Happy Hanukkah--And My Tribute To America

Sat Dec 12, 2009 5:49 pm

Happy Hanukkah to those celebrating it around the world!

I wanted to share this story because it made me so proud to be an American:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/us/politics/09hanukkah.html

This kind of story is only possible in the United States. It makes me so proud that we have such a diverse country where a Mormon Republican Senator whose political views are contrary to the majority of American Jews can write a Hanukkah song that is performed by a Syrian-American.

The United States truly is a unique and special country. In the scheme of Jewish history (thousands of years), there has only been one country in human history where a story like the above would be possible. That really is something!

This blog's commentary summed it up well:

Why? I don't see anything in there that wouldn't be possible in, say, Western Europe. OK, we don't get too many Mormons here, but I don't think that's the issue.

I love this holiday, went over to a good friend of mine's home to see her menorah all lit up. Though in theory, this thing with the song could happen any where, things like this seem to end up in America more often than not. I mean America has a president of color. How many politicians in Europe are like that have very meaningful roles in government?

Happy Hanukkah!

Well, we've got a woman as head of government who had grown up under the former communist regime in eastern Germany, a wheelchair-bound finance minister, an openly gay foreign minister, a Thailand-born health minister and a second-generation turkish immigrant as a head of one of the opposition parties, for a start. And the best thing is that none of this is a major topic of public interest.

But it's just always nice when people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances come together, especially when they overcome inherited conflicts.

It's just not only happening in America. Some people should really get out some more...

My sentiments exactly. The US of A is the best home our people have ever and will ever have.

Bundesrätin Dreyfuss, a Jew who also for a year was Federal President. The Brits have a Scot as Prime Minister, and with James Callaghan had a Wales-man as Prime Minister. The French have a "Secondo" of Hungarian origin and related to the Habsburg as President.

Is it really happening in Western Europe? Perhaps it is possible, but I still think the United States is special in this regard. No other country in history has treated its Jewish minority population as well as the United States. None are even close!

We would probably agree regarding the general history of jews in different countries, but the peaceful coming-together of diverse individual people happens all over the world.

you need to get out more...plenty of Jews down here in Australia, and they're treated just as well as those in the USA.

Well........

http://jta.org/news/article/2009/11/...ents-in-australia-hit-record-high1

"SYDNEY, Australia (JTA) -- Anti-Semitic incidents in Australia have reached record levels, according to an annual report.

Australian Jewish organizations have received 962 reports of anti-Jewish violence, vandalism, harassment and intimidation between Oct. 1, 2008 and Sept. 30, 2009, according to Jeremy Jones, the international and community affairs director for the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council."

But yes, for the most part they were very nice to us down there.

I am not saying America is anti semitism free....The poster just happened to mention about Australia and I wanted to point out a recent article.

Irrelevant as the total number of reported incidents in the US for a given year is far lower per person than in Australia, if any comparable data is reasonably extrapolated.

For 2008, 962 reports for Australia's approximately 120,000 Jews comes to one incident per 124 people. For the same year in the US, the ADL reported 1,352 incidents - and for the 5.5 million Jews in the US (a rough average of several reported population figures) that comes to an incident for every 406 people.
