newfangled electronic TCAS stuff is not even good enough for the birds.

I dunno... we have the technology to stop light dead in it's tracks.

Quoting Dc9northwest (Reply 8):

Yes they are. Well, in the classical sense....

Quoting Dc9northwest (Reply 8):
Electrons travelling perpendicular to a magnetic field would have that sort of motion, I believe.

They would cause more of an Archimeden (sp?) spiral I would think. These are almost concentric rings.

Apparently the Russians today admit it was a missile from a submarine called «Dmitry Donskoi».
