Why Do Used IPhones Sell For $400-600 On Ebay?

Wed Dec 09, 2009 9:58 pm

I don't understand it. Used AT&T-specific iPhones regularly sell for between $400 and $600 (and as much as $1000) on eBay.

Why do people spend this much for used iPhones? Why don't they just pay $200 for a new phone and plan and another $175 for the early termination fee to get a brand-new phone?

Seems like you answered your question. That $375, plus the cost of the actual phone bill for the first month, is just about what you would expect to pay on Ebay, plus labor and shipping.

There is constant demand for unlocked iPhones.

Sure, that makes sense, but it doesn't explain why people would pay up to $1000 for the device, which I've seen.

Another question - I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell my 3GS so I can switch to a usable network. How concerned should I be about the buyer being able to restore my personal data? Is it as easy as restoring "deleted" photos on SD cards?

If you use the onboard erase function the data should be deleted permanently. It takes several hours but that is because the phone actually overwrites the data.

I haven't used that function on the 3GS yet, however. In principle it should be sufficient to just throw away the encryption key to render your data unrecoverable. I'm not entirely certain that the 3GS will still bother to overwrite the data.
